OK, so my wife is on the way home from a nearby town (about 15-20 miles away) where she had taken our cat to the vet. She runs over a portion of metal road sign that is basically flat against the highway and invisible, and gets a flat.

She calls me and I tell her we have roadside assistance thru Progressive. Call them and they will take care of it. No problem.

Our policy is set to expire today. I check our bank records online and see that automatic payment in full has left our bank account this morning, so that is not a problem, either.

So she gets on the phone with them. They cannot find our policy by number (she is reading the new card to them) or by name (we ain't Smiths, it's a distinctive one) and tell us they don't have the payment so we are not insured. Furthermore, even IF we were, this is technically a collision and is not covered by roadside assistance. We would have to file a collision claim and find our own tow.

So now she is on the highway in the dark with no insurance. No, not scary at all.

I am home with a sleeping toddler, so I call my stepdad who is only 5 minutes from the scene. He was an auto shop teacher and has all the necessary items we need - he's also happy to help.

Our toddler awakens to her father yelling at a succession of four Progressive reps over the phone. The selling point was "if she had run over a nail, would you be denying her service? Then what's the difference?"

Daddy rocks little girl to sleep and tells her a story of the evil Progressive witches.

15 minutes later my wife has a tow, stepdad, and sheriff's deputy to help her. I have several apologies.

What's the point of roadside assistance if they are going to try to deny help to their customers?

Tomorrow I call State Farm.

Really? We had them and they got real 'spensive - like over $125 so I cancelled them in favor of $14 every 6 months.

Well, I got what I paid for. B|tches.

I'm sorry you had trouble with Progressive, but I'm glad your wife got the help she needed.

I'm with Hitch on the AAA thing-I have it and love it.

For what it's worth, amongst us insurance agency owners, Progressive is a joke...

Don't bother with them either.
They are only good until you place your first claim.
then they send you a letter in the mail telling you, that since you had a claim
in the last 5 years, we will NOT be renewing your policy.

Just try to get another insurance company to pick you up after that.

Ditto on this one here as well.

I have Progressive...they're great for everything else. In fact, I just got in an accident yesterday (not my fault) and they handled everything promptly. Quite surprising actually. Being in Cleveland, and working on the east side of Cleveland, I drive by some of the main offices of Progressive. They are massive complexes, enormous buildings, expansive parking lots, etc. I'd bet a dollar to a donut, that those witches are all tired, underpaid, cubicle people who answer the phone. I bet your particular "situation" wasn't in one of their "drop down" boxes on their electronic claimes form. You know how those people are with rules. They're robots. If the customer doesn't specifically say "this" then he can't get service. Thats what I think anyway.

I have AAA for all of my, and my wifes roadside problems. If you get AAA get the platinum membership or whatever it is. It's $100 bucks a year, and definitely worth it. But, don't sign up for the $100 bucks a year platinum deal on the exact day of your accident, incident...because they'll tell you it takes 24-48 hours before it goes into effect...but they're happy to take your money right on the spot! Anyway...thats another story. The platinum deal allows you to get FREE towing for a distance up to 100 miles, and a bunch of other stuff. Since we got it, we've used it twice. Each time was hassle free, and each time, if you were to add the miles up from the tows, and the money it would have cost, they would have been well over $100 bucks.

I like state farm! I got a letter from them guaranteeing coverage for LIFE from them regardless of claims. Guess I'm just that good of a customer and driver.

My Ex, on the other hand, totalled a lot of cars! (haha!)

Go with the Farm.

I have all my insurance with the "Farm". Auto, home & umbrella. Have never had any problems getting anything covered. When my MM was hit by a flying 5 gallon plastic bucket.... they paid for all the repairs and even reimbursed me for what I paid for the clear bra on the MM... the entire cost! When we had some fireplace spark damage to the carpet in the family room they paid to replace the carpet in the family room and living room since it was the same carpet and there is a doorway in between.....

I'm with Tallboy here, I've had AAA for...well, uh, 20 years now. They have always been solid. Always. Its cheap and universal.

As far as car insurance, Allstate, yeah I know, but they have the best rate for me currently, and you know all these Internet Insurance agencies dont really save you all that much. Especially when you consider they have no agent comissions to pay, very little if any brick and mortar expenses. Also an agent would never let the company get away with what happened here.

just my two cents worth

For my 2 cents worth I'm with the triple A guys. $79.00 a year, road side service 24hrs. Free tows up to 75 miles, tour books, maps, trip tics, travel and hotel discounts, etc. I don't know how to beat it. Oh ya, for doodoos like me, free lock out service and free gas rescue. Hard to beat. We have used them several times and they still want our business.

I was a very happy allstate customer until one day i get a nice letter in the mail from them. The nice letter said my motorcycle policy was reviewed and was more than doubling. It seems allstate wanted to get out of the motorcycle insurance game, so they just doubled or tripled their premimums on m/c policys. So, now i am with progressive but am thinking of moving all of stuff under AAA insurance.

So far no one has quoted me a price within $500 / year of what I pay with Progressive.

they must be able to do it so cheap by screwing everyone out of services they supposedly "offer."

Not for me, Nationwide was by far the cheapest and I am still a client besides my not so clean driving record.

As I stated, Allstate has the best rates for me, right now. I've been screwed by them all, Progressive included, by sudden rate hikes. I have a clean record, yes it amazes me too, the vehicles are garaged ina single family home, low crime area. So you figure why the rates jumped. Nothing changed

Anyway as I also stated I beleive the agent makes the difference. I dont go through a prompt or a script when I call, no automated this that, a real person.

best way to get quality, low cost auto insurance is to contact a trusted, or, if you don't know who to trust, contact a number of independent insurance agents. Have them run the competetive quotes and make sure you understand the Insurance Company Ratings. Stick with A+ or better (AA or AAA) firms. You may not know all of the names but the ones you have all mentioned advertise heavily. Someone has to pay for that advertising.

I have coverage from Encompass/CNA and I had a total loss in 2003 from an uninsured driver (his fault, my car was parked). They paid in about a week so no claims issues. I'm still on their best rate plan in TX. Three cars, full coverage, less than $1500 a year. I'm in suburban Houston (outside Harris County) and Texas is known for high cost auto insurance. I think that is very good all things considered.

I have never had a problem with a claim with Progressive. They settle quick. I too have the AAA platinum road service. By having this AAA card it also gives me discounts to many other things. I Had AAA as my carrier before but they got too expensive and at the time "Redlined" their customers meaning you paid more if you lived in other areas. I don't have to worry about this now living where I live but at time I did. I am very happy with Progressive.

I've been with State Farm for over 20 years, and I am very pleased with their service. I've had one car stolen, stripped and totaled, and what was in the trunk was worth more than the car itself. They paid both claims without an increase. I also had a car totaled in a parked hit and run collision, no raise in rates.

When I bought the Kenny Brown #1x, I sat down with my agent and showed him everything about the car, including the two magazine articles, and it's supercharged state and MSRP. He sent that to the underwriters and they issued two policies. One full coverage for a basic Gran Marquis (this was before the Marauder was in nationwide databases) and another for my mods. All I'll need to do if I need to make a claim, is provide the sales reciepts for 100 percent replacement value. All of this, plus a liability only policy on my '91 GM, under 800 bucks a year, including road service. State Farm will have to fire me as a customer before I make any changes.
