The friday before Katrina
The friday before Katrina I left N.O. @3:45am, dropped my S/C MM at Reinhart’s and drove Dennis back to N.O. arriving at 10:45pm to realize we would be evacuating tomorrow when I saw the report that Katrina had shifted 300 miles to the West.
My wife had to work at Memorial Hospital on Saturday, fortunately she pulled Hurricane duty for Ivan so she was off the schedule. It’s been very disorienting being in 7 different beds in 3 weeks and working in a different city.
Thanks to Dennis and Sheila we had Gainesville with the Mustang Club today. Temp was 103*! First time I have raced since May and second time w/ the S/C.
My first runs were r/t .571 / 60’ 2.034 / et 13.295, then .342 / 2.324 / 13.652, then .806 / 2.489 / 13.979 , then .354 / 2.276 / 13.663. Then .127 / 2.122 / 13.489, then .109 / 2.248 / 13.613, starting to get the reaction time so lets try to go for a launch.
Switch to Nittos, courtesy of Dennis who lent me his new ones and Zack’s encouragement. 458 / 1.879 / 13.071. It was my 1st time w/ DR and the staff was so nice to help me back into the water box and let me back up to restage when I over powered the brakes. The next run I tried launching her by flashing the Stallion 3,500 w/ my left foot locked on the brake but she over powered the breaks and bogged.
Decided to take a break and we had the best BBQ ribs, pork, chicken and beans. Under a tent to keep out the 103* sun! Thanks Debi!
I ask Zack how I should launch and he says just nail it.
Next run w/ DR .244 / 1.879 / 12.881 @ 105.46!
I line up next to a beautiful red MM. This is the first MM I have ever lined up against. I get in the zone.
My r/t is .091 to his .144, ahead by .053, yahoo! Then I open up, my 60’ is 1.867 to his 2.151, ahead by .284. I feel the S/C winding up, my 330’ is 5.385 to his 5.681, ahead by .296. I know he is got to be there but I don’t know where. Then the 1/8 is 8.285 to his 8.590 ahead by .305.
I know that red beauty is charging on me, my 1,000’ is 10.832 to his 11.130, he closed to .298! Fortunately the ¼ comes up and my ET is 12.985 @104.72 to his 13.290 @104.31.
Wow, I crossed first by .3580!
Next .142 / 2.108 / 13.188 @104.59, then .182 / 1.875 / 13.008 @104.21.
Zack asked me how it’s running and where the 1-2 is, I tell him it is @5,600rpm. Zack offers to tweak but Dennis reminds us it is like that because we have the different size DR on and the 1-2 was set for the KDW. Zack says I could gain 3 tenths on the 1-2 by upping it.
I went and met the owner of the red beauty, she has a lot of class with Gods Head hitch cover, S/C on the side and red tshirts w/ silver gods head! She looks better than new. He is Carfixer. His wife came by to chat and I wanted to ask her if she could tell me how I could get some of those custom details done on my car. They both are a class act.
My last run is w/ Dennis brother Steve in the car I run my first redlite since FF Weekend in March, -.027 / 1.972 / 13.320 @101.76.
I am very pleased for ¾ tank of gas, full trunk, 20lb lap top and 30lbs of survival gear!
It is a testament to these cars that a daily driver w/ 51,000 miles, 110 runs down the track and a good tune can still play at the races.
Thanks so much to Dennis, Sheila, Debi, Smoky, RF, Zack, Sgt Mc, Terri (let me use his pro pit area) , Tony, Big Dog, Jason and everyone who made this possible!
