I am getting a strange noise from under the glove box starting yesterday from my 04 MM. When I turn the key, it sounds like something is opening and when I turn the engine off, sounds like something is closing. The noise sounds almost like a long squeak. Also, when I lock the doors, get what sounds like a grinding noise as the locks engage. Only does that for the first couple of times and then stops. Anyone with a similar problem? I am dropping off at the L/M dealership tonight, would like some insight on this to pass along to the service rep.

It may be the auto leveler. Does it sound like an air pump? If not, the defentaly have it looked at ASAP.

Thanks for responding. Not the air pump. I can hear that go off. It is coming from right under the glove box. It sounds like it is closing, like a lever.

Had this noise myself last year. It's the vent door for the a/c-vent ductwork; the hinge/opening/closing mechanism needs lubing. I didn't try to fix it myself, took it to the dealer, and he showed me what was up. There's an airbox-looking thingy under the passenger side of the dash (and I'm using the highly scientific technical term there :cool4: ) where the door is. Drop that out and you should be able to access everything that needs lubing. Haven't had any problems since.

Cool, good info to know, my air door that switches from cool to hot seems pretty loud lately...

Thanks for the response. I think you hit it right on the head. Now I can tell the dealership what is wrong. Any ideas on what sounds like a grinding noise coming from the front door locks when they lock?
(what a great web site!!!!!)

Possibly the actuators are going. I've had actuators grind when they go bad. I also get a noice from under the dash on that side. However, It happens when I do not use the automatic setting.

Sounds like the selenoid that engages the automatic locks is not dis-engaging as quickly as it should. I believe there is a small gear that rotates when the selenoid engages it to lock the door.

I had my drivers door look actuator go once already ... it was grinding.

Sounds like it's going again ..... perhaps ever the LR one is going now too.

It's always been an intermittent thing for me ... one of them might do it today ... but then you won't hear anything un-usual for DAYS.

I'm thinking I might just leave them alone this time around if it gets no worse.

I'd rather wait & do it at 2yrs & 11 months or month 35 out of the 3/36 bumper to bumper ... if I don't buy an extended warranty.
