Zack is right. We had this on another vehicle just 2 weeks ago. My wife described it to me as "...I think the transmission is downshifting". Being just our of warranty I surely didn't want a tranny issue.

When I test drove it, it was as Zack described. At about 45 it felt like I was lifting and reapplying gas even though my foot was steady. I could tell it wasn't the tranny.

EGR is emissions so it is warrantied much longer. Got mine fixed free.

I have the SCT file that has the TC stay unlocked until 50 MPH in 4th only...when it locks it bucks around like a spark miss but only at constant speed or slight acceleration?? If I accelerate enough but not unlock the TC it is perfectly smooth!!?? :)

It bucks around worse when the engine is cold and the TC is locked.....Sound like the EGR valve??

If the TC stays unlocked it is fine.....I just can't feel it!!

Ahem......Can you clean them or test them any way??

I disconnected the vacuum lines and nothing happened.....but I didn't drive it....affraid it would quit or screw up the computer!!

How bad does it have to get before the "Check Engine" light comes on?? I checked the DTC's with my SCT 9100 and NADA!!!

I don't think it kicks in at WOT. It shouldn't hurt anything, I used to disconnect mine at the track (Cobra, not MM, but same ol same for the most part).

On our 'other car' with the EGR problem, there was no check engine light.

If anyone is interested here is a good article on EGR diagnostics and operation!!!

My Vic does this as we speak. Particularly on the highway. Has done it for few years. Last fall had the EGR VALVE SWITCH replaced and the EGR TUBE replaced when the car started throwing codes. Fuel milage dropped off significantly.

All was well aside from MPG for 8 months and now she's throwing codes again....all EGR related and occationally running rough and stalling while cruising or at a stop light.

The EGR valve itself was never replace...just cleaned....

Back to square two...three...whatever....:cen sor:

With the TC locking at 50 MPH mine feels like the driveline "loading" and "unloading" by itself......sort of jerking every now and then!! :mad2:

With the "Stock" tume it is almost un-drivable as the TC locks in 2nd gear and it jerks like crazy!!

I have not seen a drop in fuel mileage though...and idle is still OK??

New EGR valve is on the way!! :bows:

Stay tuned!! :bandit:

I guess you've looked at your plugs.

Marauderjack

Yes David.....Plugs look fine but if it is an intermittant misfire they would probably not show anything??

Listening to the exhaust it sounds fine with no apparent missing and actually today there was no evidence of jerking at all and I ran it with the TC locked at 53 MPH!! :bows:

I guess I'll have to wait until it surfaces again or gets worse.

I encountered this problem on my 96 4.6L Gt. I replaced the egr valve(170000 it was time). Before I replaced the valve, I threw an exhaust gas code. Once replaced, I threw an O2 sensor code. I ignored that one for a couple of days, then the check engine light started blinking. Out came the Ford authorized service manual and the mechanic hat. Next, I discovered that the extra codes the engine was turning out were related to the spark plug on cylinder one misfiring. Checked it out and replaced one spark plug wire. While this only served to satisfy me, it seems (after talking to a few other mechanic buddies) that my initial estimate was correct. The egr valve kicking the bucket caused several other areas within the already delicate driveline system to begin to fail....so, my advice, replace the egr and do a thorough evaluation of the other related systems before you sign off on the problem being fixed. Oh yeah, all of the above issues produced the same symptom of moderate bucking at speed. That is just my two cents.

New EGR Valve....20 minutes to install and VOILA.......FIXED!!!!

I even returned it to the "stock" program and the engine ran fine but WHAT A STUPID TRANSMISSION MANAGEMENT SCHEME!!!!! :mad2:

I know they are trying to escape the "gas hog" designation but give me a break?? The only time the car acts like it is OK is WOT!!?? Even then it ain't right.....I slowed down to about 35 MPH and it was in 4th with the TC locked....1100 RPM's...Chug-Chug-Chug!!

Back to SCT "Super Tune" and WOW......FAST and CRISP!! :bows: :banana2:

Honestly....If I had not found the ability to tune this thing and get the shifting right I would have sold it before a year was up!! :bigcry:

Anyway....to all who care...If yours starts jerking and bucking at cruise or slight acceleration with the TC locked it is almost always a bad EGR valve.....about $75.00, 30 minutes to install and ready to go again!! :D

Back to the idea of deleting the EGR like I recently did.....
Just made a round trip to Florida in the Marauder.
Averaged 19mpg with a motor making 600 flywheel horsepower. No EGR.
Gotta love it.

Turned out that I had a vaccum leak as well at the rubber portion off the hard plastic tube of the (thingy that plugs into the valve cover) and that was casusing issues.

The EGR path through the intake 'horn' was clogged with carbon. Cleaned all that out and the EGR valve itself appeared to be working again.

Then the IAC showed its true self and became intermittent, needing a smack to open up. This caused stalling in reverse and occationally at stop lights, preceded by a stumbling volt gauge reading.

Replace the IAC today and all seems well for now. No more stumbling, and so far, no feeling of T/C engage/disengage in drive gears over two.

We'll see in the morning on a dead cold start.

How hard is it to replace an EGR? Will I need any special tools, and do I have to buy the gasket seperate?

It is easy.....hardest part is breaking loose the exhaust tube on the EGR valve.....go fer it!!
