Today after my trip to the drag strip, I came home to pick up my Son "CJ" and had to run a few errands. We jump into the MM and off we go. I love his questions.. like:

"Daddy, who put those numbers on your car?"

"Why is the helmet so heavy?" (I keep my helmet in the back seat)

The sound of the Trilogy with Kooks & Company reporting for duty and screaming Nittos grasping the tarmac along with associated G-forces always brings a "Yahooooo" from him.

When we got home I backed the MM in the driveway, opened the the garage door and saw a box of x-mas lights and assorted decorations smack dab in the middle of the garage. I got out to move the junk from the Marauders path. While doing so, I heard "VAAAAARRROOOMMM" !!! I rushed back to see my Son sitting there in the drivers seat, hands at 3 and 9 o'clock, and trip toes bearly reaching the peddles, and best of all, a "bird fed cat" grin (:o ).

Me - "Hey! What are you doing?"
CJ- "I'm driving":D
Me- "Ma'boy, I dont think so" :nono:

Then it dawned on me. My boy did his first solo V8 engine rev up. And I could tell he liked it. I have a feeling the next question from him will be "Daddy can I rev it up again?"

Good thing he didn't put it into reverse and do that!

I made the mistake of leaving the daughter in the
car running..She climbed across the front seats
and knocked it into reverse. It rolled down the driveway
across the street into the neighbours porch..I had managed
to hang onto the drivers door and apply the brake saving any
significant damage...I would have appreciated the shifter
lockout..and I don't leave children in a running car anymore..

Yer right yer right. Lil bugger was still in the back seat when I got out.

I dont think he'd be able to shift it now even if I gave him instructions on how to do it.

Then again... Murphys Law comes to mind.

One neighbour had his 5yr old start and back the car out
of the driveway into another neighbours car..Gotta love
em ..they want to be just like you..and that can be
dissasterous too! That is the cutest thing when they Try
to drive..The Grandson always tells me "Dats my seat!"
pointing to the steering wheel..It's hard to curb their
enthusiasm..They gow up so fast!!

He will probably run a better time than you at the track seeing that he is a lot lighter.

Scary..you shoulda seen the wife's reaction when she heard the story
and saw her car..getting run over didn't seem so bad!!
Thankfully now they have safety devices that protect us
from ourselves however annoying they seem..

Cute story but also scary. All it takes is a few seconds. I've seen reports on TV where a parent has a very similar situation and the kid kicks the shifter or whatnot and wham!!! The car is in a pole or something worse. Better safe than sorry. Take the keys with you next time.

Now exactly what crossed your mind in those few seconds before you realized the car wasn't moving ?? :D

He often sits in the drivers seat while I work on the car. He has his grandpas creeper to "assist" me for the under car work, like oil changes and that "Lower Grill Mod" I posted.

Sometime it gets alittle precarious. Like when he comes at the car with a big ole 1 1/2 inch Craftsman wrench to "help". But usually he's pretty good and fun to have around.

I think it's noteworthy to mention that CJ is only 4 yrs old too.

Way back when my son was about 4, I was dropping him off at the baby sitters while on the way to work. I was a Lieutenant with our Sheriff's Office and was heading to the office. I stopped the patrol unit in front of the sitter's house and ran around to get him out of the passenger's side. I had left the engine running because it was winter and cold. As I approached the driver's door I heard the door locks clunk. Yep, he had hit the door locks. The car was a year old 85 Dodge Diplomat and the door lock switch sticks up where it's easy to hit. At least, that is what I tell myself and that it was not on purpose. :) As I fumble to get my ever present spare key from my wallet while fumbling through mountains of coat, the overheads came on and the siren began to wail. This went on for maybe a minute, but it seemed like an eternity. The neighbors all started coming out to see what was happening. My son was having a large time. I finally retreived the extra key and unlocked the door and began shutting everything down. Needless to say, I never repeated that mistake again. BTW, I habitually set the parking break on my cars so at least I knew he would not drive down the road before I could get into the unit.

That is funny!! And both stories where really cute..Kids always love buttons
(especially boys) and they move fast!!! They can catch the most vigilant
parent of guard!! Like getting locked out of the house in your bath robe
while trying to retrieve the morning paper!! And a little 5 year old sitting
behind the door snickering!!:D

Update

Bump for an ole thread.

I was out today and had my now 9 year old CJ in the back seat - w/o the baby booster seat! LOL. Windows down, exhaust rumbling, music up and I turn to see this:

Cool pic, Charlie. CJ is getting bigger, one day he will be wrestling you for the keys.

I remember watching CJ run his battery operated "Grave Digger" ride-on car up and down your driveway and the side hill. You're in trouble Charlie when he gets his license. I think his right foot is even heavier than yours. ;)

Here's a pic from 20 May 2007 .... hard to believe that was more than 3 years ago.

Wow! Thanks guys. Indeed, if he follows in my foot steps, I hope he skips a few along the way.

That Grave Digger is long gone now, but he has that look sometimes still... lol

Awesome picture Charlie!

It takes me back to my childhood and much simpler, carefree times...sitting next to my Dad as we drove down the road on a nice, sunny day.

Likely enough Charlie has until he is 18 to get his full drivers license so another 9 years of minimal headaches. lol

Out where Charlie lives, I think the driver's license age is 12 and a marriage license is 14 (with 2 cows or 4 chickens). Maybe vice versa. ;) He may not have all that much time.

Dont leave your kids in the car with the keys, or let them have the keys.
