I don't know if this has been talked about because frankly I just learned this term while on the crapper reading a newer Popular Mechanics- you know what- lemme just shut up and get on w/ it.
Quoted from article
That empty piece of plastic is called a Helmholtz resonator. Really. And it's just empty. Actually not: It's full of air. It's attached to the ducting between your air cleaner and the intake manifold. It's there to reduce the noise your engine intake duct makes.
here's the full explaination:
http://www.popularmechanics.com/automotive/sub_care_clinic/1888037.html
I'm sure it is talked about but nobody put the buzz word that I was looking for. Anyone taken it off? What did you use to cover the opening? Did it look stupid? How does it sound now?
My only comparison is a coworkers f150 because he has a full intake kit up to the manifold. I don't like how his sounds because at say under 10mph his truck just makes a loud droning noise over everything. It's annoying. Lemme know what you've found or if you are going to experiment. I know I'm going to be looking for something to cap the hole.

That's the first "mod" we did.

Don't bother with that or the factory airbox and hose, scrap all of that for a JLT CAI...you will thank me for it when you Marauder roars at 1/2 throttle. Here is a picture and look Ma no Hemloch do hicky...

I appreciate the advice but I went with the PHP intake from Reinhart. Don't get me wrong; I did have quite an argument w/ myself on which of the 3 choices there are on which I would eventually pick. The JLT is definitely a very good deal. What kills me is if you look at a PHP intake w/ a metal tube- man, it looks great.

Our 2003 E-250 has it but it's right next to the TB.
The 2005-up CVPIs have one, while the 2004 CVPI does not. I have the 2004 CVPI zip tube mated with a 2003 Marauder airbox/MAF, and it's fairly loud.

Whoa Metroplex - you're saying you changed out the tube?

The tube can be changed out fairly easily on the Crown Vics. Keep in mind the Marauders have an oval throttle body vs. the circular throttle body on the Crown Vic. I have a metal intake with Jet Hot coating from ADTR.net on my Crown Vic, hooked into a 75mm B&K throttle body and an 80mm Marauder MAF and MM airbox.
The '04 CVPI intake tube takes out some of the kinks (bends) in the traditional intake tube and mates up the the 80mm MAF from the Marauder better.
Just for clarification...Metro drives a Crown Vic not a Marauder (as per his signature).
Whoa Metroplex - you're saying you changed out the tube?

I myself could NEVER understand why there had to be any sort of resonators in the air intake OR the exhaust of our MM's.
Removing them does NOT create any excess noise that is even REMOTELY loud or offensive IMHO ..... these cars weren't exactly intended to be silent lil' church mice.
I think the sound is still PLENTY tame & more than acceptable.
In fact ..... I'd love it if my Town Car sounded EXACTLY the same.
FoMoCo baffles(no pun intended) us once again.

OEM testing of NVH is a bit different from the typical expectations of a gearhead. They must conduct testing in closed cells with the hood open and closed. I'm sure they have their reasons for adding a $10+ piece of material on the air tube.

I ran a short ram fabbed intake for a week. Went to lowes and bougt parts to fab a replacement cap and it was a night and day sound change. I liked the resonated sound better IMHO. Once I get an actual production intake I'll have a much difrent opinion in sound.

Helmholtz resonator.
This sounds like a Powerful Weapon Germany used during WW2

... werks whin yer girl lost her diafram too!
Seriously I'm OK with mine. I'm not looking to have Sgt. Buford T. Justice sitting around with the windows down listening for loud cars hearing me opening up the throttle. I like mine nice and quiet up front and like Mario A used to say, "Whats' a behind me is of a no consequence."
Hopefully next year they can hear the whistle of twin turbochargers dwindling as the distance between us grows. :D
But as I said, I'm not interested in letting them know I'm coming. Not with loud CAI's, or blower noises (gears or gals). ;)

Not with loud CAI's, or blower noises (gears or gals). ;) No need cause everyone keep saying they hear "Gearing Noises "when I go foreward or reverse. I actualy had people occasionaly come up to me and ask what kind of blower it was!

See I like this. Uses the Stock Air Box. I could powder coat it to look stock. Is something like this available for MM?

See I like this. Uses the Stock Air Box. I could powder coat it to look stock. Is something like this available for MM?I don't know about this man. I'm thinking the motor mounts aren't that stiff and there's got to be some toqueing side to side and that set-up looks like it must be stressing the rubber tube connections something awful. Maybe even break the airbox off the fender pant mounts there, or worse! Damage the MAF sensor!
That set-up doesn't look like the kind of thing that will last very long to me.

The only thing available that is similar is the Metco carbon fiber intake tube. The oval throttle body on the MM makes it difficult to make a piece like the one pictured.
As for the rigid piece breaking things or coming loose, lots of members are using the Metco piece with no problems reported.

I'm confused, rod... what are you asking?
.... wait a minute... I see what you're asking now.
DR has sold a tube from a supercharger kit before that can be powder coated. Search the forums for php and there used to be pics of it on a thread Dennis started a couple of months ago. It's rather pricey considering DR has to special order them from vortech (i believe) and he has to do a little machining on them, but it looks pimp.

found a plumbing part at home depot. 2" plumbing plug. I don't know the exact words but here are pictures. price around 4 bucks. part is 2 metal discs w/ rubber ribbing in the middle. screw the thing tighter and it fills in the gap. worked like a charm and about 30 second install time

I saw that and said don't want the bling so I got the donut and PVC endcap. Once I paint it black I'll reinstal it. The sound wuth SRI and the Delete cap is noticibly louder and 5.0ish IMHO.

That's funny... I didn't think of it as bling; considering it was four bucks.
Maybe if I powder coat it.....

I thought the walrus snout is where you're suppose to hook-up the vacuum hose for cleaning the interior. What! You're not supposed to connect a hose and suck in garbage? I wondered why the dealer aftermarket accessory salesman was laughing so hard. Did anybody else buy the water-to-gasoline conversion kit too?
