View Full Version : # 7 cylinder and EGT install ?

I'm actually digging the feasability of installing an EGT gauge on our car.

The mounting of the probe seem to be the challenge. According to some sources, the number 7 cylinder would be the one to watch closely in that scenario (the leanest).

- So where is the number 7 one ?
- With Kooks, it looks like it wouldn't be feasable to weld the fixing nut at
1-2" from the cylinder head with the headers IN PLACE. Am I correct ? ( I wouldn't want to go for a take off and install back on procedure.)
- If so, Autometer offer an alternate way with another probe attachment lower, near the collector. You then monitor one 4 cylinders bank (for a lot easier mounting). Would this alternate install still be an acceptable method ?

Thanks

If all mod engines are the same then it should go like this:

Back of Engine
4-8
3-7
2-6
1-5
P-D
Front of Engine

As far the probe placement I venture to say your call. If getting to #7 collector is a hassle then the Autometer alternative way would be the way to go.

Were your sources basing the #7 statement on Mustang 4Vs or MMs? The #7 cylinder is leanest on Mustang 4Vs. The theory is that the intake is on the passenger side which creates a straight shot directly to the #7 cylinder. Since the MM intake is on the driver side, I wonder whether the #3 cylinder is leanest? Double check the sources and make sure they were discussing MM engines.

Warpath,

It seems it is my mistake. My source was yours truly, on a october tread on Autometer gauges. At that time you did mention about the number 7 on Cobras and i assumed it was the same for our cars, since they are so similar in design. I'm back at square 1 !

Ask Autometer?

It may be harder for MM owners to determine which cylinder is leanest that Mustang owners since Mustang owners push the envelope more. There are more engines tuned too lean and eventually crack a piston or two. One of the tuners may know which cylinder is leanest.
