Any suggestions for repairing damage to the MM wheel? If i can figure out how to include pictures, i'll post some, but essentially, when the rear tire went flat, it popped off the rim and allowed the rim to come into (brief) contact with the road service. So now pretty much the whole edge of the rim has been sc***** and is quite rough. Sending it for refinishing sounds like about a 300 CDN job and it doesn't warrant that. The spokes haven't been touched, just the rim as you imagine from contacting the road surface.
Any ideas? Dremel tool and grin followed by progressively finer sandpaper? Any product that would give it some kind of clearcoat protection?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Wheel Technologies will fix it for $125. You pay for shipping to them, they ship back free. At least in the US.

I screwed up a polished aluminum american racing rim a couple of months ago. All I did was hit it with the shaped dremel tool deburr bits, and then started at 800 grit sandpaper and polished all the way up to 2800 grit. Once that was done I machine (dremel) polished the wheel with mothers aluminum polish. Good as new.

Well, this weekend I will try the Dremel route, and if it doesn't look decent I might be running on the donut for a while until it comes back from being professionally done. Wes sounds pretty good to me.

Keep in mind that the MM wheels are clearcoated after polishing, so the dremel route will only get you half way there.

Is the spare the same size as the other rear tire? if not extended

use of missmatched tires on a limited slip diff can damage the diff...
tire diameter should be as close as possible..
Suggest swap rear tire to a front rim and use spare on the
front off the car...
recommend Prof shop to clearcoat rims..they wil corrode without it
and further rim leaks will be in your future...

Well, there isn't MAJOR damage to the rim, so I am hoping that dremelling will clean it up enough for me to be able to do this:

http://www.thepontiactransampage.com/clear.html

I don't think swapping a front tire to the rear would work very well, since the fronts are a different size and I would then have mismatched rears AND mismatched fronts. I am hoping that the only driving I have to do is from home to the tire place, but if the tires are slow to get here I will have to drive to work next week. However, wouldn't Ford have made sure that the spare would not cause diff problems? Can always turn off the TC.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. This is such a dandy site.

no put the rear tire on a front rim..then put that on the back

you did damage a rear rim right! its not the traction control but the
diff itself -- it will try to lockup when accelerating but if the two rear
tires are going different speeds all the time it will burn up the clutch packs
The T/C you can just turn off..Don't count on ford to make sure you have
the right size..most space saver tires are smaller that the originals..
Driving to the tire shop should not create a prob..if you plan to drive
any further..it would be wise to check..just put the spare beside the rear
tire and see if they're the same height..

They are in Michigan... did GREAT work on widening my wheels. I'm pretty sure they can handle the job. I don't know what they would charge. But give'em a shout.

Ah, OK, I misunderstood what you were saying. Unfortunately, right now I don't have a rear tire. Yes, if I have to send the wheel out, then what you are suggesting makes sense when the new tires get here. I really don't want to drive it at all except to the tire shop, but i have to get to work so I might not have any choice.
Thanks for the information. It would really make my day to screw up the diff as well.

Thanks AZ. I want to stay local if ZI can, so that the rim isn't off the car for any longer than necessary, but if I have to go farther afield, I'll look at these guys. Hell of a car they have outside their shop, in that photo on their website.

Where in AZ are you?

Stock03, welcome to the site! I have a similar problem on the front passenger wheel. Looks like the previous owner rubbed up against a curb. If/when I get money, I'll probably go hunting for a used one. You say you were quoted 300 Cdn.? Where in Canada are you?

I am in Vancouver.

The "quote" came from the garage that took my tire off the wheel--I asked about refinishing and they said that they send them out, but what I would be looking at would be from 200 to 300.
