How many camshafts do our marauders have? I was under the impression of 1 until I saw the 2005 mustang on motorweek and they said the 4.6 had 2. Also how many gears does the tranny have on my 2003? Thank you

^^^^What he said^^^^^FOUR CAMSHAFTS!
When you want to change them, just take $1,200 out of your pocket to buy a set of cams. :(

I want a lopey idle, which doesn't seem popular around here. I just don't know if I want one for $1,200...

Yeaaaaaah...Okay.
4 cams, yes, no doubt.
I see/feel 3 actual gears ratios, and a forth "electronic overdrive", maybe a gear, maybe not.
Gear, or, not gear, this is my question...

I thought it was just a band?

Yeah, they'll take the lump out of your wallet and put a 'lump' in your idle... ;)

Right now the $1200 lump in the idle puts a lump in my throat

1200 + install = 25 - 30 HP and bling bling lope. Not worth it. In my book. Search around, I think there are test results here somewhere

$1200 plus (if the lift is really high the springs and possibly valves will have to be replaced too) and install costs about another $1000, so you're looking at close to $2500 for 25-50 hp. Not sure if anybody on here has done it or posted about it, but several of the 'stang forums have threads about it and power gains vary from about 25 to as much as 50 hp, but most of them lose a little in the low rpms to make more power up high.
Whenever I get around to putting a built motor in mine I'm planning to use the Ford FR500 cam kit which includes cams, springs, valves for about $1300-1500.

If your doing a rebuild, that is differnet since your there already. I would not change the stock cams simply because the cost is way too high

DOHC = Dual Over-Head Cams.
32 valves = 4 per cylinder.
Designed to wind. Here's the equation...
32V x DOHC = High RPM capability!
(hemispherical combustion chamber design also gives great airflow)
4 speed electronic overdrive transmission = 4 forward gear ratios, electronically controlled (for the most part). 4th "clutch" is a band. It stops rotation of the drum connected to the overdrive planteary gears to give a true overdrive ratio, greater than 3rd gear, which is 1 to 1.
Anybody know the actual ratio?

Anybody know the actual ratio? Just so happens I do.
1st is 2.84:1
2nd is 1.55:1
3rd is 1:1
4th is 0.7:1
NB this is the same for either the 4R70W or 4R75W.

I'm not planning on changing the cams at all just wanted to know. I still find 4 hard to believe, but hey I didn't know a diesel didn't have spark plugs till 2 years ago. The more you know.

..and yet your screen name is Motorhead. very odd.

ya mean we have a Hemi under the hood?! :P

ya mean we have a Hemi under the hood?! :PYup. As much a hemi as anybody else and better because of the DOHC 32V design.
Geometrically, the old headless Offenhauser formula 1 engines are the only engines I'm aware of that had a true hemispherical combustion chamber, which would be exactly one half of a sphere. What was different about the venerable 426 "Hemi" was that the valves (2) went towards the center of the cylinder, freeing up air flow. Also this geometry allowed for higher compression without sacrificing cam geometry to keep the valves from contacting the pistons.
Ours is better because we have everything a "Hemi" had going for it plus we have 4 valves per cylinder that are smaller and lighter giving higher rpm capability plus dual overhead cams eliminating the heavy lifters and push rods giving even more rpm capability.
The only thing Ford doesn't have is the name brand copywright for the word "Hemi". Chrysler owns that.

Ford could copyright "Hemi4V" or 4vHemi"
Now we need the cubes Dodge has. More cubes and more valves should mean more HP

I thought DCX (there is no more 'Chrysler' ) current hemi is actually a 'pent head'

Bored to 5.0 (305 cid) and I stuck with the stock stroke (although I upgraded to a forged Cobra crank).
I put in a set of Crower cams, springs, and +1mm SS valves while they were building the engine.
I didn't really need the springs because the Crower Cams that I bought would work with the OEM valvetrain,
but it was relatively cheap insurance against valve float when I wind her up tight.
The idle didn't change too much, I can notice it, but it is in NO WAY lumpy...
BTW: They used to call the BOSS 429 a 'SEMI HEMI'.
