View Full Version : swappable bolt-on performance parts?

I have been curious what kind of upgrade parts I can get that also fit mustangs, crown vics or other more common fords. I have only seen exhaust related swaps but not much under the hood. Am I not looking in the right places?
Is there anything like throttle body, manifold, tranny, radiator, waterpump, pulleys that is interchangeable that anyone knows of? Basically I am curious if I can find upgrades from other sites that may be applicable to our car.

Anything like control arms or sway bars or something. Of all the things I've seen mufflers, cobra exhaust, 4.10 gears, chrome door handles (cv part), that might match up on our cars.

Stuff that is almost as commonplace as being able to reclaim from a salvage yard, parts catalog, or something maybe a cobra owner might use as well.

I understand our engines are all modular but I didn't know how that applies to the whole picture.

I usually see threads that start 'will this work?' I was just wondering if someone knows ones that do work & their p/n's and what other cars they work in.
Thanks!

Apparently this is a bad question

underdrive pullies from a cobra pre '03, '99-'01 I think. dampner and water pump only, we have a one way alternator pulley.

I think I have seen some posts on this before. Are you saying our alternator pulley is different? I've been confused on that one.

Yes, leave the MM alt. pulley alone.

Unless you get a Trilogy, This kit comes with a different pulley.

Jawz, our alternator pulley is actually pretty cool from the factory. It has a clutch which disengages at WOT so that the alternator doesn't put any extra drag on the engine, so we get a little extra power at WOT. You don't want to replace that pulley and lose the disengagement feature.

Just adding the Mach I's use the same pullies.

All the internal parts of the engine can be swapped too, cams etc...

I think we'll find over time that some of the 05 Mustang stuff may swap too, suspention wise.I know we now share the same wheel off set.

The limo parts can help us with beefed up rears too,MMFF December issue has an article on the CVPI used in the One Lap of America and they are useing many Limo parts in the rear and Suspention including the BIG rear brakes.

Thanks for the input guys!
This is all interesting info.
I'm still thinking about it all and trying to figure out how much I'd be comfortable doing myself.
I've been approaching it, willing to do as much as I can. The little work I've done has been funner than anything. I'd rather learn about my car and mess with it over fixing computers at work any day.

I had heard a little about the alt pulley cutoff thing but didn't know much about it. Thanks for the clarif.

Cyclone, that's nice to hear about the '05 mustangs relationship to us. I look forward to people starting to talk about that on the forums. I'm hoping this thread will give others that visit an urge to experiment more.
My intentions of this thread was honestly to see if some day ford will have other vehicles, such as the mustang, have swappable bolt-ons. Since ours are rarer it's nice to think I'd be able to eventually pull something off a wrecked cobra and slap it in the MM (hopefully).

1) When you mentioned the Mach 1 pulleys... are you saying they use the same Steeda p/n as us, or are you saying we can use something that they can use as well? & what would that be?

2) I am also starting to think that if I did go w/ gears & Torque Converter I'd have to beef up the drive shaft or something. Did anyone else go to this conclusion or is it more realistic to only think about that upgrade only if you go S/C?

I'm planning on staying N/A and have fun w/ indiv. upgrades now & then.

Actually the one way clutch isn't what disengages the alt at WOT. The clutch allows the alternator to free-wheel on engine deceleration, supposedly reducing stresses on the belt. The disengagement at WOT is controlledby the PCM.

The Mach1/Cobra pulleys are worth about 10 rwhp. Just change the crank and water pump pulleys, leave the alt alone. Don't wanna reduce voltage any more than the crank pulley alone does since the MM has such a high electrical load.

Changing gears (and chip/programmer to compensate for speedo error) may introduce a vibration issue which can normally be corrected with a driveshaft upgrade.

There are numerous threads on both of these mods, along with many others.

Wasn't someone running a factory N/A cobra oval Single plate TB? What ever happened to that experiment?

Not sure about N/A. Marty has a single blade, but he's S/C. Required machining of upper intake manifold to remove divider between the two normal tb openings. I have a BBK twin 62, but even that needed mods to the upper intake to get maximum benefit since the openings in the manifold are smaller than 62 mm. Trilogy upper intake has an oval opening so the single blade is a bolt-on for them.
