View Full Version : My first mod! Bilateral Mufflerectomy

The credit goes to mm.net member Uncle Buck for this one. He went to a local shop recently to see about replacing the stock mufflers with something that sounded more agressive. The shop owner says that the resonators in the stock tips are probably enough sound deadening without ANY muffler at all. Let's try it that way first, then if you don't like the sound we'll put it back on the rack and I will sell you some performance mufflers. Buck LOVED the sound. My wife loved the sound too, when we heard Buck's car at a couple of our local meets. Blue Thunder had bilateral mufflerectomy this past Saturday. Cost of the operation? $42.60 including tax. So far, we both love the sweet noise. Wife told me last night "You KNOW I want my Mustang to sound like that, don't you?" She was driving when we left the shop, grinning and giggling uncontrollably. If we find we don't like it after a while, the operation is completely reversible-that's the beauty of it. The sound may be too loud for the fainthearted, but so far I am liking it a lot. :D Sounds like NASCAR when ya mash the gas hard. Pretty quiet at low throttle. I took some videos this morning on the way in to work (with my cheapo wecam). The video sucks but you can hear the exhaust. These were done with the A/C off and front windows down. PM if you want the shop info, located in Orlando.

I like it. I'd consider it, but I've already replaced my tips with ones with no resonators. That might be a bit too loud.

Anyone with stock Marauder tips lying around that you want to sell cheap or give away, please let me know. Outside appearance can be rough, they will be mostly hidden on the wife's Mustang. They just need to have the resonator intact.

Sounds like a push rod engine!!!!:DI had a 1960 merc monterey montclair with headers/dual exhaust with glasspacks for a while - I think it sounds a lot like a sixties or seventies big block muscle car with Cherry Bombs on it.

What was the process of doing the mod?
I need some beefier sound and was thinking of Ford Dual Modes with rest factory. This may suit my needs.

How is the drone in the cabin going down the freeway? I had a 94 4.6 Tbird with no mufflers(straight pipe in place) and it had drone in the cabin around 2000 to 2400 rpm(but less than the 3 chamber flowmasters I removed). I like the idea but my MM needs to be quiet on the freeway, I'm considering the Ford dual mode mufflers as well.
Thanks for the info.

I don't get it. You have no mufflers, just the stock tips with the resonators?

Been running them with delete tips since July...system has "aged" nicely and the sound @ WOT is a hardcore snarl ... Just my feedback to you...

Jon aka 69mach1 :burnout:Haven't been on the highway enough to find out yet. Making a trip to Miami in October for vacation with a car full of people heading for a cruise. So far, I think the problem will be with rear seat passengers having to speak up a bit to be heard. We don't do much highway driving, so it was not a concern for us. The important thing is that I saved the original mufflers so they could be reinstalled if needed in the future. I really decided to go ahead and do this, because there is always Plan B, having some aftermarket performance mufflers put on if it is just TOO loud for us. I took a short drive on the interstate to get a feel for the sound on highway - with overdrive OFF at about 65-75 you can hear the exhaust, but it was not annoying at all. When I flicked on the o/d at that speed, it actually increased the sound slightly. So I guess it was actually a little quieter when running at higher RPMs. Oh, yeah... and you can't sneak in or out of the house at night anymore! :o :burnout:

The V8 Chevy truck I drive at work lost it's muffler a month ago and I was surprised how relatively quiet it is. I can believe this is a good mod-especially for the money. I'm surprised this hasn't been discussed before. I've read that the cat. convert's kill a lot of noise and it seems to be so.

I need some beefier sound and was thinking of Ford Dual Modes with rest factory. This may suit my needs. The OEM mufflers were cut out with a Sawzall. Then, pipe was custom bent and welded in place of what was removed. Now there is just plain old piping all the way from the second catalytic converters back to the stock Megs resonator tips. Wish I'd have thought to take the camera with me. I know how you guys love photos. Both mufflers rode around the rest of the day in the trunk. :D They are now enjoying their early retirement under my workbench in the utility room.

Guess it wasn't to loud after all. I expected to hear car alarms going off while you were in the garage. That is the ultimate loudness test.

Hhhmmmmm... I'll have to try that... might be fun to do on my lunch break:) I try to keep things under control in the garage because there is always someone driving like an idiot, coming around the blind corners on the wrong side at 30 mph. I know that sooner or later somebody is going to bash into me in that garage. It does roar deafeningly in there if I rev it a little bit.

I went and got a local verbal quote today to do a mufflerectomy, they told me $375 with good stainless and $150 aluminized. What the !!!
Cheaper for me to drive from Cleveland to Orlando @$3/gal, get it done, stay at folks, then drive home!
Another option, what if I do it myself and use flex stainless clamped to pipes. Is using flex a dumb arse way of doing things and I can get my butt kicked for using it?
:D very nice. . .sounds a lot like my Bullitt

Sounds like they misunderstood what you wanted. I would try another shop or two. I was talking to a friend at work today-he is buying a new truck soon and already planning his mods. He said that even on Ford diesel 4x4s (what he is wanting) they pull off the mufflers and put on resonator tips. So there must be someone somewhere in your area that will know what the heck you are talking about.

Ok, I couldn't wait anymore to see what it sounds like. Went and connected a 2" flex pipe 21" long and two adapters in place of the right muffler. NOTE: was rubbing against my stabilizer links. Worst case I would have someone tack the muffler back on if I didn't like it.
Started the car up and was louder than usual, but I was unsure yet. Took for test drive. Sounded AWSOME, I'm going to have REAL SS pipes welded in soon. After the burn in, the sound seemed to be a bit less, or my hearing was getting used to louder sound. Inside the car seemed to drone a bit at times when power was needed, otherwise I can learn how to manipulate the sound with the gas pedal. The Megs tip was slightly under my rear bumper cover, will probably extend it some if I get the weld done.
This was a ~ $20 mod, 2hrs for semi-amateur.
ck - How would I get mid exhaust support to hold up exhaust? Did you have the shop re-use the muffler hanger?
He said that even on Ford diesel 4x4s (what he is wanting) they pull off the mufflers and put on resonator tips. Uh...if you're going after that "garbage truck" sound...then yes. A diesel without a muffler sounds like crap...and resonator tips are for Hondas.
I haven't commented on this thread, 'cause if you're happy with the sound then more power to ya "ck"...but, I'd never perform this at my shop.

When the money becomes avail, I'll prob go with the Dual Modes, need 4.10's installed first. Thanks for feedback.

UPDATE: Nice trip to Miami, came back to Orlando a week later after the Caribbean cruise. A friend of ours that was taking the same cruise drove us down in our Marauder, as she was familiar with Miami area. Travel time each way was three to four hours depending on stops. I was in the front passenger seat, wife was in driver side back seat. Trunk fully jammed with heavy luggage, back seat passenger side full of stuff too. :) Although our driver took it very easy on the gas pedal, the wife reports that in the rear seat at times the noise causes her some pain. This appears to be at some certain combos of rpm/mph that bother her. (In general, my wife is more noise-sensitive than I am.) Some days I love the sound, some days I wish it was quieter. It looks like I will be having Magnaflows or something similar installed soon to quiet things down a bit. Will definitely have to be done before we take another long road trip.
