Hopefully someone can offer a little guidance. Last night on my way home (9 miles) I started to hear a rattle coming from under the Merc. It sounded like a catalytic issue. A little later, my temperature guage suddenly pinned at the top of the Hot position. I pulled over and gave her ten minutes to cool. I checked the fluids and everthing was in normal ranges. I was only a mile from my house when I started loosing power and the she started lurching. I did manage to get her home, but I had her towed to the Mercury dealership this morning.

The only modification I have had done to her, is the addition of a K&N air filter kit (3 months ago) and a new stereo. I drive mostly highway miles here in LA. With our traffic, the opportunity to jump on her and play is limited.

Any suggestions for when I talk to the dealership?

Thanks.

Bring a jar of Vaseline. :D

You should have it handy when you post here too. Joseph Stalin isn't a very popular guy around here.

Sorry if you are offended. Joe Stalin was my nick name back in the Marine Corps. I served.

Any other information would be helpful. Like Miles, year, driving conditions, temperature, etc...

A SEVERELY plugged cat + excessive backpressure = the temperature spike & poor driveability ?????.

Hopefully that's all it is.

It is a 2003 with 26k miles. I do mostly highway miles, not to hard on her at all. I am in Southern Callifornia, so we the temp is fairly temperate. Thanks.

I tend to agree. A clogged cat could cause the symptoms discribed.
I have seen that before.

Good luck with your problem. I am curious about your USMC handle, "Joe Stalin." None of my business but sounds like an interesting story to this fellow Marine veteran. Want to share? Hope you recognized the humor in David's post. I am sure he knows that THE NAME David Morton is not that big a hit in Russia. He is with us tho.:) With the price of petroleum products being what they are a better alternative might be canola oil! Seriously good luck with the car and let us know what they say. With more information there is a lot professional background here to offer good advise. Dennis

Better blast the MAS air metter with some contact cleaner and install a stock air filter before you take it in.

I'm not saying that will cause the problem, or fix it, but the dealer will try to blame the filter in a heartbeat.
