Maury and I had talked earlier in the year about having a get together in Lufkin at our local drag track once the weather cooled down. So far, it hasn't cooled down, but we're fast approaching the end of the racing season. I've been checking the calenders and looked at what I thought were a couple of good dates: Oct 1 and Oct 22. I see that the picnic is scheduled for Oct 22 in Grapevine, so would any of you have an interest in coming up, down, or over to Lufkin in a couple of weeks on Sat., Oct 1 for an afternoon at the races?

Our local track ( www.pinevalleyracing.com ) opens at 3pm. One of our vendors has a hospitality suite in the tower at the track, and I might be able to get access to it. It's pretty sweet to be up in the a/c, with the chairs, and the nice bathrooms. After a few passes down the track, we could drive in to town for cruise night at Ray's, our local old-style with carhops drive-in hamburger joint. The first Sat night of the month is cruise night at Ray's with all the local hot rodders bringing out their rides. Nothing on the level of Chuck's in Grapevine, but a pretty decent showing most of the time.

Well, what do you guys think? Any interest in PVR on Oct 1?

Don't let this drop off the calender. I make regular trips to Houston and would love to attend. Please keep us informed. Make a date and I'll do my best to be there!

This is an annual event at the Ardmore Dragway just North of Ardmore. This is an invatational event held for the past 33 years celebrating one of ,if not the oldest, privately owned and operated drag strip in the country. Lots of family, friends and spectators. :banana2:

Mike, thanks for taking the lead on this---I am up to my ears in family and the picnic--right now, I am committed to taking my son-in-law and grandson to the airport Sat. morning---if I can get them there and continue to Lufkin, I will.
:banana2:  :burnout: :burnout: O K--all you local folks asked for a date and place for a late season drag race--THIS IS IT--post your intentions NOW so Mike can set this up--Mike--more info on hotels , etc would help. I'll be monitoring this closely and help in any way I can---I just want to get a run at a temperature less than 85 degrees :help: Let's make this a big turn-out--See you there (if Southwest doesn't mess with the schedules) Maury

I know Mike (Mrjones) is much too busy right now to even think about this---our prayers are with him and all the folks in Lufkin--I understand the track is in low country and with the rains, there is a possibility that they cannot get up and running by next week-end---please be patient and keep checking for late info--I'll do my best to get info to you----sure would like to do this, but Mother nature has a way of her own---Maury

Hey, I'm here, I'm dry, and obliviously, I have electricity! I'm happy. Only lost elect about 14 hours. The center of the storm passed a few miles to the east of us. I personally came out pretty well. Minor damage to the house, and no damage to any of the vehicles. My office didn't flood like before, but water did blow in through the doors and windows. Wind was pretty bad. We've got probaby 10,000 people here, including probably 2000 at our Expo center that was not a designated shelter. They ended up using it for people who were rescued from the highway at the last minute due to running out of gas. We have no gas here, and none anywhere close. I am glad that I have the district truck, with our fuel. We are planning on fueling some of the buses that came here loaded with people and are in our shelters. We can't have school again until we get our shelters cleared out.

But hey, we're happy to have come through in such great shape. My parents live in Center, and they even made it through OK, with the center of the storm passing right over the top of them.

Looks like maybe we should try the drag track thing again in the spring when the track reopens.

Mike, my son, Kevin got back home in Palestine today--he had nothing but praise for the way the people and government handled things--he was on duty in Woodland Heights Hospital from Friday afternoon--the man killed by the falling tree was an old family friend---was my brother's next door neighbor. I hope things get back to normal as smoothly as possible. All of us appreciate the effort you put in to set up the racing date---I think next Spring would be great---start making plans early enough and we can get it done for an early COOL race day. Please keep in touch---if there is anything any of us can help out with ---don't hesitate to let us know---Hope Smokey made out OK. I'll miss the State Fair Show this year---unexpected schedule change---hope to visit with you soon, Maury

We'll try to put something together for next spring when the season kicks off again. The cool thing about doing it here is having access to the hospitality suite in the tower.

:coolman: Sorry the original date was missed due to the inclement weather, but now if this happens in the Spring maybe I can make it. It would be great to meet some of you guys in person. Looking forward to it.
