What does your significant other think of your Marauder?
I'm not exactly sure how my wife feels. Whenever we are out and someone makes a comment, she:rolleyes: says it's my new toy or my "cop car". We've had alot of car over the years (from vettes to fullsize german excess), but I've never had the volume of positive comments from total strangers. She thought I was nuts when I first bought the car and since I had bought a Harley the previous year chalked it up to a "mid-life phase". I got the feeling from her that this was a male thing and she would have never bought the car had it been her decision.
This brings me to my next question. What percentage of Marauder owners are women? I was over at the IMMC site and only two women were listed in the registry.
http://www.mercurymarauder.org/cgi-bin/immc-register.cgi?mode=list&list_year=2003
These questions all came about because of a very strang occurance this Sunday morning. I'm sitting in my home office this morning finishing up some paperwork. My wife comes in and asks for the keys to the Marauder to run to the grocery store. She said I had her blocked in and she didn't want to jockey the cars around. I said sure and handed them over----and she gave me back a strange smile. She backs down the driveway and must have known or sensed I was watching her. I saw her looking up at me through the tinted windows smiling as she stood on the gas and ----- SMOKED THE TIRES. She has ------NEVER------done that before and is always giving me grief for firing up the Harley on a Sunday morning.
I wonder what brought on that bit of testosterone charged emotion? I was pretty funny though.

Hmmm. My wife and I are both cops, and she thinks I'm an idiot about this car. She could not understand why I'd want to spend any more of my day in what she thinks is a glorified Crown Vic. She's bigger than I am so there's not a thing I can do about it even though I outrank her. It's complicated.
This car is a lot like some other stuff I've owned over the years: My wife doesn't get it and doesn't understand why it's cool, but at least she accepts the fact that other people think it's cool and can see than I'm not unique in my opinion of the automotive world. I get a lot of positive comments about this car, and it's rare enough to have a little mystique about it. She just doesn't see why though.

My wife drives the car once in a while and likes it, but she prefers her smaller Honda Prelude. - Just fine with me.
The one complain she has, is that in the winter the leather seats are cold. When I purchased mine, the heated seats weren't available.

I'm sure that the demographics are very similar to that of the Impala SS's.
On a forum numbering 5000+, we have 4 or 5 women. At least one of whom, is considered to be a possible "troll."
For the most part, it is a "Man Thing."

What's a wife? My MM did not come with one and personally I was "decontented" of that feature back in '98.
My wife HATES the Marauder.
REFUSES to ride in it. (Although she has 3 times in 8 months, begrudgingly) She ESPECIALLY hates the Ruby Red Bob Whites.
Wanted me to get a 7-series BMW when I brought the Marauder home. She did not know that I'd been on a wait-list for a year and a half for it. 15 years of marriage. She is in a brand new Suburban (amazing how you need 6,000 lbs of car to carry 200lbs of female between her and my two girls aged 10 & 8)
I'm the only one in the house with a job...it's MY car!

Wife likes the car.. and is tickled at the fact that no one would pass her on North Ave. [they must of thought she was the law]
She was the one who encoraged me to buy it in the first place.
She doesn't ask me if she can drive it ...she knows how I am .. but she's no stranger to standing on that right pedal either.

My girlfriend loves the car, even though I still havent gotten mine. (THIS WEEKEND ITS MINE!) She was a big fan of the LT1 SS, and she loves the large back seat:D In fact, she's the one who keeps on telling me I would'nt be comfortable in a 2003 Cobra..."Get the MM" lol

My wife loves this car. Of course truth be told my wife drives better than most men. Her first car was a 74 grand prix with a 454 in it' so ponies and rear wheel drive don't faze her. She can't understand why anyone would be intimidated into not driving one of em. When we were lookin to replace the family ride we looked at the windstar and the Marauder. Believe it or not she wanted me to get the MM. Oh, and by the way she breaks the tires loose all the time. It's easy if ya know what your doin. ; )

My girlfriend hates the car.. She says it looks like a pimp daddy car. I also got a 03 SVT Mustang. She hates them both.. but when U need that once a month need for shear blinding speed.. there is nothing like the Cobra and the blower. The MM is the daily driver. But I have just one requirement for a car. IT HAS TO GO FASTER THAN A POLICE CAR!! As Scottie said: "Its a matter of pride" My girlfriend wants me to get a MiniCooper and after test driving one, the S model does handle like a sled on rails but is a bit lacking in the power plant department.

My wife liked it on the test drive.
Her thoughts from that day in Chrono order: - Nice blacked out paint scheme, - cool wheels (personally I don't go for chrome), - good looking interior (must be the nudo leather), - great sound system (1st one she's had that stacked up against the "Mach 1" system in her former '94 GT 5 speed convertible), - nice rumble at idle, - Hey, great pickup when you nail it going 25 mph and it kicks down in to 1st!, -wow same sensation when you nail it going 70 and it kicks down to 2nd and stays there till you hit 90! , -what do you mean they are not making them with a sunroof?, - can we add one? - OK
Now that everyone at work has hassled her either for driving "an old man's car" or a "cop car" I still remember all her initial responses but her ... not so much. Bear in mind that she was driving a red corvette before getting the old man's cop car (before that it was a '95 M3 and before that the Mustang with lots of go faster goodies including an exhaust note that set off car alarms in the parking garage). I keep telling her that if they give her S**T she should put them in the passenger seat and show them that this is not their father's Mercury .... but she won't go there.
Sigh.
At least I can come here and find relief.
She told me earlier today that this website was bad for our marriage.

My wife was extremely unhappy with me when I bought mine. We did not need a car at all and I had told her before I heard of a Marauder that I loved my Cougar and intended to bank the amount that I had been paying for it into investments when it was paid off. The Cougar was only paid off for a matter of months when I heard about the Marauder. When I bought the Marauder in July the icicles where so thick in my home there could have been a glacier right here in Southern California. And then she REALLY flipped when I said I wasn't going to sell the Cougar either!
She has thawed considerably since then, and jokes about all the stares and looks the car gets when we are on the road. She asks me if they are checking her out, or the car? She is quite attractive so it could be either...or both. Hell...who are we kidding, we know it's the car they are looking at!
She only just drove the Marauder for the first time this morning. Moved it out of the driveway so she could wash her Sable.
I was wondering if I should ever let her read some of the posts here about the Sable so she would know just how bad*ss of a ride she has!

We had been looking for a new car for over a year when we heard about the MM. We went to the dealership 'just to look'. Took it out and when he planted me in the seat..........what a rush!!!!!! He didn't even have to ask. I sat down with the salesman and we paid full price. Got it home and I still fight with him as to who gets to drive it each day. I usually let him, but sometimes I steal it. I love it even more since we put in our chip, pulleys and gears!!! I love all the power!!! And the stares!

My wife thought I was crazy at first. She couldn't understand why I didn't buy a Cobra or TBird.
I'm the only one with a job in our household and she's happy to leave all the money stuff (including car payments) to me.
Besides; this was my first NEW car in 17 years! She's had 4 or 5 in that time.
She enjoys driving it now. And though she won't admit it, I think she likes the attention, too.

My significant other never saw the car till I brought it home. I was in the process of having Ford buy back my 2002 Explorer. I was considering a 2003 Cobra. But I decided to go with the Marauder mainly because of the auto trans. She likes the car and managed to spin it around in the rain once. The MM demands respect. Overall, she's a little jealous over the attention I give it. I guess she'll just never understand. Well, what can you expect from someone who drives a 2001 Taurus.

Mrs. C loves the car. Loves me more, encouraged me to buy it at my first opportunity. She hasn't driven it yet although the offer is there. Let my brothers drive it once each when I first got it, that one upmanship thing. My father, ex stock car driver can hardly wait for his turn. It'll be special cause I'm trying to hold him off till chip installation etc.

Hello Everyone,
I haven't written since I got delivery of my Marauder on July 3, 2002 as I have been in FL without it - missing it!
I bought mine as a replacement for my '67 Chevelle, 327hp, 4 speed Hurst shift, that I could get 3rd gear rubber from! I LOVE my Marauder and the looks it gets from everyone - even the cops in town are jealous. I have not seen another one since I bought mine. It is not just a GUY car.
Hope to hear from more women owners!

Wife never saw the car up close and personal until I brought it home. Of course she had seen pictures on the web, the broucher, and a few spots on the tube back in September/October when LM did show a few advertising spots. She's driven it secveral times, like it, and likes the ride on long trips. Of course, she like sthe fact it's an automatic, she drove my '99 Cobra, but didn't like to shift. Just the other day I was harping on the waterfall on the steerign wheel, and she burst out laughing! I asked her what was so funny, and she said "YOU!" I had that unknowning look on my face and she said, "you're like a kid in a candy store, too many toys, so little time!" How true, how true!

The Marauder is MY WIFE'S daily driver. I get to drive it once a month (to my car club meetings), to service appointments (the dealer is on my way to work), on weekends (sometimes), and when we go out at night (she has poor night vision). She picked the color (blue pearl with light flint interior). She lets me clean it any time I want too, though!

The wife liked the old (pre-2003) Town Car's looks. I didn't. At the same time, I was secretly yearning for a big car once again (like my old '85 Parisienne).
After driving a Lincoln LS, I started pestering her about it. She stuck with the Town Car. I rented one in San Diego after realizing I liked the 2003 TC styling much better. However, I HATED the ride and (lack of) power.
So at the 2003 Montreal Auto Show in the fall of 2002, I spotted a Marauder and went gaga. She doesn't even remember it.
After going for a test drive in Feb (as a passenger), she was sufficiently impressed with the comfort that she began to encourage the purchase. As you all know, it was a long and arduous journey but we ended up with one last week. She loves it.

I think it's interesting that this thread has prompted so many replies (my own included)! My girlfriend (who doesn't drive and can't tell a Camaro from a Mustang) really likes the car's looks. She also seems happy that I'm so happy about a car.
What's funny, is that both my mom (who drives a black Lexus SC400) and my dad (who had a Plymouth GTX 440 hemi when I was little, but now drives a silver Chevy Astro van) BOTH want one too, now.
The car seems to impress both sexes at the gas station, parking lot, etc. You just gotta love a car that you just NEVER see ANYWHERE on the road! (Okay, I saw ONE, but L.A. is a pretty big car town).

By now, you know I'm a female, and the MM is my daily driver. My husband raved about it before I saw it but once I drove it, I had to have it. My 17-year old daughter hates it, but my 10-year old son loves to have me race the ricers at the light. My daughter hates to be slammed back into her seat, but my son eggs me on.
My husband rarely drives it, although he loves it too. When he wants his thrills, he unwraps his '68 500KR. Now THAT's a car I'm afraid to drive, and not just for the mean speed... one little "oops" in that and I'm history, for sure.

Sounds like the situation with my '87 GTA. While I love all my T/As, there will always be a special place in my heart for that '87, which has been with me through the best and worst times of my life.
My wife is learning to drive, and it was too funny watching (experiencing!) her try to launch the GTA smoothly. There seems to be some sort of accelerator "translator" module in that car: you press the pedal to tell the car to "go" and by the time the order gets to the motor, it's sounds more like "go right f***ing NOW!!".

It's a fun car, the '87. While the '98 WS6 totally demolishes my '87 brute-power-wise (and the '78 is not even in the game!), I really enjoy the effortless torque that the Tuned Port Injection engine puts out. I really get a kick out of climbing inclined streets at 38-40 mph with the tranny already upshifted to 4th gear (OD) and the TCC locked up. That means the engine is grunting at barely 1000 RPM and I barely have to apply any sort of throttle opening. It's an engine that really enjoys being behind an automatic, taking advantage of a tight converter (~1600 RPM for economy reasons) and a slightly aggressive 3.23:1 diff gear ratio. With a 3.06 first gear ratio, it's no wonder my wife has trouble feathering the launches.
It is, hands down, my favorite cruiser. Low low low seating position, effortless low end, nice subsonic deep rumble from the exhaust at low RPM... all the elements of a relaxing sensory overload while gently cruising around the neighborhood. And it's still 100% bone stock to boot!
http://firebird.freeservers.com/gta/lb9-left1.JPG
I sometimes wish Ford would have included some long-tubed tuned intake runners on their 4.6 to boost low end somewhat, but then again the added length would have restricted top end performance. It's a trade-off... in our case the looser torque converter and 3.55 gears will help get the engine up into the power band quicker anyway.

I love this car but when I traded my 2000 Lincoln LS in on my 2003 MM my wife made sure to inform me many times she HATED the car it's looks and price.
She even went to the L/M dealer and gave them hell for selling me this ugly car without her permission.
For months she continually asked me why I bought this ugly dumb MM and it was only one of those mid-life crisis things that would soon pass.
Bought the MM in mid December 2002 and it is still icy around here.
However daily I still get alot of people who walk up to me wanting to see and talk about this car thats great!

Wife wanted on so the Black was born. She loved the way I drifted it around a turn with the salesman in the back seat. She loved it but was used to my 71 Chevelle, 427. She drove it for 3 years and wanted a Towncar. She got the towncar and I got the Marauder. When I am out of town and come home for some reason the Black needed new tires??????? For some reason there is burn out marks in the front of my house.
She is the one that told me to get one of each color. She loves the 410 gears an says she don't drive them but I see them moved around all the time. I wonder who moves them. She says the dog. Iguess it is better than the turtle driving it.
She has not driven the Red yet, but loves the Blue.
Grandson wants the Black when he drives. That is 9 years from now.
She wants one to drag race. What a worderful wife. Tomorrow will be 38 years together.

I had never owned a vehicle this large...ever...from high school through college and med and grad schools...working life...now semi-retired. GTOs, Vettes, Trans Ams, Camaros, Ford Lightning...all much smaller.
But...I do like the way the MM rides and drives and I am working to upgrade and/or improve on what the factory did as time allows...as well as add items to 'personalize' my MM...and I must say that I really enjoy stopping at the local grocery or post office or gas station and having people come over to ask about the car. A lot of folks hereabouts have never even heard of one.
My wife likes the car ok but says it is REALLY big...then she goes over to her Toyota Solara SLE convertible...gets in...and heads out.
I think she likes it better...fine with me.

My ol lady knows whats up, maybe because all I do is tell her why its so cool! She doesn't care to drive it. But whats cool is, if its raining, she says.. "its raining so we're taking my car right?" =D

This S.O. thinks it's kicka$$! The Marauder is MY daily ride. I love the attention it gets and guys at the gas pumps are floored that I know so much about the car. There may be more of the female persuasion here than you know. ;)

Okay, okay, maybe Black Rules, but I LOVE my DTR!!!
Here's my story in 2003--Fordfrk hemmed and hawed--should we buy this (Silver Birch) Marauder--I said "GO FOR IT"; then he SC'd it--just great!!!!. Then there are a few other 2-Marauder families here and I said I want my own Marauder--so last August I gots my own DTR---Enjoying every day with these 2 great cars:banana::banana:

Perhaps I have been too anal about my car for the last eight years? My wife is scared to take it out. I remind her that its very much replaceable, but she knows another one would never truly replace it. Maybe she thinks I'm talking about the car?

My fiance loves riding shotgun or driving it on backroads- especially after I had the gear swap done, but she's absolutely terrified of driving it in town or on the interstate because it's too big (TWSS). She has an '03 Corolla.

Cool 9+ year thread revival! Pat has always been supportive in all my automotive indulgences. She would prefer not to drive my car for errands as she is not comfortable with the possibility of door dings, or worse. But she appreciates it when we travel in it for certain. Best way to travel by land inmy opinion.

I met my GF at a house party. A top 10 best moments of my life....
We were just talking to each other and I told her I liked cars and working on them and such. She asked what I drive(usually a good sign) and I told her a Mercury Marauder. As I went to explain further(as we usually have to) she stopped me and said "So you drive the 2nd sexiest sedan ever made?"
My response was "So that is your murdered out 96SS I parked behind isn't it". The grin on her face told me shes a keeper
30 or so minutes of gawking at each others cars and talking bout how awesome they and we left the party
So as long as I don't force her to admit the MM is better than the Impy and vice-versa the relationship works

Bought an 03 new. Wife had an '87 Monte Carlo SS that she loved because it was fast and handled well. Had her drive mine on the trip to Dallas for MMVI and soon afterward the SS went up for sale and another 03 was found.
How does she like it? it has 197,000 miles on it to my 93,000....Not to mention since it looks like a police car the traffic moves out of the way when she comes up behind them at Mach speeds....LOL
