View Full Version : Any Interest? - Aftermarket Subwoofers

I am getting ready to start designing a Fiberglass Subwoofer Encloseure that will fit into the Passenger Side Cubbie Hole in the Trunk. In theory, one 12" (or smaller if wanted) subwoofer will be able to fit.

I was wondering if anyone would be interest in one, because after the first is made, others would not be as hard to fabricate.

If you also design one to fit into the drivers side, I'd be interested. One 12" just isn't enough in a car this big.

I have two 12s in a conventional ported box and although they sound great, they take up too much space.

I'd be down with that. I'm thinking about doing a setup where I put the amp where the stock one is, and make a box using a 10" sub. One high quality 10" with some good watts going to it would sound nice. I don't think there is enough air space there for a 12" sub?

Well, what I am shooting for is a Minamum of 1 cubic foot. 1.25 would be better, but "most" 12" subs will work well in 1 cubic foot. Worst case scenario.....Solo Barics! I had 2 Solo Baric 10s in my Sierra in .44 (wanted .66) and they still slammed!

I will probably be starting this this coming weekend (Jan 28, 2006).

I have the factory CD Changer on the driver's side.. so I won't be making one of those.....unless there is a large damand???

Interesting..

More bass - clean bass would be a good thing. Only problem is - the wiring. I have never had stelar success with car audio upgrades.

I have managed in the past and gotten by, but nothing really "otta this world".

If I start tinkering with the audio, it'd have to be right! Or not at all.

I'm happy. 2 10" small enclosure Orion's. I've gone the solo baric route in my old Ranger but they were twice as much as other brand small enclosure subs... and I lived about 5 miles from Stillwater Designs (no special deals for me though). I don't think they're anything special. Their amps are decent though.

I would be intrested seeing as though I have a box and amp just sitting in a closet...the used to be in my Taurus, but the box takes up too much space...I have two Orion 12's...so sounds great...keep me posted...

I'm happy with my one 12" JLw7. Two couldn't hurt, but one 12" of THIS subwoofer is very decent.

I am interested in something that will fit with both a full size spare & trunk organizer. Not much room in there for another "permanent" fixture.

2x 15" will run in 1-1.25 cu ft if loaded isobaric (face to face). That's enough for our trunk.

i may be interestead too. what's the cost going to be?

KillJoy
01-26-2006, 09:11 AM
Not sure on cost yet. Gonna see how long it take, how much and of what is used.

JL Stealth Boxes are about $300 loaded w/ a driver. I think that is WAAAAYYYY to much. I would like to think about $125 +/- for a finished enclosure.

I'll just have to figure a price once it is all said and done for.

i would pay that if it would fit my 12" infinity kappa.

If that sub is anything like their others, it will work just fine in 1 cubic foot.

same here. box takes up too much room. not enough room for beer now. ive been looking for options and was thinking about a bazooka but heard they suck. let me know what developes with this.

Well all, this project is not dead. However, I do not think I will be able to make and sell these for any reasonable amount of money.

So far, I have five layers of heavy mat and have used 3 cans of resin. Each layer is taking about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to smooth out and lay down. This is going to translate to about $50+ in parts and 8+ hours, and I am not even done yet!

I will keep y'all posted.

I will still consider selling them, but I am not sure of a price. I don't think I would pay what I would end up charging. :(

I will see where everything stands once complete (hopefully this weekend), and see if I can do it.

Sorry guys! I have has some family issue going on for a short bit, but they seem to have finally been resolved.

I have made no further progress on the box. I am hoping to continue working on it today. I need to affix the front (MDF) to the rear (fiberglass).

I will take pics as I go (hopefully)!

Send your "beta" sub enclosure box, when tested and proven, to China and have it duplicated by prison labor and State subsidized material. They may even be able to mold it in ABS or some other high quality material. Should be able to get the price down to $30 each. ;) Cerwin Vega or JL subs-that's what I'm talkin' 'bout.

Yes, the hole is for a 12" Sub. And, yes, it is in the cubby hole on the passenger's side of the car.

It's really too crowded on the shelf next to the spare (where the OEM sub is). Your location on the right side of the trunk seems to be the next best location. What kind of mounting depth are you planning? Probably not enough room for a JL W7 but that is probably overkill/over the top for most.

If I had to GUESS, I would say that a 12W7 would not fit. That is a monster sub! I am sure that the box depth could be brought out a but to add more depth (going down into the depression in the bottom of the trunk). An man, 45 POUNDS! That is a hugh driver!
