As some of you have seen from another thread, Lidio was in Houston recently. Jerry was kind enough to let me know that Lidio was coming, because I wanted to have him tune my car.
I went to the shop where Lidio was putting some finishing touches on a dyno tune for Jerry's Trilogy equipped car. Both the car and Lidio's work were awesome! After Lidio finished with Jerry's car, he hooked up his equipment to my car and took it for a drive. The first thing he said was," Listen to that spark knock!"
Now I knew that I was hearing a little noise from the engine, but I really didn't know what to think of it. Lidio drove the car at different speeds, all the while playing with his computer, adjusting the timing, etc. In spite of all of his efforts, he never could get rid of the knock. He warned me that it sounds bad enough that it could cause some serious problems.
The first thing Lidio (and others) asked is what kind of gas I am using. I told him that I always use some name brand 93 octane. He said that it could be a bad tank of gas, but I told him that I have heard the same noises for a couple of months, so I doubted that it was any recent gas.
This week, I took the car into the dealer for an oil change, and told them to check the knock. They ran a check and found no codes, and that the fuel pressure was 40 lbs. The service manager drove the car and said that he didn't hear any knock. Go figure.
I took the car to a respected garage here in town, and the tech drove it with me and said that he could hear the knock, especially at certain points, such as right before the 1-2 shift. He suggested a thorough injector cleaning and new fuel filter. I told them to do it, which they did. No change. Knock still there.
The tech said that he didn't think the knock was bad enough to cause any problem, but Lidio seemed very concerened about it.
I have a new MAF, so that's not the problem.
I still have great power and mileage, and the car seems to run fine except for the noise.
What could be causing the knock, and how bad does this have to be before it becomes a threat to the engine?
BTW, even after Lidio spent a lot of time working with my car, he didn't want to take a penny from me since he couldn't resolve the problem. He is a truly stand up guy!
