I am going in.
The mod of the day is Ford GT Cam Covers as pictured below:
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/2/6/4/4/FordGTcamCovers.jpg
I will review the threads on the subject again. Then it's off to the garage where The Defyant Marauder has been waiting since last night when I parked it up on the ramps.
I'll try to get some pics along the way to help document the experiance.
The before pics:

UPDATE:
I am progressing along rather nicely. I got the passenger cam cover off. I see the nub that was detailed in the other thread. The new cover is prepped for "nub removal".
Some pics for ya:
The nub on the old cover. You can clearly see the mark left behind:

Passenger head ARTIFACT!:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/Defyant/ARTIFACT.jpg
Not really and "artifact" but almost! One of the spark plug gaskets came off and hid under the cam shaft!!
Ok, I'm goin back. I got the Led Zep on and a cold beer. So far, so good.
EDIT:
I indicated the wrong nub above. I left the thread intact to avoid any confusion. These pics should explain it better. I wish I took a pic of the modded cam cover!!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/Defyant/wrongnub.jpg
In my research, it was suggested to remove the NONstructural material from the inside of the cover. The pic above shows an integral part of the cover. Had I dremeled that "nub", I'd be buying a new cover!
I am pointing to the area showing the material I removed from the new covers. I still had difficulty getting the covers in and endded up lifting the engine little bit, thats detailed in a future post.

Charlie, It looks great so far. thanks for the pics. Any hints you can share would be appreciated as my Cam Covers arrived about an hour ago. I received great service from Roland as I expect you did, also. It looks as tho you will be ready for the GT coil covers when they arrive tomorrow. I noted that you didn't jump to the bait when it was suggested they would look good with the cam covers.:D I probably shouldn't say anything but I can't wait to see if and how you paint them. I HESITATED to let them go but I owe you for your help with my other mods and I want to see how you will dress them up. I really want the engraved ones I have on order down here. I will send you a pic when I get them in a couple of weeks or so. Go man, go. Dennis:beer:

All is going well.
The passenger side cover is on. I am reassembling the vacuum lines and getting alittle detailing done since I am in here. The EGR is painted with a hi temp black paint. That rust look was really buggin me anyway.
JD, I elected to leave well enough alone. The "if it aint broke, dont fix it" approach. If I get the clackety sound from the engine, I'll pullem off and do it again.
A couple of pics:
The orignal coil covers are on for now until Dennis (Hotrauader) GT covers arrive. Thanks again man!!!

Ya'll prolly noticed I am not breaking any land speed records doing this. And that is exactly the way I want it ;)
Ok, I'm going back. Metallica on now and a fresh beer on hand.

No misshaps yet! The drivers side cover pratically fell of compared to the passenger. Enough :blah:.

This shot shows slag. Ever wonder how little bits of metal get in your engine? Look closely to the inside of the timing chain cover near the front and top. SLAG! Left over bits of metal from the casting process. Thanks Ford.

:banana2: Finally Finished! :banana2:
The Defyant Marauder is all buttoned up and running well. I did not run it long since the newly painted parts were still tacky and the silicone has not fully set up yet. Just long enough to make sure it runs and idles good.
I also installed the new JLT intake I won at MVIII.
This took up alot of time, but it was worth it:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/Defyant/DCP_1669.jpg
The job completed:

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/Defyant/DCP_1672.jpg
Agian, the coil covers are temporary until the Ford GT covers come in.
Besides being time consuming, the job really was not bad. I got fed up with the cam cover on the passenger side, so I removed the motor mount bolt from the passenger side and jacked the engine up. I left the drivers side motor mount alone. The engine tilted to the right about one inch. That was all it took.
I'll post new pics with the GT coil covers when ther come in.

Great job, Charlie, your MM is becoming quite the work of art.
Where did you find these covers? i have been looking for them for ever Ford Racing catalogue, they come painted, or, ceramic coated.

Prolly shouldn't call them GT valve covers, because they fit all 4V applications except the GT. Guess it doesn't really matter either.

It took a couple of hours. I maked off around the flags and sprayed the black paint. After a couple of coats, I reoved the tape and painted the "TRILOGY MOTORSPORTS" and the Trilogy logo with a brush. By the time I was done, the flag was dry and I added the white checkers.
I have to edit the post above where I indicated the "nub removal" that was the wrong nub. I did not make the mistake on the new covers, just in the pic I was pointing to the wrong nub.

Thanks again for the high praise guys.
Honorable mentions include King Fubar, BADMK8 and Hotrauder. King Fubar hooked me up with the covers and another thread detailing the removal done by BADMK8, and Hotrauder hooked me up with the Ford GT coil covers.
This was one of the PM's to me from King Fubar that was very helpful in getting this job done:
I used this post:
Some input on the valve covers, as todd said I've been lucky enough to do 2 sets of powercoated covers. first let mesay the second set is no better than the first , but i did get them both in about 3 hours . first romove the entire wiper cowl and motor it really isnt hard then youll have lots more room to , the drivers side isthe easy one just remove the throttle body you do need to also remove the 2 master cyl nuts and swing it out of the way. the pass side i moved the coolant tube from the rear that runs along the bottom of the valve cover dont need to disconnect any coolant lines . disconnect fuel line from rail and remove the 2 10mm bolts holding the sheild over the egr valve . then you should be able to wiggle it out . for the reinstall first , downa couple of michelob ultras you earned them. then i foundthe reinstall on the pass side was made easy by grinding down the small ear inside the valve cover at the rear. if you try to reinstall it youll see what i mean its non structural and it will make life better. there was no need this way to lift the car or mess with the crossmember. 2 sets of powercoated valve covers and no scratchs. my last word of advise is DONT TAKE THEM OFF , EVER .
which came form this thread:
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=8032&highligh t=removing+valve+covers (http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=8032&highlight=removing+valve+cover s)
It took me about 11 hrs, of course i stopped a few time to scream and cuss and throw tools all over the place. Basically because I wasn't dropping a motor to replace valve covers....I'm stubborn like that.
You'll need a 90* elbow for the breather tube that comes off the JLT and into the left cover I picked up a short one from Autozone and you'll have to drill and tap for the PCV on the pass. side I just drilled the holes and carefully used the screw to tap it. The fuel line needs to be removed from the fuel rail, you can buy the tool or do what it did and cut a side from a Pepsi or Coke bottle and make a sleeve around the line and pop the spring in there (you'll get a little leakage but it's cool) and be careful not to kink the metal line when you bend it out of the way.
The only pain in the ass I had on the driver side was the dipstick and that metal bracket on the firewall...then i took the cowling off and all was good. The dipstick you cna just bend out of the way but again be careful you don't kink anything.
I think thats it!

WOW...that is such a simple yet amazing mod. (OK not that simple, but still amazing.) I'm going to do that - what paint did you use?
I am a "modeler" (no not ME...), I am getting back into building car models. It's great work to do at the table after work stiting in front of the TV.
Anyway, I have plenty of enamel model paints, would they suffice or would the heat burn them overtime?
Just curious what type of paint you used.
Very, very nice touch.

We shall see how long this lasts. I used some modle paint I had from my modle building days. If it comes off, I get new paint and do it "right", if I did it wrong.
I guess this is a bit of an experiment too.

Kudos to Defyant and King Fubar on the directions and pics of the Cam/Valve Cover replacement project! The professional wrench at my Ford Dealer had high praise for both. He said," problem with the right side, why did they say left engine mount. Thought it was a mistake, but you know what. Loosened the left mount and the left side dropped down and the right cover slide right out past the evap." When I left he was in another discovery process covered by King F. The "little elbow." This Laboratory is awesome. Thanks. Dennis:D
