I'm looking to replace my whole speaker setup with aftermarket stuff. Has anyone replaced the all their stock speakers? I was looking at going with 6 1/2 all around, and I imagine it would take some modification. Has anyone done this yet? The only easy option would be 5 1/4 all around, so I don't have to cut anything(sound difference might be worth the dremel time). I don't want 6x8's because the subwoofers wouldn't have a pretty interaction with the speakers, plus I need some low end frequency response. I did some searching, and didn't find anyone that has redone their speaker setup. I'm not one of those guys who blasts music in parking lots or even with the windows down at stop lights. I like to listen to my music loud and have it sound perfect. I have the time and the means to accomplish this, but some help with previously experienced people would make my life easier. Thanks fellas

Forget your plans. Use Infinity Reference 6x8's all around and you won't be sorry.

What he /\ said.

The Infinity Reference with the pivoting tweeter is a nice speaker.

I replaced all (4) in my MM with the 6 x 8's & I have a pair of 6x9's in the back of my 72 Toro.

A few people have gone the Kenwood 6 x 8 route(not sure what model) & have been happy as well IIRC.

By the way, I just used a pair of 6 and a 1/2 Reference's in one of my Fox bodies and that car rocks!

I am using Kenwood eXcelons and they were a significant improvement over stock.

Installed following THIS (http://www.mercurymarauder.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1872)thread.

i just checked infinity's site and it looks like they have 6x8s in reference and in the kappa series now also (new this year). the thier branding goes perfect>kappa>refrence so these should be even better for us.

Try these http://www.mjmautoinnovations.com/sak68t65.htm
I put 6.5's in my front doors and 6X9's in the rear. The rear speaker output from the head unit has very limited bass in the signal(as in none) so your rears will just for fill anyway.

Thanks for the link. When I mounted my 5.25s in a 6x8 hole I just made my own adapters from wood. This is much easier :D

Careful Gavin. The Kappas are indeed a higher end speaker but they are a two ohm piece versus the four ohms that the References are. The stock amp is not designed to drive a two ohm speaker. The Kappas would work well with an outboard amp in the mix.

I agree. I have the Excelons too, but I still think the References are a better buy and give better sound.

Damn your logic!!!
but good call, i didnt even notice the ohm difference.
2 ohm on a non-subwoofer. how odd...

I'd stay away from Kappas. They sound pretty good, but my brother has gone through 2 sets under warranty and then decided to toss them and buy something else because they keep blowing.

My setup is as follows:

Front Speakers: Boston Acoustics NX87 5"x7" + Boston Acoustics Neo Type-S tweeters and crossovers (to be installed).
Rear Speakers: Boston Acoustics NX87 5"x7"
Head Unit: Eclipse CD3434
Amplifier: Soundstream EGA 5700
Subwoofers: 2 X 12" JL Audio W3 in a ported enclosure

Boston speakers are a tad pricier than most, but their sound quality is sublime. The Boston NX87s are excellent on their own, hampered only by the poor factory speaker location in the doors. When I get my tweeters and crossovers installed I think the system will be exactly where I want it.

I originally did use the Bostons with the stock head unit and they worked fine. There was a noticable improvement in sound quality, but their true potential was only uncovered when I replaced everything.

you're welcome, and they work great. Just remember to put some sound deadener on both sides to eliminate any buzzing possibilities.

Anyone try replacing the factory sub with anything? I was wondering if it was possible so I can keep the trunk less cluttered and still pass the scca inspections. Also what size is the sub?
