A year ago I installed my 180* thermostat and found the Yellow antifreeze for our cars at AutoZone....Xerex G-05. They no longer carry it and suggested Prestone extended life...which they also say is compatible with all other types and brands??
True or not true??:(

Go get the good stuff at a FLM parts counter.

Is buying anit-freeze from the dealer like buying oil from the dealer? Overpriced!? Not to start another debate war, but whats the difference?

The dealer will have the right type, green or yellow, and it cost $15 for a jug when I did my annual drain and fill IIRC.
Overpriced? In the bigger scheme of things I don't think so. Just another one of those little details I guess I'm retentive about. Kinda like not paying attention that the BP/Amoco I frequent is usually a nickel higher per gallon for premium than the convenience store across the street.

I too am curious what the difference would be with a brand bought at Autozone?

I have the red antifreeze in the S/Cers intercooler. That is what the Mustang shop used in the Cobras there.
Is there a difference?

Now granted I am just a "lowly" Crown Vic owner, but I am constantly amazed how penny pinching some people are when it comes to the maintenance on their cars. I mean really, how often do you change the anti-freeze? How often do you replace the plugs, fuel filter, brake pads, etc. Is 1,2 or even 5 dollars a part difference going to make that big an impact on your financial well being? I never have understood people trying to pinch pennies when they are talking about maintenance on a 20-30 thousand dollar investment. Just put in what the factory calls for and you take all the worry out of the equation. Sorry for the soap box, I am off it now. :)

Autozone is about 1.5 miles away, the dealer is much further. If I'm going to get the same stuff at Autozone, I'd rather go there. Sounds like the easiest way?

The dealer may not even carry a Ford coolant. I was at a dealer and saw that they carried an off brand windshield washer fluid. I made a crack about not carrying the Ford brand and they said that's all they carry. Dealers may only use what is cheapest themselves. For warranty work, Ford will pay them $X for Ford fluid. But, if the dealer could find equivalent fluid for less, that puts extra money in their pocket.

True...the mazda 6 also uses 5w-20 and dealerships use the bulk 10W-30 for oil changes cause it's "Cheaper"

I needed some coolant to make up for the AIR POCKETS
that never seem to disappear....
I went into my local department store and picked up a gallon
of Prestone Extended Life Antifreeze in the silver/grey colored bottle.
It says GM DEX-COOL Approved.
On the back of the bottle it says...
Meets GM 6277M, Ford WSS-M97B44-D,
and property and performance specification requirements
of DaimlerChrysler MS-7170, MS-9769
So I figured its gotta be compatible...
One quart later, the air pockets are gone and the temp meter
is back where it belongs...

Problem Solved!!!
The dealer I bought my car from (45 miles away) gives a bit of a discount and I got the GOOD STUFF for $10.00 a gallon!!!:banana2: I had ordered some other part so the trip was not only fun but worthwhile.
My local dealer (aka: "Stealer") gets $22.50 a gallon....GO FIGURE!!!
