Hey dudes, I'm new to the board been reading for about 6 months and this is my first post.
I need to know if there is any alternative suspension that can be used on the 03 MM. My ride control compressor went out and I want to get rid of the whole system w/o sacrificing the ride?
Help me please.
P.S. Would anyone happen to have a ride control compressor for sale?
Help one low MM.

Welcome! The only "Alternative" I can think of it SHM's spring kit...It is basically an air-bag delete idea.

The compressor should be the same type compressor used on Crown Vic with HPP packages.
Any particular reason why you want to get rid of a system that from all accounts is better then standard springs?
I know may people with over 100k miles on the air suspension system without a problem.
Get cop springs for the back and your done. But do your homework first and base your reasons on facts....and don't listen to Metroplex.

IMHO.... Try a new compressor from "Ray the Dealer". With the install time and parts costs to replace the original suspension, it may be cheaper to get a new compressor.

Big Boy Toy - Welcome to the MM site.:D
You are the first one I have heard of having problems with the air compressor.
Dennis Reinhart - gave you some good info.

You can maintain ride if the springs you select are the same rate as the bags for the most part. You will lose the constant rear ride height the bags provide. So, if you drive by yourself, you can set it up to ride the same. If you add some cargo and/or passengers, the ass will start to drag instead of being returned to the original height with the bags.

I put Moog cargo coils on my buddies GM. Don't know if they fit the MM, but they were under $100 and the rear doesn't sag too much under load and they ride pretty good(progresively wound). I've also put them on a '95 Town Car which is very rear heavy and they did fine on it as well. I like them much better than the police springs on my CVPI.

a compressor just sold on ebay for $10 last week. from what i know the air suspension just levels the rear end when there is weight added(like fat people in the back seat). i turned it off once when changing tires and forgot to put it back on and couldn't tell the diff.

I have a 95 Mark 8 and every suspension part has been replaced in the last 2 years. Best I can figuar, mileage isn't an issue with air ride, its age, Fronts go first on M8 because they are so much more complex. Rears were last to go, but much cheaper and easier to do. Air ride is so easy to work on with the exception of getting the air compressor in and out. No spring compressors, just let the air out. Moisture and age are the enemy of Air bags. If the compressor went, in the older M8, that's a sign of an air bag leak or I heard its also a sign you live in Florida. To test for an air bag leak, my L-M mechanic buddy told me to turn the air ride off, open the trunk and sit on the edge of the car with your feet firmly planted on the ground and your calfs tight against the car. After about 20 seconds you can feel the car drop slowly with your weigh pushing the car down and the car sliding on the backs of your legs. Arnott industries it the undisputed leader in air ride parts for Mark 8's and they do just about anything with factory air ride. They manufacture their own stuff. They now make all the bags for their competitors for the M8 so I used which ever one of their competitors was the cheapest. I was curious what the air ride did on the Marauders since its only on the back. Just compensate for load and smoother? The M8 lower the whole car an inch at highway speed, and lowers when you open the door (called crouch postion- easier to get in and out) and auto levels/compensates for the load.

Well, problem has been solved. Compressor was shot. If you ever hear it making noise prepare for it to go out!

What kind of noise were you experiencing? Both my MMs make compressor noise when in operation, so I'm interested in knowing what is considered 'bad' noise. FWIW, my MM#2 is only slightly noisier during compressor operation, so I am interested in what you have to report on this.

Steve,
When my MM ws new, the air compressor was louder than the engine, and vibrated the floor board when running.
My L/M Dealer removed the compressor and placed a piece of rubber under it and bolted back down.
I can barely hear it now. The sound was similar to an air pump from an aqauarium running without a hose connected to it but 50 times louder.
Mike.

Yep, both my cars do this. However, MM#2 is a little more noticeable, as if each 'stroke' was a little more pronounced.
