In simple quick terms, the unwanted ignition of your fuel charge, sooner than is desired. This premature combustion tries to force down your piston while it is on the way up. Causes, in brief, hot spots on your piston (read that carbon build up), poor timing (spark goes off too soon), too low octane gasoline (tends to light quicker under pressure). Damage, worst case you can pulverize your engine's internals. I'm sure more will respond.

Pulverize is a understatement if you are using a S/C or Turbo charging the engine. I have witnessed a Twin Turbo 5.0L Detonate and blow the head clean off the engine. Im sure we have all seen top fuel when one of them detonate and the giant fireball and Flying Pieces Parts appear.

So, Mark, do these questions have anything to do with you low MPH on your time slips? Is the car still running OK?
