I just thought I would share tonight's adventure. This is what the bottom of my K&N Filter Dry charger wrap looked like:

And this is what the rag looked like after I cleaned the throttle body:

The car is a daily driver, mostly to and from work and to and from Wisconsin, and in 15k miles this is the result. I may have let maintinence stretch a little too far, but at 15k miles I did NOT expect to see such a dirty sight. Needless to say I will now have to take my upper intake/throttle body off so I can throughly clean it. This "gunk" is like grease. This may look bad, but atleast I have a drycharger wrap - how about those folks just running the filter? If I were you, I would check the bottom of it because it could be due for cleaning. Only 15k miles and I had this thick black gunk coated in the throttle body :shake:

I run the stock Marauder paper filter. :P

K&Ns will let all that fine dust into your engine.

Rider,

The "Gunk" you see on the TB is from the crank case....and not abnormal!! :( Just clean your K & N and used carb cleaner to clean the TB and you will be OK!!

There will always be a buildup of black sooty stuff in the intake and TB (especially the back side) since EGR and Crank Case vent into the intake......My accelerator gets "Sticky" feeling and sometimes even jumps off idle...That's how I know when to clean 'er up?? Mine happens every 10K miles or so.

If you are worried....put the old air box back and see if it does it with a paper filter.....My bet is it will!! :o

Good Luck!!

I recently decided to open mine up as well. It's been 12k or more since its original install. I have the PHP, and the filter has a prefilter cover as well. It didn't look like that.

It was dirty at the bottom toward the rear, but that was it. What really surprised me was the amount of red oil still persperating from the filter onto the prefilter.

The chunk of dust bunny and other dry material you show, I had as well, but on top of the filter. Must the result of the full enclosure.

I bought a cleaning kit from Summit, followed the instructions, and off I go.

As a note: The PHP 's full cover likely protected me from crank oil residue. My main crank pully leaks ever so slightly as a result of my pully install two years back. I have to gunk clean the pully, sway bar, and a couple spots near it twice a year. Looks just like the black residue you show.

If K&N filters and oiled foam filters are so effective, Donaldson would not be making the new nano-fiber filters sold by Amsoil.

The way I see it, Ford didn't specify a new filter for the Marauder that costs 2-3 times as much as the standard Panther filter w/o a specific reason.

Which brings up this question:
Even though I am extremely careful not to over-oil my big conical K&N, I still would like a big, conical, quality paper filter (disposable) to try instead.
Are there such filters available that do a good job?
Has anyone actually tried them on a MM?

I would also like to add that the K&N cleaner kit is $8.99 at many parts stores.

Or,

...you could pay $15.99 shipped for another brand.

What is a good source for the dry charger or similiar filter "sock"? Depending on how dirty mine is when I check it this weekend, I might look in to one...

Eric, I ordered mine directly from K&N. Check out their website, it is on there.

Just so ya'll know, I didn't add any oil, but I may be looking into a different filter for when I put this back on.

The sock is useful in preventing large solid particles from clogging up the pleats, which can be hard to clean. It, however, does not have a fine enough screen to prevent small particles from passing through.

But a lot of people including Cobra's run CAI kits.

I've never heard of fine particles getting through. Pretty scary thought. Glad I bought the sock for mine.

Soooooooooo, is there a dry, non oiled conical filter which could be used in place of the K&N?
