Lets talk about TQC's.

I noticed most everyone has 3000 or 3500 stall settings.

Were these stall settings set for your car NA or PA?

Say you put a 3000 stall on an NA marauder and you SC it. What is your stall setting now? You just increased HP/TQ by 50%, surely this will affect the stall speed?

I guess it is great to be up in the power band when you launch, but how many of you actuallly launch at 3000 or 3500 rpm?

Can anyone here with a PA launch at 3000 or 3500 and get any decent traction? I realize a brakestand launch would be OOTQ, but can you punch it at the last lite and still get traction?

I am looking ahead to my PA and want to be able to get a decent launch. I will likely be using 315's on the rear.

Nice line of questiosn Jay.

I have a PI stallion 3K stall TC, built for a PA car, specifically supercharged.

If I understood the guy at PI correctly a TC setup for 3K under NA will actually have a lower stall when more power is applied, such as is the case when you Supercharge. But dont quote me on that, since my head starts spinning when I try to understand automatic transmissions and TCs.

As far as launching, well without the 315 DR, forget it. You need to walk it out, ask Smokie or Tallboy, or Defyant (he is the king of street tire launches). As far as WITH DR and the 3K, I've launched as hard as 2300rpm, and with the proper track prep it hooked and sent me down with a 12.4 run(60' = 1.71)... my normal/average run is 12.65 (60' = 1.9~) in current trim.

Track prep is a huge factor (gi-normous). Moroso, don't bother launching over 2K you'll spin the tires. Last time out there I was cutting flat 2.0 at the 60', and still turning 12.6, but I felt the tires spinning through 60'.

Bradenton is much better, try getting in on a private track day...you'll see your best times since the prep will be perfect, a real VHT wonderland.

Well thats my .02 worth, more liek.05 worth :)

Thanks for the info Mark! That's the kind of the insight I was looking for.

If I can get by with a lower stall converter I would like to. It won't help me to have a high stall that just melts the tires.

Unless I want to ... well, ..melt the tires. :D

My PI Stallion is a 3000 stall, put in a year before I decided to supercharge. At the time the 3000 stall was pretty much what everyone else was going with and providing pretty good feedback, so I that's what I went with also. Not much talk about stall vs. flash speed and NA vs SC applications back then.

IMO, the stall speed, tires, gear ratio, brakes, suspension mods, quality of burnout at the water box, pedal control at the tree, and how much throttle you give it during the launch, as well as how much power your putting down through what stall torque converter all factor into how quick and reliable your 60 foot times will be. There's probably other factors that I can't think of right now that also impact "hooking and booking" at the track.

Reduction in a 60 footer time seems to pay off in multiples in reduction of 1/4 mile ET. More boost can do it, but I'd wager a lot of us are leaving a bunch of time on the table right at the starting line with the pulleys we already have. I know I'm far from having mastered it yet.

All that being said, my best 1.82 sec 60 footer was done with toasty drag radials, 2000 rpm of brake torque and WOT after the 2nd yellow. Daily drivability on a higher stall torque converter will have a lot to do with the tune... and I'm happy with mine.

I have a 3500 and I'm as happy as can be with it. IMHO it's one of the biggest boosts for the bucks for off the line exceleration. Even with my SC the 3500 is fine and I do a ton of city driving.
