View Full Version : A chip/tuner question

I'm interested in getting a tuner at some point, but I have a couple of questions.
First, if you have the tuner installed and get ahold of bad gas, can the computer pull enough timing by using the knock sensor to keep from damaging the engine?
Second, can the tuner program the startup procedure so that the engine does not rev up on a cold start. I'm guessing that the factory programs the engine to rev up like it does for some emission related reason, but I'd REALLY like to eliminate that. My mustang and my wife's Durango are good about starting up cold and going right into an idle. I can hear the bearings rattle on the MM when it starts, and I don't like it.
Thanks.

Mine did that until I put Lidios tune in it. No more 3000 rpm starts

Wow Wes, now that you mention it, with Lidio's tune mine doesn't rev on start up either.
Never really paid attention to it.

My 04 purchased used with a SCT 2100 turner..no idea whose tune. Starts at idle also. Wish I had more information to share but needless to say as evidenced here I am clueless. Dennis:coolman:

All these paremeters can be adjusted with SCT tuning call me if I can help

Whats up with that?

I think the Ford program does the higher rev thing to make sure the cold, "thin" oil gets to every moving part, under no load, almost instantly!!??
I have the SCT aggressive tune and it does not do it but now I am running a "Modified" Ford engine tune with SCT's transmission management.....It ain't quite as fast but has a perfectly linear throttle response and NO BOG at WOT!! :argue:
I would be interested in backing the high revs down at start-up....Dennis, can you adjust a ".xtr" file?? I would also like you to try it in a car to see how you like it!!?? :bows:

This is caused by the large intake that holds a large volume of air this air is wnat causes the flare on start up and cna be adjusted through the dash pot settings
adjusted through the dash pot settings<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->Do you care to elaborate? Is that a name for a PCM parameter or is a physical adjustment?

Do you care to elaborate? Is that a name for a PCM parameter or is a physical adjustment? It is a parameter with in the SCT software that allows you to lower the cold start up idle
Thanks for the immediate reply! :D

Dennis,
I would like the cold start high idle lowered. Is this something we can do or do we have to send the tuner to you?
I have my .xtr file already.
Thanks

It's a easy fix call me tomorrow

DR lowered my cold startup idle speed on my 04 CV, plus some other "tweaks". I already had an Xcal2. He emailed me a new .xtr with all my requested parameters and all I can say is I am impressed! My Vic is now a smooth, well behaved machine and still performs when called upon to do so. It's a pleasure to drive again and the wife is happy as well!

I left it there cause I have remote start and it helps warm the car quicker. I will say get a tuner if you plan on doing anything to the car. Xcal2 for basic use enhances up and downshift with a positive shift feedback, datalogs, changes tire calibration if you get winter tires, and reads check engine light codes. I lost MPG from the tuner only because the car became "too much fun to drive"
