Marty, I cant understand why you have converted to a F.A.S.T. system to manage you engine electronics.
Please explain.

My car was in the left lane.

Quickest:

11/5/05: 60': 1.665 E/T: 11.088 Trap Speed: 124.51 mph

Fastest:

11/5/05: 60': 1.754 E/T: 11.268 Trap Speed: 125.82 mph

I am by no means a expert at drag racing as I haven't been to a track in years...but I have to know the science...if you sped down the track at a faster mph, wouldn't that mean you did it quicker? How can the quickest ET not also reflect the fastest MPH?

You went faster but it took you longer to do it? My peabrain is telling me slower=longer

Marty,
Smoking run. That is a phenomenal time for such a large piece of iron with a 'smallish' powerplant. In fact, given all the variables, that is incredible! Good thing you had witnesses (He,he). Charlie's been ragin' on another site as well. Maybe PMS? Could be time for a vacation . . .:alone:

The rate of acceleration is not the same throughout the whole run. It all depends on the power band. Here's an example:

Consider a hopped-up 1977 Trans Am with a 455-punched-out-to-462 and some basic go-fast stuff (high stall converter, 4.10s, holley carb, etc.). His run was in the high high 12s at 107.something. He roared off the line to a 60' time of 1.6something. Obviously, the rate of acceleration slowed at some point, because nearly 13 seconds later, he had covered 1320 feet and managed to accelerate to 107.something mph.

Consider a 1998 Ram Air Trans Am, bone stock: 13.4 seconds to cover the same 1320, and after those 13.4 seconds, the car was running at 107.6 mph. The first 60' took 2.3 seconds to cover. Obviously this driver was not intent on abusing his car off the launch :P but the fact remains that if both cars had launched simultaneously, there would be a .6 second difference in the time they both took to get to the 60' mark.

However, both managed the same speed by the time they reached the end of the 1320 feet distance.

The old Pontiac blocks are known for massive low end and early mid-range torque (much like the old Buicks, although the old Buicks take the crown in ultra low end torque). So most of the 77's contribution to getting across the 1320 feet in under 13 seconds came early in the run. The car is a 3 speed automatic, and if I remember correctly it crosses the traps at close to 5500 RPM in 3rd. The old Pontiacs don't make much power above 5000 RPM (lots of internal friction due to the huge crankshaft mains, as well as the bore/stroke relationship). So you can imagine that the old car leapt off the line and quickly got up to a certain speed, thereby crossing a large amount of distance in a short time, but then the remaining part of the 1320 feet the car ceased to accelerate as hard as in the lower RPM range.

In an extreme extreme extreme case, you could theoretically have a monster engine that will (if given enough traction) launch the car to 100 mph in no time, but then flatten off because the engine is out of its power range. But the fact it was already above 100 mph for so much of those 1320 feet results in a low ET. Similarly, you could have a car launching softer off the line, taking longer to execute those first 60', but then as the engine began breathing it would make all sorts of power, propelling it to a higher-than-100mph (using my example) speed and then 'hunting down' the other car that has already "plateau'ed". If there wasn't enough time to hunt down the other car, the winner could cross the finish line first at a lower speed, and then the other car crosses the finish line sometime after, but travelling at a much much higher speed.

Funny enough: I was going to use the 455 SD as an example since I recall having seen magazine road tests where that car pulled 13.4 second 1/4 mile times at something like 102 mph. That would have made a nice contrast to my WS6 at 13.4 seconds and 107.6 mph. However, my post was long enough, and I question the validity of comparing magazine results with real world numbers, as we've all come to realize on our own.

Congrats on the results, by the way. I just realized you and I share similar crowns: I think I still own the quickest reported factory stock Marauder and you own the quickest Marauder PERIOD.
(ironically, you probably spent a great deal of money getting your car to be the quickest one on the road, and I've spent a great deal of money just trying to keep my car on the road. :baaa: )
