View Full Version : Which Oil and Why?

I've looked over the previous threads on oil...but they are pretty specific...
like adding oil coolers or stored all winter or modified engines...etc....
OK HERE'S EVERY ONES CHANCE TO CHIME IN...:D
Let's keep it simple...1.What oil do you use? 2. Why do you use it? 3. How often do you change it?
That's pretty simple...but I bet it's going to be very informative...
At this time I 1. am using what-ever the dealer is installing :( 2. I'm using it because that's what they are putting in... :( 3. I'm going to start changing it myself at every 3,000 miles with whatever we learn on this thread...:D
Thanks, Walt.

1) Whatever comes out of my Ford dealership's tap (probably 5/20 synthetic blend).
2) I get a nice discount and use of a lift to do it myself.
3) Every 2500-3000 miles. (However, I will change the oil in my MM after 1200 miles due to the color of the oil from the last change).
Just my .02 and then some.

Walt in case you don't understand some of the off beat comments, it may be good to do an oil search.
This topic has stirred up some "issues" in the past.
Don't ask me why.......
PS: Your next question should be "What supercharger is the best?" :argue:

Actually, could we get some more forums or subforums added? Like Power-adder, drivetrain, suspension, interior/exterior/electric, maintenance, engine,
wheels & tires? Is there room with all the other forums we have?
I would be willing to donate some time for collating and moving stuff.
Hijack over.
I just got my MM so I am interested in the oil thing also. :)

Thanks, Walt.I have a 2004 Marauder (DTR). I use the factory (i.e., Motorcraft) 5W20, semi synthetic oil from my Lincoln-Mercury dealer. They've done very good work so far, and they charge the same rate as the Jiffy Lube or Mobil Oil change places near my house. Once my Marauder goes over 10K miles, I may then switch to a Mobil One synthetic oil instead. I also don't like the idea of the local high-school kid workers changing my oil on my MM. The MM has an incredible V8 engine, and I wanna baby mine as much as possible!
I also own a 1994 Ford Taurus SHO (dark green). I use Mobil One synthetic 5W30 on that car. I think synthetic oil is better for high-reving, multi-valve, high-performance engines. It runs cooler, doesn't build up sludge, and has better lubricity than conventional oils. I change my oil every 3 months, regardless of the mileage or the use of synthetic oil. My SHO is 11-1/2 years old and still running and looking just fine. I do the transmission and the radiator every two years. I will probably drain and refill the rear differential on the MM every two years too!

Mobil One 0-20, I like it, every 5 k. If ever there is an oil related problem
and with documented proof mobil one says they will fix it.

I have No Brand Loyalty when it comes to engine oil. That being said, I knowingly only use Group IV (PAO) or Group V (Ester) Synthetics. I buy my own oil and I take it to my dealer and tell him to use my oil, but his Motorcraft filter and labor. Normally costs me between $12.00 and $16.00 for them to do this.
I tend to buy my oil when it is on sale, or close-out. At the moment, my Marauder has Amsoil (Yellow Label) 10W-30 (Group IV) and my Continental has Mobil-1 10W-30 (Group IV) in them. Sitting in my shed, I have a few quarts of RedLine 10W-30 (Group V) and for next winter (cold here in Florida :D ) I have a line on some Castrol Syntec (Made in Germany) 0W-30 that is only sold in AutoZone. Not sure if the Syntec 0W-30 (Made in Germany) is a Group IV or Group V oil, but I know that it is not a Group III (Hydrocracked Dyno) oil like all the other Castrol Syntec weights that are made in the US (or Canada).
Almost forgot:
Continental (no longer in Warranty) gets it's oil changed anywhere between 7500 and 10000 miles.
Marauder (Certified used car with long extended warranty) gets it's oil changed at 5000 miles or less (only to make sure I never have warranty problems).

I have it changed every 3000 miles. I am fine with the dealer putting in what the book calls for.

From a post by Terry Dyson over on BITOG:
"The key for now that I wanted to get across to all here is that this PAO based oil uses PAO based esters that are not normally seen in the popular GRP4 PCMO's."
So it sounds like GC is a mix of Grp IV and V (would that make it a Grp 4½?)

Now, now folks....I didn't ask what was BEST...I just asked what DO YOU USE....
"Mobil One" seems to keep coming up....
and 423REED had some good thoughts....
Let's keep it clean or I'm going to ask something like... which is the BEST COLOR for a marauder????:flamer: :argue: :banned: :mad2:
Just kidding...
Walt. ...Black...:-)

Hey RF,
I was thinking the same thing. Group 4½. Of course, I could do the same thing by using 3 quarts of RedLine and 3 quarts of Mobil-1 (or AmsOil).

I ran Royal Purple 5w-20 for 2 changes, 10k miles. I then switched to Mobil 1 5w-30, its what is readily available. I will run that for 5k miles. I am going to try Amsoil 5w-20 for the winter. By the end of next winter I should have a gauge on what the engine performs best on. The Mobil 1 does make the engine run more smoothly. Maybe the 30 weight performs better in the heat. We are having a top 3 summer for heat here.

Mobil1 5W30 motor oil & K&N HP-2010 oil filter.
Change both every 5,000 miles at my dealership.

Motorcraft 5W-20, cause that what the book says.
At a dealership (Ford or Mercury) so I have an invoice with a Ford logo on it.
Every 5000ish miles, cause that what the book says.
I just rolled 98K (with many burnouts, drag races, etc.) and no oil related woes. More important, IMHO, do the tranny service about twice what the book says. I do about every 20K miles myself.

L-M dealer changes every 3K, (should be) the called for Motorcraft 5W20. My cost is $28 or $30. Since I drive short trips and live in a cool climate it is considered severe service and ALL would do well to read your owners manuals and realize exactly what severe service is! 5K miles is too far in most northern climates, especially with short trips.

My car has almost 2K miles, and I changed the oil and filter and put in Mobil 1 5W-30. The car sounds much better in startup mode now that it has full synthetic in it. It also appears to run better. Took it to the track with 100% stock car and ran twice w/ET's of 15.1 and 15.2 seconds. Believe that the complete stock time on this car is around 15.5-15.6 secs.. I believe that I have a good runner here. What do I need to do to get into the 14's? Pulley's? gears (4:10's?), superchargers 13's? Any help will be appreciated.

1) Mobil One 5-30
2) It's available here in gallon containers, makes it easy to do myself (I never let the 17 yr old on the J-Team do it, EGAD!). This is an expensive precision machine, and oil is its lifeblood.
3) Every 5K miles w/ filter ( roughly every 6 weeks)
That's my response.

I've been putting the recommended weight Royal Purple in every car I've owned for the last dozen years or so. I've had A/C problems and tranny problems, but never an engine problem. PS: my Corvette revs faster with RP than it ever did with Mobil 1. GM tells you to put Mobil 1 in the Corvette, but they lubricate everything in their factory with Royal Purple lubricants.

Motorcraft 5W20 every 3000 miles but I did use Mobil 1 5W30 once or twice.
Mac's oil as a coolant thread may convince me to go back and stay with the Mobil 1. We'll see when he reports his 5W30 conclusions.
Now......for a calmer topic. I am on the fence on supercharger brands and wondering which wax gives the best shine. :argue: :flamer: :banned:

Mobil1 5W30 fully sync motor oil and Mobil 1 Filter , every 3000 plus miles. Im thinking of trying Amsoil.
BTW-who makes a excellent oil relocation kit and I ask from those that has one mounted themselves and there experence with it..

Mobil1 5W30 and original Motorcraft filter gets changed every 3,000 miles at the dealership where the car was purchased. I provide the oil and filter and they charge $5 - can't beat that, and it's always a good idea to make nice with the service reps and techs ;)
BTW - since it's an oil thread, maybe I can throw this in... I was given 2 gallons of Mobil1 15W50 (http://www.mobil.com/Canada-English/Lubes/PDS/IOCAENPVLMOMobil_1_15W-50.asp). Any harm in using this stuff, since it was free?

For a different perspective on oil viscosity, see SergntMac's "oil as a coolant" thread...
