I could swear I asked this question before but I can't find that thread.
I am asking (again, I think) that given the data collection abilities of some of the newer programmers if any of them (or some other device) could display pings as they happen and/or keep a count in some fashion?

I'm getting a laptop this week so I can check out the data logging capabilities of my Xcal2... I'll look for the Pings.

Using the Xcal2, your ping would show up as a flucuation in the knock sensor readings. You would see the change in the spark and fuel pressure readings also.

Hmm, you know I haven't used my Xcal2 in this fashion yet, I'd like to get a better undersatnding for whats going on as my engine runs in different conditions, gotta give this a shot!
Good to know about pings, it would be interesting to see if you get any pinging from various fuel. For instance, 93 octane at one station might not be as good as it is from another station. I'm always concerned when I fill up wondering exactly how good the gas is...

Any idea on how this interpreted by Autotap? I can't remember how my LS1's OBD-II computer spits out knock information, but my GTA's early generation ECM just keeps count of each knock 'event' and you also see a corresponding ignition retarding for a certain preset amount of time.
With my Marauder's scans, I see some number that is constantly increasing and wrapping around (if I recall correctly). How the heck am I supposed to detect individual knock events? If anyone knows how to interpret this stream of info, let me know.

Give Lidio a call. When I have a question like this, that is what I do.

Would he entertain a question from a non-customer? (My car is, and will most likely remain, completely completely factory stock).
It's not even for tuning reasons. (really glad I didn't shell out the cash for the pro racer tuning package, considering the road I've been down with this car). I was just wondering if there was a correlation between audible ticking and any reaction on the part of the knock sensor. I mean, when you've seen the way the valves rock side-to-side within their bad guides on a ticking head, you start to remember all those knock sensor tests involving rapping an exhaust manifold with a screwdriver handle... and you realize how similar those two sounds can be to the human ear.

I beleive he would. He always has a positive attitude when I call, PM or email him. And now that I think of it, I can be pretty annoying too.
Call him.

I have yet to play with the data logging functions, but it's on my list of things to do soon. I knew there was a good reason that I already had a laptop.

Some KS's are so sensitive that exhaust pipe chattering/clattering will result in "pinging".
