Has anyone ever thought of modifying the existing air box to gain more air?

Easiest way to do that is to remove the rubber piece from the front of it. It connects the air box to one of the two holes in the radiator support panel. I also enlarged the hole in mine but it didn't make much difference. Just go ahead and get the k&n kit with intake tube and conical filter.

The OEM box doesnt leave much room for change, you can get it to flow better by using a K&N drop in filter.

Blackmobile, welcome to the site...

On the subject of modifying the airbox, do a search...there's a LOT of info to be found. Short answer...it doesn't do much.

I wouldn't do it IMHO.

Save for a K&N drop in, or better yet the K&N Fuel Injection Performance Kit (air intake tube and filter) and do it right.

I have a K&N, but I was thinking more along the line of drilling wholes or slots just below the filter element. Just a thought since a friend of mine gave me the idea.

You could, but you increase the chance of debris and water getting in, and after that you would still not realize any performance gain that you could measure.

Consider some CAI. there are 3 choices available, they all provide improvement that can be measured.

I found getting the K&N Drycharger-Wrap to be very rewarding in the mind-comfort department.

The K&N Aircharger with the Dry Charger Wrap is the perfect first mod. It is reasonably priced, easy to do yourself. Gets you involved under the hood and you can hear and feel the difference in performance. Note: Moding will be infectious and there is no end...That is why we love this site and the nuts on it. Good luck and welcome to the LARGEST and we think best group...Sunshine State Marauders. If you use the search function you will find enough mod information to keep you busy reading for the next 6 months.Dennis:beer:

I had the K&N drop in filter, removed the rubber snout and opened the front of the airbox as much as I could. Didn't notice much of an improvment. I then replaced it all with a JLT and I could fell the difference. I believe the JLT and K&N give you about the same performance, except the JLT is cheaper.

I like my Paul's High Performance airbox. I think Dennis Reinhart sells these now.

Summit racing sell's the K&N kit for around $285.00. We also have vendors who sell the Pauls air intake kit and it is less Money and does the same thing. The best thing to do is stop by one of our meets and look for your self which you like better.
