View Full Version : WTF Is This Letter All About?

I received a letter yesterday in the snail mail from the State of Kentucky (Dept. of Revenue) asking for detailed information regarding the purchase of my MM.

They request my assistance, then add that "Failure to respond to the Kentucky department of revenue’s request for this information may result in a notice of tax assessment."

I have 30 days to respond to the following questions:

1. What was the purchase price?
2. Was this purchase made by cash, check or trade? (Provide documentation)
3. Was there a vehicle traded in?
If yes list the following: Year, Make, Model and VIN.
4. Was there a loan?
If yes, what is the amount?
5. Purchased from a relative?
If yes, relationship?
6. Gift from a relative?
If yes, relationship?
7. What was the odo. Reading at time of purchase?
8. Condition of the vehicle at time of purchase. Average, wrecked, rebuilt, etc.

This bugged me enough that I contacted my L/M Dealer to try and find out what this was all about. After talking with the owner, I have been asked to bring this document to them for further investigation. Jim told me he has never heard of this before and suggested I not fill it out until him, the salesman, title clerk and I have a sit down.

Understanding that State laws vary, has anyone here seen anything like this before? There is a lot of info. being asked of me, and would appear that a call to the State Capital is in short order.
Thanks,

Mike.

The car was purchased in the same county I live in. The vehicle came from a L/M Dealer in Cincinatti (sp?) Ohio to my L/M Dealer.

This was a new vehicle purchase as was my '01 GM LSE that I traded.

Sounds like someone at the dealership dropped the ball on filing for your tags.

[SIZE=2]I received a letter yesterday in the snail mail from the State of Kentucky (Dept. of Revenue) asking for detailed information regarding the purchase of my MM.
I am not familiar with the State of Kentucky; but this sounds like a personal property tax to me. This is over-and-above state income tax, real estate tax, state sales tax, etc.

In Virginia, each county assesses a "car tax" based on the purchase price of the vehicle. It is adjusted every year based on NADA Blue Book retail values. All I have to do is tell them the VIN and date of purchase and the county assesses a rate of $3.60 per hundred dollars of value. Virginia picks up 70% of that bill and I end up paying 30% until the tax is phased out using boosts in the state income tax. I am still paying the same amount .... just into different pots. I have 30 days from purchase to notify the county and tell them. If the vehicle replaced another one .... they need to know that too so that they can adjust from one to the other and prorate accordingly.

You gotta ask yourself two questions ....
1. Does Kentucky and its counties have a personal property tax.
2. Have you been paying it ...
3. Do you feel lucky .... well do you??

Oops, that's three questions.......

Or paying the taxes.
I meant the dealer may not have paid taxes to the state on your behalf.

The state taxes were paid when I purchased the vehicle.

Upon license renewal (tags) the following year, the taxes were paid, as with every license plate/sticker renewal. No pay taxes, no get license.

As far as paying these taxes, my job has been done and on time.

This applies to my '01 GM also.

Yes, the Communist-wealth of Virginny. Personal property tax on vehicles is rediculous, makes you think twice about buying a new car here. All most as rediculous as the 'view tax' I was reading about in some states where they assess your property taxes based on how nice the view is from your front door. :censor:

I was married in Kentucky. I remember filling out the marrage license, they actually ask you if you are related to the person you intend to marry! I $h!t you not!

back to the topic: I had a truck licensed in KY, they charged me a 'tire tax' maybe they've come up with a new scam,.. 'er ,.. uh, I mean tax.

Sounds to me like perhaps the dealership you got your car from might be under investigation....

Don't let the dealership have the original document. Give them a photocopy.

They are verifying information that your dealer passed on to them when it was sold to you. I see no harm in answering the information, after you have made a call to check it out with the Dept of Revenue.

Or an audit. You know how we all think automobile dealers/salesmen are sleazy bastages? Well, some of 'em are, and the state departments of revenue use methods such as this to keep them honest. It has nothing to do with you, Mike, because the tax was extracted from you when you made the deal, and you paid, up front; but the dealer may have reported something different. That he wants to see you before you fill anything out, and claims he's never heard of such a thing would suggest he's being targeted, and could be trying to get you to falsify the report.

Don't do it, because you could become an accessory to a crime, and be prosecuted. :banned:

I've gotten these from Penn DOT, and just filled 'em in and sent 'em.

I remember when I was in the Navy in Norfolk and this Peoples Republic of Virginia tax law. Swore Id never live there again. I think they still have a law on the books where they can even come in your house and tax you on your funiture and all that too but they dont do it. Re: Kentucky, sounds like the same thing.

I took the paperwork to the Dealer this morning. Found out that this is a regular, random audit performed by the state to ensure there is no money laundering occurring.

The title expert said she has seen this before, and to not worry.

Thanks to everyone that responded  :) :bows:

I agree, your dealership is probably being investigated. I would call whatever agency sent you the letter and ask them what is going on. Your dealership's reaction was very interesting. They closed a dealership down in CT last year for tax and loan shennanigans so this sounds like its similar.

Better them than me :D . The title expert at the Dealership did not seem surprised once she read the documents. I have a copy of the bill of sale, and am mailing it up. Should be cut and dry on my end. New car purchase thru "A" Plan, financed by Ford Credit.

My trade was also purchased new and financed the same way. It was paid off when I traded in for the MM.

Thanks,

Mike.

A dealership was closed here in NY to the tune of over $8M owed in unpaid NYS Taxes on the sale of vehicles!!!
The IRS and NYS both seized the dealership and arrested the owner.

Seems like this guy was guilty of this 10 years ago and they let him go then.
I don't think they are letting him go anywhere now.

I sold a van to a guy in Ohio, im in Michigan. A year or so after the transaction I got a letter from the Ohio DMV asking a bunch of similar questions about the transaction. I considered blowing it off but it bothered me so i looked the guy up (the buyer), called him, and we made sure all the info i provided was what he provided..If you know what i mean..
