Today is the third day this week I've driven the Marauder to work, and I'm really enjoying it, especially in this cooler weather. I've never seen a car respond as much as this one does once the temps drop below 60. I usually drive my school truck, but I'm just having too much fun this week.
Since our HS football team is in the playoffs, and tickets are sold at my office, I had two sheriff's deputies in this morning to help with traffic. One of them has always talked to me about, and has even asked me around town if I wanted to race, when he was in his patrol car. When they finished their parking lot duty this morning, I asked him if he wanted to go for a spin in the Marauder. His eyes lit up and he said "Sure!". He was really excited when I tossed him the keys.
He took it easy for a while, and I told him to take it out and get some wind in it. Out on one of our Farm to Market roads, he started opening it up a bit, and told me that last week, on this same stretch, he met a red Trans Am going 71 in a 60. He flashed his lights and said that he was just gonna tell the guy to slow down, but the guy ran. He was never able to catch him. You could tell that he was hoping to spot him again while we were out there.
After a couple of high speed blasts, once up to an indicated 124mph, we eased back into town. Well, we didn't go that easy, and coming back into town, we met Libby, one of Lufkin's finest, and the wife of one of our members here, Smokey. With the car safely back at my office, he stood in front of the car looking at it, listening to it tinkle as it cooled off, and said several times, "Man, that's a sweet ride."
It sure is.
