I was leaving work yesterday to run an errand (funny how those crop up on days we drive the Marauder!) and walked out of the buiding with a co-worker who drives a Guards Red 911 Cabriolet.

His car is almost the twin to ours, but his '91 has all-wheel-drive a bit more oomph than our '83. We were talking P-cars a bit and then went our separate ways.

Except, I knew our separate ways would put us on the same heavily patrolled stretch of 4 lane road if I took my time getting out of the parking lot.

So I did.

He drove right past me... his automatic spoiler already extended since he was over 50 mph... it never crossed his mind the guy in Mercury wanted to run his Porsche!

He got caught at a redlight and I was able to stop on his back bumper.

Round 1, he pulled away reasonably and I nailed the Marauder to pull along side of him and let off to match his speed. He was preoccupied on his phone, but I saw the nose on the 911 jump so I floorboarded the Merc again... it grabbed 1st gear at about 30 mph and we ever so gradually walked away from him.

The next light turns yellow and we found ourselves next to each other with nobody in front of us.

I yelled over, "You better hang up the phone!" Evidently the Marauder got his attention, because he already had.

I told him we had to quit by the overpass... probably 1/4 mile ahead, because of a common speedtrap there.

He gunned the 911 and I heard its familiar air-cooled growl get serious.

I playfully brake-raced the Merc and it playfully stepped sideways so I let off.

Light green; mash pedal.

Porsche driver launched gently... a clutch job in one of those can be two grand, so smokin' the disc on an all wheel drive car would only prove financial stupidity, and he's know dummy.

But the Maruader grabbed a quick 1/2 car off the line. The engines are building r's, and I wasn't getting ahead... until he had to shift into 2nd while my 3.55s were just getting going! Lidio's tune was pushin' my 4200 lbs, and the little red barron was starting to fade.

The Merc gave up nothing on the 1-2 shift, and we had about a car and a half at that point. The V8 was pulling hard and the pretty little red car, though scramblin, just couldn't close the gap.

I looked down and saw 83 mph as the overpass was quickly approaching. I touched the brakes and we both slowed... I'm not sure who was laughing harder!

He sent me a great e-mail latter in the day, a real tongue-in-cheek effort that he was just getting ready to catch me as soon as he fired his rocket launchers or something... said he thought the Marauder would go pretty good but never dreamed it would run like that!

With a Porsche at home I'm not real excited about beating one... in many ways they are lots and lots of fun... but it sure look good in the Merc's rearview mirror!

Nobody expects these bigazz cars to move like they do. It's amazing what a personality change a custom tune makes in a Marauder.

I think the sleeper side is one of my very favorite parts.

It's so fun to catch people off guard with a big car that runs real hard!
