View Full Version : ...My new gauges!

well,.. I got tired of the white Autometer gauges. I've decided to go with the Autometer Cobalt Series. So far, I only have the oil pressure and voltmeter,.. and I finally got an A-piller dual pod.

These are full sweep electrical gauges, not cheap,.. but I think it's worth the cost. Voltmeter was $99.95 and the Oil pressure was $199.95  at Summit Racing.

I don't think I'm gonna put them in the original positions. Here's what I'm thinking:

Instead of trying to explain,.. I've made a crude drawing. :P

http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=74 42&stc=1

I want to get a dual dash pod like Big Joe P has, and put the oil pressure & voltmeter right in front of my face. Oil pressure is arguably the most important gauge, so I want it where I can easily see it, and I like to keep an eye on my voltmeter (especially since I installed the underdrive pullies)

I think this layout makes sense,.. well, it makes sense to me anyway. I'd like to hear some opinions on that.

Also,... I've never installed gauges before, I'm not much of an electrician, but I think I can manage. Any advice, tips, or tricks will be greatly appreciated! :bows:

Well?

Nice looking gauges! I like the black faces. On a related note, I saw TooManyFord's sweet AutoMeter Nexus gauges. Talk about sexy looking! Wow!

I've got an A-pillar two-gauge pod coming and I'm going to put AutoMeter ultra-light oil temp and trans temp up there. I'd like a/f ratio and fuel pressure but not sure where to mount them.

Way to go Tom, not bad for el pinche guero, they look real nice. I for one do not like the look of the a-pilar pod or the one on the dash, but hey that is just me, another el pinche guero.

Logan says. Dash pods are a last resort. You can fit 3 in your console cluster and 3 on the A pillar man, no need for the dash pod.

Try not to Ruin the Pillars with holes from the screws they give you. 3M double sided Adhesive Will work fine. Just be sure to rub the pillar with alcohol to get any impurities off so the tape will stick nicey nice. Also I ageree that the Dash Pod is a bit much. Unless you want your Dash to look like the cockpit of a 747.

hmm,.. yeah,.. ya might be right. I might be a bit much. I think I'll start by making the A-pillar into a triple pod. I can't add a third by removing the cig. lighter cause my GPS is plugged in there, and they don't make a kit to hardwire it.

Also,.. I think I'm gonna need a wiring diagram. I was looking at the directions that came with the gauges,... they aren't very descriptive. Granted,.. Like I said earlier,.. I'm not much of an electrician. How the hell am I supposed to tell the wires apart? I know, I know,... get the wiring diagram. :P

EDIT: after looking at the pics of Big Joe P's A-Pillar and dash pod again, I don't think it's too much.

Yes you can Cracka!!!

Get creative dammit!

What you do is you relocate the cigarette lighter from a FRONT facing cigarette lighter to a SIDE facing cigarette lighter, which is prettier anyway for your ghetto power adpater requirements.

Just create a hole on the passenger side of the console guage pod as far back as you realistically can, that'll leave enough room for the gauge to fit where the cigarette lighter WAS and enough room for a side mount cigarette lighter...

Yo yo yo...

I relocated my cig lighter/power outlet from the front of the pod to the passenger side of the gauge pod.
