Yep - remember those shows and a couple more - what was the one with the family who could become robots - the dad was a giant gold robot while the mom stayed the same size and was silver, while the kid just got a helmet with some antennae?

Now we have anime all over the cartoons, so I guess that's what our kids will remember.

I remember both of these shows. Johnny found a special watch that the bad guys developed to control the robot with. Once Johnny spoke into the watch for the first time, only his voice and his voice alone controlled the giant robot. And so putting an end to their plan of taking over the world, and ultra man accidentally killed a young man. So in return he entered the dead man's body giving him life again, and the job to fight big monsters and evil doers,THE END. :D

I used to watch 8th man as a kid. I can still remember the show's theme song. http://www.alphalink.com.au/~roglen/tobor.wav

The 8th Man

1 9 6 5 (USA)

http://www.nostalgiacentral.com/images_tv/8thman.jpgThe 8th Man was a cartoon robot hero called Tobor ('robot' spelled backwards) who possessed the memories and personality of former cop Peter Brady who was ambushed by the evil Saucer Lips and left for dead.

The brilliant Professor Genius used the fallen Brady to breathe life into the mechanical marvel 8th Man, granting him all sorts of cool powers (super speed and strength, etc.) plus a whole collection of fighting gizmos and high-tech, malleable skin that made him a master of disguise.

The strangest part by far was the fact that when 8th Man ran low on energy he could recharge by smoking cigarette-like energy tabs, a lesson that would surely take today's kids' advocates from calm to apoplectic faster than you can say Chief Fumblethumbs (the top cop who 8th Man took into his confidence). It was nearly as odd that 8th Man had a second brain in his arm!

8th Man, originally a Japanese comic strip and cartoon, was imported and dubbed for American syndication audiences in 1965.

Try to rent the updated OVA "8 Man After." There was also a horrible live action movie made as well, so I recommend sticking with the animated series.

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005QBZ9.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

It's a very dark series, not for the kiddies.

Since the recent disappearance of 8 Man, a mysterious cyborg super hero created by Professor Tani, the city reels under "terrorist" assaults from murderous drug-crazed street gangs.

Meanwhile, Hazuma, an ex-cop who now runs his own detective agency, is hired to track down a missing scientist alleged to have made off with cybernetics from Professor Tani's laboratory. The missing hardware is reappearing as psycho-activated weapons grafted onto the bodies of the rogue "cyper-junkies." During his investigation Hazuma is brutally murdered.

Dr. Tani uses Hazuma as a bio-template to replace the missing 8 Man. As a cover, 8 Man maintains the original persona of the detective, yet must cope with the duality of the cynical private eye and maintain the balance as an emotionless super-android hero.

Based on the popular 1960's Japanese comic book and animation hero, 8 MAN AFTER draws from Kazumasa Hirai and Jiro Kuwata's original Science Fiction adventure to create a bold new super hero that embodies the essence of Philip K. Dick, with the persona of Philip Marlowe.

I know the feeling of working with younger people who don't remember the really cool shows.
There was:
Johnny Sokko and his Giant robot - Johnny controlled Giant Robot with a watch.
Ultraman - a man used the Beta capsule to transform into Ulrtaman.
Space Giants - a family of robots that could turn into rockets.
Spectruman - which I didn't watch but my friend did.
Marine Boy - anime
Astroboy - anime
SpeedRacer - anime
Kimba The White Lion - anime
Starblazers - anime
Robotech - anime
Voltron - anime

Hdirish50 if your from the Philly area like me you probably watched them on channel 48.

spub the first anime on US TV was "Astro Boy" - I cheated and looked it up.

JOHNNY QUEST!!! That was the best animated series...
Dr Benton Quest
Roger 'Race' Bannon
Haji
Bandit (dog)

That show was full of action, guns and violence!

Now we have 'tella tubby' and Barney B.S. and there is more youth violence than ever!

P.S. Ultraman had a wrinkly silver rubber suit and whenever he got into a REAL battle he would 'tucker out' and have to fly away for a recharge of his blinking red chest light.

Besides gigantor there is a cartoon that I watched and I must have been between 5-7 years old (I'm 46 Monday) that went like this. A young boy and several animals that were really aliens that took animal form. They befriended the boy and traveled around in a big wheel/tire. I remember one episode in particular, the aliens/animal were on earth to judge if humans were worthy of existence or not and when the boss alien contacted them he had decided after careful review the earth should be destroyed. The animals/aliens and the boy were very sad as they were very good friends by now...I think I shed a tear also!
It must have been a Jap import but my memory is being stretched to its limits. Anybody remember?

I'm older (dang it:( ) and I think the first animated character that I remember on TV was a flashy little charater named "Winky-Dink"..
he was sort of a quick flash/flying guy...
Viewer would order a clear TV screen...( a plastic sheet that was stuck to your TV screen)...and you could color and write on it with wax pencils at the same time they did on TV...
I would quess this was late 50's...
Y'all remember.... right after electricity was invented...
My most recent favorite characters are......THUNDER BIRDS ARE GO!!!!

How about Scott McCloud in "Space Angel"? On his ship "Starduster" with Taurus and some female type. Was the same sort of program like Clutch Cargo, not a cartoon, just pictures with moving mouths. Strange, but a good show.,
