I recently (last Friday) became the proud new owner of a 03’ MM. I came across these forums and think you guys/girls are a wealth of information. I have one question about my new purchase.

I have noticed that when I start the car first thing in the morning it has a tendency to run HOT…. Like almost to the point of over heating hot. The weird thing is I can hear the fan working but it still does not cool off. The only way I have found to get the temp back down to normal is to run the air conditioner! Usually as soon as I turn the air on the temp gauge will drop from the red zone all the way down to normal.

Has this been a common issue with this car? It still has some factory warranty left so it is going in next week for a check up. Could it just be a faulty thermostat?

Sounds like it could be a problem with your thermostat

I don't remember hearing that as being a common problem at all. Mine (04) has never ran hot. You are doing the right thing by taking it in. Good luck, hopefully it's nothing serious.

:coolman: Congrats on the new purchase. This is not a common problem with '03 or '04 models that I have ever heard of. Hope you have some warranty left..get that thing fixed, so you can enjoy the good life!!

There is not therapy for the addiction that is the Mercury Marauder. A few signs of the addiction include looking for a reason to drive, driving with no reason, washing your Marauder, with a 100% forcast of rain, and other things like that. Welcome and enjoy.

Welcome to the MM site. :D :welcome:
Did you actually check to see if the fan is running.
When you activate the A/C that will automatically turn on the cooling fan.

Welcome aboard. I recalled that sometimes there is a big air buble the can get stuck in the upper area of the engine. the remedy is to also top off the burp screw in the upper pipe with coolant. Hope this helps.

Anyway, I bought my car w/ 6,000 miles and needed a thermostat at 12,000
(over heated) I think other members here had that problem...

Welcome...
4 things come to mind that have been associated with overheating:
1) thermostat
2) low coolant level (you can't fill it from the reservoir, it has to be filled thru the plug in the coolant crossover tube)
3) fan (as posted above, the ac makes the fan come on, so maybe it's not working properly under normal control conditions)
4) temperature sensor (there are 2 of them, I believe one gives the gauge reading and the other provides temp input to the computer for turning on the fan)

Well it looks like the big air bubble might be the issue. I had the car in on Monday and they could not duplicate the problem (of course not) but then later in the week (today) I was driving by the dealer and it started to over heat so I pulled in........ after a quick check the first thing out of the shop managers mouth was "air bubble"
