View Full Version : EBC Brakes

Here is a alternative brake kit for the Marauder made by a company in CA named EBC brakes, These sport rotors use a special unique disc alloy are zinc anodized for protection and are dimpled with wide aperture groves.
This wider slot actually draws cool air across the pad surface keeping the pads and rotors cooler.
The pads are of a very special refined ceramic design with used in performance applications.
IE. In use in racing applications and govt. persuit autos.
They are indeed superior in every way!
They have excellent performance either hot or cold and produce far less dust.
Have a pad hardness of hard and excellent fade resistance.
Because of the above they will allow rotors to last much longer yet have a high friction rating.
A special surface coating adds a unique brake-in quality for instant efficiency.
This is a highly formidable step up from OEM brakes.

EBC brakes have a very good reputation in the motorcycle industry. I'd say it's a good option for anybody who hasn't upgraded and wants to stay with OEM size rotors.

How can I not like them? I don't even know anything about them besides what the salesman said. An upgrade should be a step up and that's what I'm interested in finding out - is this a step in the right direction. I am curious as to the black paint on them, after use is there a black border of paint around the rotor and the steel contact area? If so, why painted?

Owning a bone stock Marauder with 71K miles on it now, I know I'm going to need replacement brakes someday.
I'd rather go this route than off-the-shelf NAPA stuff.
Thank you, Dennis. This is a nice option for the bone-stock owner. Please keep us posted on the group buy opportunity?

you should do a group buy that also includes the braided cables.
I could do this if we get enough interest, and the rotors are not painted black there Zink Coated the problem with the OEM and OEM after market replacement is the stock rotors are prone to fade and heat cracks these are brand new, dimpled not cross drilled along with gas slots and they are being tested by several Police agencies, I will keep you posted. All I was trying to to do is give other options the KVR kit is a great kit but it is also a lot more expensive.

Hey Dennis,
I was surprised to see the price you posted. I did not expect it to be so high. I have to admit, It looks and sounds like a nice option to larger diameter rotors, makes up the material in thickness???
If the rotor is thicker (if it is) does that result in thinner pads? the calipers will only go so wide, right?
Nice setup!

Alright, they are plated. But does that stuff rub off? First, it's prolly not as dark to the naked eye as these pics appear, but yes, the swept area will prolly be shinny. Since they are stock sizes, I guess you could look at your stock rotors and determine what's not going to be affected by contact with the pads.
A few weeks back, I had a classified ad here looking for second hand brake parts because I had just priced out NAPA replacements at about 620 bucks. But, this looks tempting to me, even at MSRP, the "less brake dust" closing the deal. I'd rather go with these EBC parts than NAPA.
BTW, I'm still looking for calipers, guys, front and rear.

Check the brakes in my sig - have 25+K miles on them and they still stop better than stock. They also cost less than $600. I prefer the carbon/metalic over the ceramic pads but that's just me.
The package that Dennis is offering has better rotors and since it's almost time to replace what I have now, I will be watching this for a group buy!

The rotors are black anodized so the wear area is just the
pad contact area. Thus --- the hat, groves and dimples
will be dark.
It will be a super look and have good stopping power.
This mfg. has good success with motorcycles and race cars.
A big plus in my book. These are it for me. :burnout:

I'm in, Dennis, thanks! I'll call Debbie in the morning with my order.
The black anodizing is very sweet. The pads will polish the swept area, and leave the dimples and gas slots black anodized for accent, along with the hats. Very tempting for adding some visual effects in the re-assembly.
I'm thinking a black-chrome-red thingy with the calipers and hardware. Should look real sweet on my silver birch #3.

I have set all this up, and we only have two confirmed sales, we have to have a total of ten. Then EBC and KVR will make ten sets for us, at that time we have to pay for these kits, so please give Debbie a call and place your order. Or this will just stall the whole process.

Installed mine yerterday and..........
I am still bedding them in.
They Look Superb!! - I'm already getting
people asking questions and taking close looks.
These will have much, much better stopping power.
The pads are very, very unique ( have no ferrous metal
and they remove some heat by design,
instead of just adding ) as well as the rotors.
Will work well hot or cold! Good value!
The old rotors took awhile to get off because
they were rusted in place. I put antiseize on the
new ones so that won't happen again.
Took 1.5 hrs. to put on.

I won't disagree with "bigger is better", larger rotors with calipers to match do indeed increases the "swept area" of the brakes and improves stopping power. But, I have to add that when modding, every mod has it's benefits and it's drawbacks. Big brake kits are one such mod, I know because I have the Baer kit on my #1x.
I like this EBS kit because it maximizes OEM Marauder braking power while staying within stock specs, therefore, no problems with wheel fitment, balance weights, and so on. My Baer kit just barely fits inside the OEM wheel, and I have knocked off wheel weights while driving in regions where replacements were not available. I have also had problems fitting aftermarket wheels over the Baer kit.
BTW, anyone with a donut/mini spare tire, is out of luck too. Can't use it if you have a flat on the front with the Baer kit in place. While the Baer kit is 1300 bucks, add on another 400 bucks for a full size spare.
All of this is resolved with the EBS product because you retain the stock calipers (two pot/piston in front, single pot/piston in the rear) and use the OEM hardware to mount them. The pads have an excellent reputation too, and the stainless steel braided lines are an improvement over the stock rubber lines. This kit is the best you could ask for, without disrupting the OEM brake system, or, having to mess with other drawbacks like hunting down a full size spare.
At 700 bucks, the cost of the EBS kit is half that of the Baer kit, and without the hassle.
With regards to durability and longevity, I have no doubts about the EBS kit, but as soon as I get my kit installed on my #3 Marauder, I'll let you know.

I look forward to reading your review Mac. And thanks for the heads up reminder on the spare. I read that somewhere here during the research into the Bear kit and totally forgot that!

SergntMac
02-15-2006, 10:05 AM
Thanks, Charlie. I don't mean to sound down on the Baer kit, I love mine. Just pointing out some hidden complications with the mod.
BTW, I have tested the value of stainless steel braided brake lines alone, as an independent mod. For what it's worth, and they earn my recommendation. Early last year, ToddTCE made up a few sets for us and I installed a full set on Slowpoke's Marauder. The performance change was remarkable, I suggest this mod to anyone serious about driving. Nonetheless, here they are included in this kit, and this yet another plus in it's favor.

02-15-2006, 10:23 AM
There are pros and cons to every single mod we do to our cars. Ususally the pros far out weight the cons. So we continue to mod.
When I had the MM out on the closed runway, I neglected to measure the stopping distance with the new brakes. I will say this though, with the Baer brakes, the car almost stands up on the front bumper!!
I installed KVR SS lines also when I did the brakes.
I would have liked to try just adding SS lines to the stock system just to see the difference.

I am curious as to the black paint on them, after use is there a black border of paint around the rotor and the steel contact area? If so, why painted?
The black paint you see is a protectant (I believe), and when you brake with them the first time, the black comes off. I don't believe they'll leave a border. However, what's nice about the paint is it stays on the hub - so it stays black and you never get that pitted half-rusted greyed-out look on the hub.

Dennis the brakes will be there Monday the lines should follow.
they are coming direct to you from KVR. I would call today if it were not Saturady, all the kits were sent out in the order they were phoned in on, and as some of you know I could not place a order with EBC till I had a confirmed ten sets. Some of this delay could not have been any other way, and I have sold the late comers two sets at the sale price, again we do the best we can, just give us a call on Monday. Now the late comers kit will be next week. That completes the group buy I will stock these after this, thanks for every ones help in putting this together.

This is the one drawback to any group buy, whether you're buying or arranging the sale. Things move at the pace of the last customer needed to meet the minimum order. Just look at my GB on Z&M control arms, still haven't met the magic number of a ten set minimum, and early (and eager) customers are frustrated and feeling out alternatives.
Can't say I blame them, but this is the single negative element of a GB. The discount is attractive, but the gratification is not immediate.

Shortly after logging off from my post this morning I received a call from DR who gave me tracking numbers for my brakes for Monday Delivery. Advised that if the lines are not here be Wed. to call him for follow-up. Thanks for the update Dennis. I appreciate to care. I was probably the last or one of the very last on board as I really dont need brakes at this point but the count appeared stuck at 9 at the time and I will need them as some point as I am going down for the last time with this car toy no matter how many others I may buy for everyday use. I was misled by the DR post, 2 weeks ago or so that said half shipped this week and the rest on Friday. That was a couple of Fridays ago. DR ships stuff to me often and it always is overnight....so....Thought I was left off the list. Sorry...I know....call ...call...Peace. Dennis:)

OK, I'm still waiting for my lines, but it's time for a story to ease the tension. A couple weeks ago I was getting anxious about my brakes, waiting for delivery, reading everyone's complaints on this thread, etc. I didn't want to sound like a whiner and post, so I decided to call:
"Reinhart Performance, this is Jackie."
" Hi Jackie, this is Bob Williams from Gahanna, Ohio."
" Bob, I've been looking for you."
" You have? What's up?"
" Is ther a Jonestown near where you live?"
" Johnstown?"
" Yea, that's it. Seems we sent your brakes to the wrong Bob."
" WHAT?!!!"
Turns out there's a Bob Williams about 15 miles up the road from me, he's a customer of DR's already in their computer, and he owns a Marauder! I called him, yes he had my brakes so I went to see him and pick them up. He's got a beautiful black '03 300A, DR tune, kooks headers, and his own custom 3" exhaust. I've been trying to get him to come to lunch this weekend with the other Buckeye Marauders but he's super busy. He owns his own business. He machines aluminum heads for small block Chevy's!
I'll keep at it, maybe I can get him out with us sometime this year yet.

Dennis, I am interested in the brakes/rotor special, not the lines, do you still have them? I also emailed you last week, I'm sure you're busy, but let me know I'll put the order in ASAP. Let me know.

The complete kit incldes front and rear rotors and pads the MSRP cost is 674.00 PS
but we can do a group buy if we can get ten or more orders.

I have been very critical of DR, unfairly so; based on how responsive he has been for all of us. I have always received my items from him almost before I can hang up the phone. Dennis:
What is the current status (pricing/availability) of the EBC brake kits? Also what is the status of the (pricing/availability) SS lines? Have you resourced SS lines from another supplier yet, or are you still marketing KVR's SS lines? Thanks. Real sorry I missed out on the original EBC group buy a few months ago!
Thanks again!

Got the EBC Brakes, front and rear, from Dennis Reinhart. Got 'em Friday, installed them on Saturday.
Very straightforward installation. They felt great on the test drive.
I'm still in the "bedding in" period. I'll post a report when they're all broken in.
For whatever reason, one of my OEM pads wore all the way down at around 29,000 miles! Maybe it was the hot laps around Waterford Hills?

This is normally due to the caliper sticking or a bad caliper

The calipers seem okay; definitely not sticking. How would I tell a bad one?
It was not just the one brake pad, either. There was a lot of wear on all of the pads, particularly the fronts. But the RF got all the way down to where it damaged the rotor.

I'm through the break-in period with the EBC pads and rotors and am very pleased! Thanks, Dennis (and Jackie). Here is a picture of how they look after 300 miles:

I know I'll take some ribbing for the color I painted on the calipers. I swear, the can said "purple" not "magenta." The MCM guys are going to be whistling the Barney theme song whenever I show up! :o

Nice! The purple is not what I would pick, but better than OEM. How tough is it to paint the calipers? Is there a special paint that needs to be used? What's the prep like?

The caliper paint I used was called G-2, and I got it from The Tire Rack (http://www.tirerack.com/brakes/g2/caliper_paint.jsp). They have several colors to choose from.
The prep was pretty easy. I put the car up on 4 jack stands, and took all the wheels off. Then, I used brake cleaner and a wire brush to clean up the calipers. In the instruction book, they suggest you mask areas that you don't want to get paint on, but I just used the included brush without masking.
There was enough paint for 4 coats on the calipers. It took me 15 or 20 minutes to get around the car per coat, so after going around once, the first caliper I painted was ready for the next coat.

Dennis, I have the EBC brakes from your group buy which included the black w/red coating. Has anyone tried the Red Stuff Ceramic Pads or the Yellow Stuff racing/street pads? I would be interested in whichever would give me better braking performance on the street and at the track. Thanks Dennis

Here is a alternative brake kit for the Marauder made by a company in CA named EBC brakes, These sport rotors use a special unique disk alloy are zinc anodized for protection and are dimpled with wide aperture groves.
This wider slot actually draws cool air across the pad surface keeping the pads and rotors cooler.
The pads are of a very special refined ceramic design with used in performance applications.
IE. In use in racing applications and govt. pursuit autos.
This is a highly formidable step up from OEM brakes.

http://web.iwebcenters.com/reinhartautomotive/images/session/00-00-1138118410-frontrotor.jpg
The complete kit includes front and rear rotors and pads the MSRP cost is 674.00 PS
but we can do a group buy if we can get ten or more orders.
I want clear up some misinformation that was brought to my attention, when I did this group buy last year, a customer called me today about the yellow pads sold in these kits, the customer was led to believe these were a cheaper less performing pad, these pads were yellow.
I was very concerned so I called EBC today I spoke to Joseph at EBC he assured me these pads are the same high quality police pads, only now they are black, These are the same pads used by the the FHP here in Florida. The Yellow pads that were included in the first GB were painted yellow and are of the same quality as what the FHP is using. So now you know EBC is now painting these black, with the RED break in coating, I even asked Joseph if there was a better pad and he told me Dennis this is one of our best pads sold, if any one has any questions please feel free to call me any time, or Joseph at EBC 818-362-5534

The following is a quote direct from the EBC Brakes Website: this should settle any and all misinformation.
"EBC Brakes latest generation Yellow stuff high performance disc pads have been successfully passed after thorough testing performed on two models of police vehicle at the Bruntingthorpe Air force Base in the UK. Meeting the heavy demands of high speed police chase vehicles, EBC Brakes are one of the first and only companies in the world to have provided products to pass the tests which includes multiple high speed stops, heat sensitivity, and wear analysis testing."

This is Andy the owner of EBC Brakes.
I just want to point out that
EBC Yellowstuff pads are a Kevlar organic pad with ultra high friction and fade resistance. The latest material is marked DM 1846 on the reverse, this material FAR outperforms its predecessor compounds.
Inspite of being know as our YELLOW Grade for the purposes of this police area of business we powdercoat the pads BLACK for this serious application.
We code these pads with a suffix P on the part number to denote this special police pad image and material.
I defy anyone driving one of these to out drive these pads, we have passed every test know with flying colours especially the UK police MET Test on Volvo T5 (heavy) and Ford Focus (admitted lighter) cars and are now supplying more brakes to UK Police chase cars than anyone.
As long as guys look for the DM 1846 material and the P suffix on the pad part number they will be happy.
Please can you post this somewhere on your site
Thanks
With Kind Regards

Well thank you, all I wanted to do was make sure my customers get what they paid for, and have the corect information, if we have the interest I will gladly start another group buy today. We have one kit in stock will need a min of five kits for a GB.

Maybe I misunderstood. I thought your quote "... we have 2 sets of EBC Police package brakes in stock, from our last FHP order so if any one would like these give us a call, for pricing and shipping" meant a full kit. I think I misunderstood! Sorry about that. I'm up for a group buy, though, if we can get it going.

Hey Dennis. I'm already equipped, but what if you offerred some stainless lines with the EBC FHP kit and sold a truly full complete brake upgrade as a group buy? It would be a one-stop full-on brake upgrade. Just a suggestion since I ended up doing mine in so many pieces. I'm sure the package savings would be super compared to the bit-by-bit way I did it! Besides, the buyer would only have to take their wheels off once!
Just a suggestion FWIW...
