Anyone around here know just how to remove only the horn cover without doing anything bad, like something that makes a boom and piiiiist sound? I want to remove the mercury badge thats on it right now and I really don't want to goof anything up. Thanks guys.

I know the first thing you MUST do is disconect the battery terminals. Any work on it could result in a face full O'Bag.:depress:

Disconnect the battery and remove the two plugs behind the steering wheel with a small screw driver. There are two small nuts under the plugs that hold the air bag to the wheel...remove them and the center section can be pulled away. Unplug the air bag and you have it...but I'm not sure you can access the center badge??
I took mine off my 2000 CV to replace the steering wheel and really didn't look at it closely??
Good Luck!!

I do have the small gods head stick-on overlay on mine, which is nice, & does dress it up ... but I would love to see a more up-town permanent solution.
One of my far fetched ideas has always been ..... a complete REPLACEMENT steering wheel center section, that uses a high quality chrome gods head emblem. Why a whole NEW center section & not just the emblem you ask ?.
Well ... rather than using just a flat solid emblem replacement, part of the emblem would be "open" ... like say the Toyota emblem is on this steering wheel below(the 1st photo). IMHO, this would look pretty damn sharp, with the dark color of the steering wheel center, coming thru(like in the Toyota wheel). This center steering wheel section, would be designed & molded from the get go ... to have that gods head emblem fitted in it(the same as this Toyota wheel was designed for that emblem to be fitted into it). NOT just a flat generic counter-sunk section, where one could stick any flat thing in/over top of, they wanted to, as long as it would fit circumference wise(like we can basically do NOW, on our cars steering wheel center emblem).
Now getting even MORE far - fetched ...
Never being all that crazy in the overall general design of our steering wheels (not just the center emblem issue) ... I'd love to be able to really go all out, & put an eniterely different steering wheel in - period.
Keeping my hand in the Ford parts bin ... I'd go with an 03-05 Explorer/Mountaineer style steering wheel(2nd photo) ... using the above gods head idea for the center section. I really like the layout of that wheel ... way better looking than what we've got IMHO, all it needs is the perforated leather(& even that isn't a must, more of a personal preference thing).
If anyone reading this, has the means to make such a thing a reality .....
Feel free to run with my idea ... but I would like 1st dibs on the finished product, at a rea$onable discount.

Perforated leather covers are available @ the SS Inserts site. That's a start.

Perforated leather covers are available @ the SS Inserts site. That's a start. Now that I think about it .....
The Explorer/Mountaineer has a column shift vs our floor shift ... I'd imagine the column is probably a thicker circumference due to this(more internal hardware) ... which would mean the back part of the steering wheel where it meets the column, would be as well.
Long story short ... probably couldn't do it, even if everything else was compatiable or at least ABLE, to be made to work(air bag/wiring etc etc).
Would have to stick w/the new center section I described, for our current steering wheel .....
Or start from $cratch ... emphasis BIG time on $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$(complete custom).

Something like the Toyota steering wheel is what I'm doing but I can't start until I figure out how to safely remove the dinky little badge thats already on there.

I have the Current God's head emblem over my hockey sticks in my steering wheelThanks, I used a 1963 Mercury Meteor horn ring Gods head from Ebay and reused the original hockey stick part so it would say Mercury. A mix of new and old you know. There's a funny story to the other pieces....It keeps looking back at me!

Have you thought about what that cool emblem is going to do to you, if your air-bag ever gets deployed?
