View Full Version : Fuel System Upgrade

Working on the next step of my fuel system upgrade...

Up to now, I've got the twin Cobra pumps, larger (old style) fuel filter, straight fuel filter fittings, and just got the BAP installed. Had the BAP installed between the inertia switch and the FPDM based on advice from KB tech support. Also ran a new 10 AWG wire from the fuse block to a relay to power up the BAP for minimal voltage drop.

Now I'm working on fuel rails. Ordered Marauder specific rails from CPR (they're the only source I found with the fuel pressure sensor on the passenger side) but found that one of them (pasenger side) pushed the injectors out too far. They claim it can't be a design flaw since they've sold many sets, so I went to a machine shop and had the tabs machined down 1/8", which leaves them about 1/8" thick. Should be thick enough. Then I had the anodizing stripped off and replaced with ceramic coating thermal barrier.

Next step was to find appropriate fuel line and fittings. The y-block came from Jeg's, the fittings from Russell and the hose from Aeromotive. Some of the parts are still on order. Everything is -8 AN (JIC) fittings in the bright stainless-appearing finish they call Endura. Ordered 2-90's, 1-straight, 1-120, and one F-F coupler to go along with the fittings that came with the rails and the y-block with integral fittings that I had already purchased. Only fitting left to round up is one for connecting the fuel pressure sensor for the Autometer gauge. Also ordered 3' of the Aeromotive braided stainless sheath on teflon hose. This assembly will connect to the OEM fuel fitting on the fuel line.

The FPDM goes out for upgrade next week so it can drive bigger fuel pumps if I need them in the future. Also going to upgrade the wiring from the FPDM to the pumps for less drop in the wires. Latest info on the 'stang forums is the upgraded FPDM/BAP can't drive twin Focus or Aviator pumps but it is adequate for twin Ford GT pumps, which are claimed to have more capacity than the twin Cobra pumps. I'll be ready for them IF they become necessary.

This should be adequate for over 700 rwhp. If I have to continue to upgrade, the next section will be to replace the fuel line from the fuel filter to the y-block with 1/2" hard stainless tubing. Of course, I'll leave the OEM hose installed just in case I have to convert to a return-style system but I'd like to avoid that. Yes, this still leaves a short section of smaller tubing in place, from the pumps/tank to the fuel filter, but we'll see how this works before committing to more upgrades.

Gonna get the braided hose and fittings so I can test fit everything on my spare engine before putting it on my car, pics will be posted then (prolly just after Christmas).

Brian, you are goint to need special fittings for the front of the fuel rails. You need an XRP 989008 fitting. This is the ONLY fitting that will clear the crossover pipe on both the drivers and passenger side. If you are running the inlet line to the back of the passenger side rail, you will be ok without these. Its a neater install running to the front.
I had the same issue with the rails not fitting properly, but I left it alone and the injectors in fact sit on an angle, but the o-rings seal just fine.
Get those fittings from raceplumbing.com.

Thanks for the tip, but I'm going in from the back on both of them from the y-block.

We used 2 passenger side rails from CPR for Marty's...but, then again we built a returning system.

Brian, how are you hooking up the -8 line to the pump assembly?
Everyone told me to take the pump assembly out and weld a -8 fitting to the hard line coming out of the pumps.
Well, I did not go this route. I simplt cut the line right behind the 'lip' the factory connector snaps onto. I have a smooth line to work with now.
I then ordered a -6 crush collar fitting that fits perfectly onto the line. A -6 to -8 adapter on that and I was done. Everything modified with the pump assembly still bolted to the tank.
3000 miles later and no leaks. It is much simpler this way.

Saving that part for later. Gonna use the OEM lines from the pump to the fuel rail connector for now.

Excellent topic and discussion, gentlemen. Thank you all.

Bravo, Brian!

This is just another option ... but expensive.

Nice, and that's what I'm planning to use if I have to upgrade the lines. Connect the fitting you posted links to with the tank and -8 an line to a filter then a short section of -8 an line from the filter to stainless rigid line then the rigid line up to the engine and a short section of -8 an line to the y-block.

Like most of my mods I'll take it a little step at a time. Helps me spread the expenses out.

Had I known that existed, I would have gone that route.
However, eliminating the lip in the stock pickup line will increase flow, but not by much.

Hey sorry to bring up a dead thred but I could really use some pics of different fuel rail setup installs....
i have mt motor dry fit in the car and working on completing the fuel rail setup...

I have the CRP and Aeromotive "Marauder" fuel rails...
I also have the Aeromotive fuel pressure sensor rail piece... (it is seperate)

I have a couple ideas how Id like to install it..
The CPR cause the injectors to get an angle so im gonna use the Aeromotive rails... hence the seperate fuel senor rail...

Can someone please post some pics of proper installs... Im using -8an SS flex fuel lines all the way through upgraded filter back to the dual GT pumps....

Thanks...
Ill post up pics after im complete...

Most of my system is really unique, but the section from the y-block to fuel rails may be useful. I'm not able to put up any pics right now though.
