Just recently the Marauder has exihibed a strange problem with the heat. As the days get cooler around here, I used the heat for the first time in....well....like over 2 years. I park the car during winter. I cannot even remember the last time I used the heat.

Here's the deal. The car has warmed up to operating temperature. The indicator needle is at the 20 mph mark. With temp at say 75, and the defroster/floor fan on, she blows only cold air. It's not until I moved the temp select to its max, 90 degrees, that warm air starts to flow. Then I have heat at any setting.

Twice in 3 days, starting the car bone cold, letting it warm to say half operating temperature, and driving off....I watched the temp needle rise above the 20mph mark and approach hotter than normal readings. I do nothing but continue to drive, (still no heat, at this point I am fussing with the temp selector and fan speed), within minutes of this high temp reading, it drops back down to normal operating temp on its own, and stays there for the duration of my drive.

I put a 180 stat in the car on Feb. 6th, 2003. My first mod with cooler plugs. Could this stat be causing my no heat, and occational overheat (but not boil over)?

Check and see if both hoses going into the car are hot, if they are its probably the blend air door motor, hopefully this is not the case.

Barry, that's exactly what mine was doing recently, the real hot, then cool down thing. I bled the system and added more coolant and it's worked fine. Don't know if this could be related to your heater problem.

As you might be aware of our MM have 2 possible kinds of coolant. Green or gold. If your car is green like mine, it should be flushed religiously every 3 years. This should prevent heater core problems. All of our cars should be at or beyond the 3 year mark now. Hope this helps.

As a follow up to rkk's post, the coolant that I just added was Prestone, and the label said "For Any Color Coolant." I hadn't seen that before.

BTW: I haven't had the coolant out in 7000 miles or more. I don't think it's a coolant problem.

I am off to track this morning. I will let it warm up in the driveway, and check the hoses Dennis suggested.
