View Full Version : What could cause 'bang' in front suspension?
Greetings,
I have noticed recently that if I go over a speed bump any faster than a crawl speed that the front right suspension makes a terrible BANG noice as the car comes down off the bump.
There is no noise as the suspension is compressed but as it extends (wheel moves away from the body), the noise occurs.
I assume it's related to the strut assembly but I don't know.
What should I be checking? Any suggestions are appreciated.
THANKS!

You have no struts... just a common control arm and shock absorber front with a newly designed aluminum crossmember and rack and pinion steering.. The bang may be due to a bushing in the sway bar or control arm..or a broken shock...

bad shock or broken/loose swaybar link..

The front shocks are a coil-over design, which is quasi-strut like in it's nature. Here's a peek at the parts, from the QA-1 upgrade site.

If you're hearing a bang as the shock/spring compresses, that suggests a broken shock. Just a guess, mind you.
The bang is when the shock decompresses (extends). It is quiet as the suspension is compressed but bangs hard when the wheel moves back down...
I had to adjust the tie rods to get the steering wheel straight after an alignment and didn't notice any end link problems...
The car does not bounce or handle strangely so I doubt there is a visible shock problem.
Oh yea, I am out of warranty. :(

For my second guess, I'll take front anti-sway bar for 200.
If you have a bad bushing, or, end link, it wouldn't show in normal use. But when the front raises up and takes some pressure off of the bar, it may snapping back into place.
Another piece of info - the noise is the same wether I go over the bump with both front wheels or just the right one. I've had a while to test it out as I drive through the parking lot at work...
Any suggestions on how to check the end link? I noticed that it does not look like any end link I am familiar with (bolt w/ bushings and washers at each end...).
I did notice that the sway bar bushings on the frame looked fine...
The noise is most definitely coming from the front right corner.
THANKS!

:type: Hmmmmm, could be worst,I suggest you check the front body mounts, that happen to my first CV when I install a few ENS parts in front suspension.
ATT.STRYKER.
Where are the body mounts on the CV/GM/MM?
...it actually kind of sounds like that could be the cause... based on the characteristics of the noise... it's like if you had something large in the bed of a truck and went over a big bump... as the load 'gets air' and then bangs back down against the bed... THAT'S WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE!
just looking for the answer regarding the shock absorbers thing. just wondering the effect of it if used the styro made? is that reliable that the aluminum?

from curiousity you can find the answer.

If the guy posted a new thread about this, you would all be pointing at the search button.

You're gonna get burned either way, so take your pick:
Axt the question again, or
Resurrect the ancient thread.
I thought it was funny. I don't usually look at the date of the posts, and then I saw a reply from SeargentMac. That made me look at the dates.
