View Full Version : Fun Times with the stud!

After getting 3 of 4 snow rims on the car I get to the drivers tire and the lug nut refuses to come off. We get it loose but now the entire stud rotates with it. Shops I went to said they would use the prybar method but they would ruin the aloys. Was there another way to get this damn thing off so I can not look so out of place? Telling people my other 3 rims is in lay away is getting old :help:

Did you try an impact wrench? Might also try tightening it again then try the impact wrench again.

Yep that was also tried. The stud spins freely as if it were on ball bearings. I even tried yanking on the rim it'self. I'm close to saying screw the rim I can run steelies till I get another one if need be. I just don't wanna go to the FLM dealer and get charged more to remove just the stud than it would for me to hacksaw my old rim and buy a brand new one. Should I put the other front 18 Back on and run the honda civic dual rim setup?

This is a tough one, but here's what I would do.
First, remove the four functional nuts. Then protect the visible area of your wheel by covering it with a deep well 13/16 ot 21mm socket. Then, with the vehicle properly secure on jack stands or a lift, Rotate the wheel to place the jamed nut to top dead center, then pull the tire towards you from the bottom. Pull hard, sharp and fast, and be ready to catch yourself and the wheel when it snaps. Damage to the wheel should be minor, and on the backside, the socket should protect the visible wheel, and provide some leverage. Check the other studs, it may be best advice to replace them all. Good luck!

^^^what Mac said^^^ He knows all about being studly! :D
This can happen when using an impact wrench that is set way too high to install the lugs...the stud was probably stripped out on installation at some point. In future, never use an impact wrench without a torque stick :nono: ...better yet, no impact at all...use a torque wrench to tighten the lugs to 95 ft/lbs MAX.

Done by hand but the lock was pepboys cause I felt the 1 set of mcgaruds weren't enough. The car sat in a San Antonio hotel parkinglot that had breakins after breakins to the point I had 2 sets and a 2 way paging alarm. I tried the pulling but it was ded bottom instead of top. I had 2 jackstands under the car in the same spot just in case. I will try that in a few minutes again and hope for the better. pepboys and autozone ran out of the studs. Every other shop said they would charge $15 each. If I replaced them would it be similar to my other cars where the hub rotated to an area where the stud could be inserted in the back and then use an impact and a lugnut with spacer to seat them right?

WAIT!
I just thought of something possibly important here.
Is the reluctant lug nut an OEM/Marauder lug nut? (fingers crossed here)
If so, it's a two piece lugnut that will seperate from the core after some torque is applied. If you can get the facade off, it's a smaller, but solid nut inside, 14mm I believe.
I'm really hoping this is the problem, that just the facade has twisted free.

Nope after the dealership overtorqued them all causing them to seperate later and quoted me $10 a piece I grabbed the pepboy equivilents. The one that is stuck is the wheel lock.

If you can tighten it, torque it till it snaps. The broken end should come out easily, but you'll have to pull the hub.

Something else to try...
With the car on stands, get behind the wheel and rotate the stubborn lug nut to around the 5 - 7 oclock position. There is an access area that you will be able to see the back (head) of the post.
Armed with a hammer and very large punch, try re-seating the post all the way in the hole and hope it will bite hard enough to loosen the lug nut.
That's what the dealershipo did to mine to eventually get it free.
Good Luck!
Mike.

Thats what I just asked! Dude thanx I'll wait till tomorrow when the DIY shop is open. I have to go past it in the morning. Hopefully someone will stock the stud. If not I'll park it and drive the 6 after removal. Don't know what it is but I'm actually liking the steelies look...

I tend to agree with RF. Sounds like the lugnut is stripped. Good luck with the repair. Keep us posted.

sears sell the Tq bar? Gonna try pepboys in alexandria for the studs and bar. I beleve the base itself is stripped. There are no visable signs of shavings on or near the nut. It's still getting replaced. I'll try and attempt the hammer/punch idea and then the 12 o' clock yank.

This maybe a stretch but try freon or some other environmentally safe equivalent and freeze the stud/bolt off. Just trying to help.

First, let the guys know that if they damage your wheel they're buying it. Make sure somebody notices the Glock you have tucked in under your jacket in the back. Then suggest an armor piercing round from a .308 might knock the stud on through to the back.
I bet they'll find a way to get it off.

lol don't think I'l go that far ;) PPK does fit in the 330 sunglasses bin tho... I'l let you know what happens after I attempt it. 1st have to go to my doctors apt next door to the diy shop. Got oil might even knock that out too. Keep ya updated. If I punk out I'll at least buy the parts. At least I don't have to worry about getting car jacked if I do go too that pepboys in the hood cause I have the cop car rims!

Kinda sounds like a new hub will be on the parts list, hope the azzclown who did this is on deck for helping out with the repair bill. If you are going to invest in a set of replacement lugs all around, I suggest the solid one-piece hard steel nuts from Gorilla. Good luck!

Ford dealership has it now. Few shops attemped removal but said due the fact the rim will be damaged they will not go any firther than that. The reseating it from behind idea didn't work. Left the stud and functional lug nut(non locking type) with the dealer. after I get it back I'll install the final steel rim cause dealership charges $30 for that. Is Gorilla the tuner ones? I already replaced the lugs all around minus 4 cause I had the mcGuard locks. Never again will I use those wheel locks! Anyone here have chrome 18 for sale?
<---Expencive lesson learned
P.S. 2 days later the ABS and Brake light finnaly came on.

Anyone here have chrome 18 for sale? P.S. 2 days later the ABS and Brake light finnaly came on. You can watch e-bay for single wheels, but they are usually beat up.
Option two, since you have the snows on anyway, is the have the wheel refinished?

I have used this company, and I have visited their factory to watch how they fix rims. They have a flat fee no matter what gets done, I've sent them a few wheels I bought from e-bay. There are dozens of places, do a google search for one near you, but I urge you to visit the place first. I'm only suggesting this company, because I've tested them.
Option 3 is a new wheel, and you can buy brand new Marauder wheels from Ford Racing, for 399 each.

Happy motoring.
PS. Yeah, sometimes it takes a while for the ABS to trip, because it counts revolutions, and if the tires are close in size but not within the limits, the revolution will eventually add up.

Thanx for the links. I have steelies and don't mind the cop car look.
*dealership just called and said $385 including labor w/o damaging the rim. something about welding the stud to hub route

It's off and snow tire is now on. Thanx for those who contributed. $320 was final total and rim has minor scratches around lug.
