Any one else noticed that the underside of the trunk looks like primer. I swear the underside of my trunk lid looks unpainted. It looks just like the black primer. I did notice that it had the tag with the VIN on it. I thought maybe F/L/M has trying to put less paint yet on their autos.

Nope not less paint, less clear coat. It has something to do with a,b,c and d panels as well as being seen. I asked about it at work one day, forgot the answer. I'll check into it tomorrow with an answer for ya.

IMO there is no clearcoat on the inside of the trunklid. Another way for FMC to save a $.:(

In a related question: back in 2003 I asked what could this marking possibly represent? It corresponds to the date of my 1st MM's assembly.

I'm assuming "pick up 2/13/03" but I've yet to see this marking on any other Marauder. The car had under 30 km on it when I bought it, so it was shipped to the dealer in the normal fashion. Any ideas?

Maybe "Paul Underhill" did that on 2/13/03

I'm at a loss for that. Generally we(assembly) are not allowed to mark on vehicles. Now the Teamsters that handle the vehicles in the yards might of, though I'm not sure.

I was just looking at the inside of my trunklid this weekend, calculating if it would be worth the time and effort to take it off and respray it.
My 04 is silver birch, has a pathetic paint job around the rear window.
I'm afraid that long term it will rust, even in sunny Florida.
Was a little concerned about realignment of the trunklid when I put it back on, but hey, I should be able to do it at LEAST as well as Mercury did it!

Welp got an answer and it is what I described and Steve alluded to. A "non-visible" area so no need to clear coat, helps save money.

I would like to get the blue primer paint that is used under the trunk lid.

I have a blue car.

My dealer couldn't help me.

Any answers?

It actually isn't primer, it's the actual paint minus the clear coat.

Time to pick up a trunk lid liner..... they are awesome, most likely an equal amount of $$$ to having it painted

Thank you very much for the help.
