I had the oil changed today and the local shop handed me a rear tire replacement quote along with my receipt for $360 for two tires same as factory mounted and balanced. Insane or what?

They told me they were about gone but I said there still is some more to paint the road with for now :P They don't look all that bad but I definately will not be clowning around in the rain or anything.

Wait until Tire Rack puts them on sale for $88 each. I bought mine like 9 months before I needed them just because they were on sale.

Unique is a better word, That price is not completely out of line, Tire Rack gets $131 per tire, plus s/h of about $10. So thats about $280, then you still need a mount and balance, which shoudl cost no more than about $15/wheel. Maybe $20 if they have the latest machine with all the bells and whistles...I highly recommend getting a Road force balance

So rounded off you could say I'd be forking out $300 shipped for two tires plus getting them put on.

I guess considering they would warranty these tires there I might just give them the business. I work in retail and know how the internet is slowly closing up local small business.

Ummm...I gotta think out loud about this.

360 bucks buys two fresh OEM tires installed, balanced, ready to meet and greet blacktop. Doesn't sound like a a bad offer...

OTOH, two fresh OEM tires 'net purchased for 80 bucks each, doesn't sound any better. Why?

Think about possible shipping charges, possible sales tax depending on state rules. Then you have to collect the tires delivered to your home and get them to your local install location. Then there's mounting, balancing, and paying the required federal tax and local disposal fees, not to mention your time running around (and waiting) between delivery of the 'net purchased tires, and you getting fresh rubber on the ground. This is a lot of time and manipulation of schedules, and time cost money too.

I have done it both ways. Without a speciality tire, or tire size involved, "one stop shopping" beats "'net buys" every time, just like a stick beats an automatic 9 times out of ten in the 1320. You need to look at the end result, both in money, time and effort spent in getting fresh rubber to the ground on your MM.

IMHO, go back to your source that offered you the 360 buck "out the door" deal, and drive home on fresh rubber today. This is what will keep you, and your family, out of the ditch on a rainy night, and that is priceless, yes?

I agree with you and think I will go with them. As far as the tires I'm using, they really aren't that bad yet. The shop just did the usual deal of always finding something to recommend everytime my car is there. No matter how much I'm spending they will always find something to recommend.

I love the shop and I will be needing the tires soon and appreciate the time spent on preparing me with a quote ahead of time. I will use some extra holiday cash to get them most likely...along with a alarm w/remote start :D

I got tires for the rear about three months ago, 100 each, for the 04 off size which they had to locate... worst thing was the rim (which I was told were almost gone, had to get mine shipped from Jersey) but got one now so not worried for the moment. Have a set to drop on eventually of after market, but like the originals better...

Not trying to hi-jack the thread..but............
......uh.....Mac......this depends on alot of factors--a general statement as such is kinda bold--eh?

Yes...BFG is the only manufacturer that makes the stock rear size. Fronts are a bit more common.

No tax on internet purchases outside your state. Tire Rack's S/H charges are fair, and easily offset the markup on the tire if purchased from a private dealer.

A little biased...? I'm a sucker for tire rack...
