On October 21st, I had the pleasure of permanently removing someone's mailbox from the side of the road with ol' Blue (to the tune of about $5000). I immediately dropped her off at the local dealership to get repaired... Out of site, out of mind?
I got her back yesterday.. and I have to be honest... the hood, front bumper and grill look better than ever! Also, the guy that did the alignment did an awesome job. She handles better than ever.
It's the first time that I've had to file a claim against my auto insurance for which I was "at fault" (if you count Hydroplaning across 3 lanes of traffic into someone's mailbox "at fault"). I'm hoping that it doesn't raise my rates. My other fear is that the insurance company will drop me altogether now that the adjuster has seen under my hood!
Driving her again after a month just wasn't the same. I know that I'm going to be skittish in the rain. Someone needs to talk me out of selling her before I do something stupid :P
Anywho.... Does this count as a "kill"?

Seeing as this cost you $5000 (ouch) plus replacing the mailbox, I would say you lost.

It is a kill for the mailbox. JMHO, better luck next time.

Was it a Honda mailbox? (some of the old-timers here will know what I am referring to)

Nathan, you did $5000 worth of damage just running down a MAILBOX? Wow......
And yes, your rates will skyrocket...insurance companies will take your money for 20 years, then screw you on your very first claim. Thank God my only claim was 100% the other person's fault...

They had it mounted on a sawed off telephone pole that was driven into the ground a couple feet? The only thing I had going for me is that with the torential downpours the ground had softened enough to allow the impact to plow it out (instead of breaking it off?).

Aw man! Just my luck.

Thankfully, I was only out of pocket for the deductible. The Mailbox did valiantly give its life... and the Marauder is looking better than ever :)

Looking at your signature mods you list your 305's---IMOP, they should be for the track --thats why I took mine off and put on all seasonal 295's---and keep the 305's for track use--since the 305's are softer and more likey to slid/loose traction in water vs the 295--not saying this added to your delima, but something to think about---Tom
PS--.and congrats for getting your baby back--it is fun ---to get her back --I know.....

I've had problems with the Nittos giving a little under medium throttle in the rain, but only enough to cause me to let off the throttle. I always put the stock tires back on before the first snow. I rarely use the Marauder to commute, but the combination of cold and rain on the morning in question prompted me to forgo the motorcycle for the car. The same combination of cold and rain proved to be a bad combination for the drag radials. Woops! I have no doubt that I would have been fine with the stock tires.

Thanks :)

I doubt the adjuster's gonna know the difference between an S/C Marauder and one that's not. They aren't car guys y'know, they're business majors with master's degrees in inspecting Toyota toasters, and looking up estimates in rate books. They can spot a Ricer with a fart can from a mile away, but a blue Grand Marquis with a Trilogy on the intake?
As far as rates going up, that's a tough call, and depends upon your driving record, I'd think. Were you charged in the accident, and do you have a bunch of moving violations? You said it's your first claim, and $5K ain't a large claim, these days. You may get lucky, just don't hit anything else.
As far as getting rid of the car, why? It wasn't the car's fault you hit the mailbox, and think about this: you hit something that solid, and that big 'ol tank kept you from getting hurt. :twocents:

Tread depth on the drag radial is 5/32 when brand new, therefore, there's no place for standing water to go when you run through it, and you hydroplane. An even better reason not to use drag radials on the street everyday, is that you're wasting your money. They function best when hot, and who gets to do a burnout at a stoplight?
Gal you're okay Nathan, and Ole Blue is home from the hospital.
I wouldn't have posted that. Some bleeding heart tree-hugging hippy liberal will have you branded a 'Mailbox Hater', and try to take away your 'weapon of anti-mailbox aggression' and sell it to divvy up the money between all the less fortunate mailboxes in the area. I've seen it happen man, it's ugly. :censor:

He actually knew what a Marauder was. He was suprised to know that they made them in Blue. He also made some comments about the blower. I'm guessing he wasn't your average claims adjuster.

Nathan,
I wouldn't worry too much if you have been with your insurance co. for years and this is your first chargeable accident. Providing you have a good driving record, and are in good standing...
Just my .02 as the insurance co. I am with will allow a 'freebie' at fault, once in a great while, without a spike in premiums.
Then again, every insurance co. varies a bit.
Wishing you the best,
Mike.

You mean I'm -not- supposed to do that?!?
Nathan, keep us posted on the insurance ding and glad your car is back on the road.
Cheers!

I knock down one of those things about once a week. In the mailcar though, not the marauder. Damn things keep getting in the way!
