Hey gang;
Had a minor technical difficulty today.
As I tried to retorque my lugnuts to 95 ft/lb. I blew a nut (luckily not mine :o).

Here is the bit that fractured off.

A search revealed that hammering on a 13/16" 12 point should bite into the left over bit.
Any and all other suggestions welcome.

Did you strip the threads? strip the outside hex of the nut or break the stud/nut off?

This was the "locking" nut of the spline drive set. I broke the nut itself:(.
Here are better pictures.

They make "Female" easy outs for stud and nut/bolt removal.
If one will get in there it will get it...I'm just not to sure it will be small enough to go inside the recess in your wheel??:confused:
Is that a locking nut that broke?? If so...I'm surprised it broke??:argue:
Good Luck!!:beer:

The pics just showed up.
WOW You'll need to hammer an IMPACT style socket over it to work correctly without killing the socket you use. This is how I'd get them off when I worked at a tire shop. This is also why I never use locking nuts. If someone wants your wheels they'll get the locking nuts off just as fast as normal ones. I've seen several break like yours did too. If you have any issues doing it yourself go to a tire place. They'll know how to get it off without screwing up the wheel.

Just curious. What brand of wheel locks are they?
If you can, find a set of nut extractors. They are like an inverted easy-out but are made to be used with an impact. You may be able to find them at a parts store. The tool companies have them for sure. They are used for removing rounded-off nuts. If you need examples, PM me.
Good Luck,

I had my wheel lock key break, had to hammer a 12-point socket on the lock to get it off, forunately it was on the last wheel. All those "Maguard" type locks & keys went into the trash. I got a set of Gorilla locks, 20 of 'em. The entire lugnut is the lock and the key is an impact-type socket. I did purchase a replacement key for $8.50 I think. That key stays in the tool box. Yes if someone really wanted my wheels they could get the lugs off but now they have to take 20 off instead of 4....... you do the math.....:D

:nono: Please don't use the phrases "nut extractor" :eek: or "removing rounded off nuts":eek: ever again. Makes me walk funny all day.

Hey Kats and Kittens;
Just figured I would post on the successful removal of my broken locking lug nut.

After removing the other 4 lugnuts and replacing with genuine FOMOCO lugnuts. Torquing to 95 lb-ft. I was ready to proceed. Since these were spline drive (ie small diameter) the standard locking lug nut sockets were too large :( I proceeded to hammer on a 15 mm impact socket into place and one quick pull of the trigger and the nut was spinning off the stud:banana:

Here is the offending unit.

All other lugnuts were replaced with FOMOCO lugnuts and retighten to 85 lb-ft.

As you can tell from the before and after pictures, I even had time to give her a bath!
I am glad this project went smoothly and had a successful outcome!
