So tell me guys, what brand name of oil do you like?

I like Mobil 1.
I used Motorcraft syn blend for oil change because I couldn't find Mobil 1 in the viscosity I wanted.

No, you're not seeing things Tom...that is what it says. It was recommended by my Ford Tech (and in a long discussion on this board several months ago) that moving to 30W would be preferred.

Tom, 5W-20 is recommended for CAFE reasons (cough...*********...cough)... it is NOT required for warranty purposes.

5W-20 is almost thin enough to drink. I'm using 5W-30 and no worries.

Wow... I haven't seen anyone using Pennzoil in awhile. Most everyone I know uses Valvoline or Mobil. I always found Pennzoil to be too harsh of a cleaner. After just a few miles the oil looked dirty as sin! But that was awhile back now, so maybe they've reformulated?

Anywho, I use Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 5W30 with the Motorcraft filter (Although that K&N is turning me on for it's little bolt thingy on top of the oil filer. That would make the job on this car ten times easier!).

Mobil 1 5w30 and Motorcraft Filter with 3000 miles interval oil changes. Have 7000 miles and doesn't use a drop.

I use 10W in all my older motors, but the newers ones with OHC heads don't get it. Gotta remember that getting oil up on top of those heads is a bit of a challenge, and the cams (especially two of them) REALLY like the oil up there.

Used to use Valvoline SynPower 10W-30, Valvoline DuraBlend 10W-30 before that... and Pennzoil before I could read!

i'm also going the Mobil1 5/30 winter 10/30 summer route. this from recommendation of the service manager LM dealer. Also it's difficult to find any synthetic 5/20 around here.

got 11k miles and no issues so far.

10W30 does seem to be a bit much. But if your LM service manager agrees.........Good luck with it.

remember, 10W-anything in full synthetic is much less viscous than 10W dino oil. That stuff will have no trouble pumping to the heads. With that in mind, I use mobil1 15W-50 in my Lincoln LS Duratec V6 and Castrol 5W-30 full synthetic in the wife's MM.

If you are really concerned about using 10W-30 vs 5W-30, let your car warm-up a few minutes longer. Looking at the published specs from Mobil, 10/30 has a slightly higher viscosity (hence, higher film strength) than 5/30 at operating temp. At 6000 RPM, I'll take it.

Use Motorcraft 5W-20 Premium Synthetic Blend motor oil & Motorcraft Oil Filter, don't have any reason to use anything else at this point.

I have always changed my own oil for the last 30 years for me, my wife, and two kids. I've used syntheic oil such as Mobil 1, Amsoil, and Castrol. (No Pennzoil please too many bad stories) I think they are all very good motor oils and will do a very good job protecting your engine if you change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.

My last car was a 2000 Lincoln LS V6 (yes it needed more power), it took 7 quarts of oil with the oil cooler and filter change. I changed the oil and filter, (by the wat I really like the Mobil 1 filter, it filters down to 5 microns where most others only filter down to 20 microns), after 5,000 miles but the oil still look new so changed to regular Castrol 5W-30W worked great! I drove the car 50,000 miles and never ever ued a drop!

However, as long as my Ford/LM dealer continues to change my oil and filter for $11.53 including tax which includes Motocraft oil filter and 6 quarts of 5W-20W Premium Synthetic Blend Motocraft motor oil, I'll let them do it. I can't buy the same products for that price anywhere.

11.53 for an oil change, H.S.!, that's a deal you can't beat anywhere. Myself been with Mobil1 for almost 20 years, with no problems and Purolator filters.

Yes merc406, $11.53 w/tax. The Ford/LM Dealers in central IL. must be having a price war on oil changes.

However I had the same dealer change my daughter's oil and filter today for 9.99 w/o/tax and they charged her $16.00 extra to clean the battery posts and clamps.

Pay them now or pay them later!

Can you be more specific? I switched to Pennzoil 3-4 years ago, on the recommendation of my supplier, and have had no trouble...plus, I believe all Jiffy-Lubes use Pennzoil (I think Pennzoil owns Jiffy-Lube) and I've heard nothing bad about them, at least not relating to the actual oil.

Today in the mail came a "Valued Owner" no-charge service offer for a free oil change or tire rotation from your participating Lincoln Mercury dealer. Now thats better then $11.xx :)

That's it Bill, thats my favorite engine oil. Clean oil, every 2K miles. And for what my LM dealer charges under the independents, almost ten bucks under, it's not worth my time to do it myself.

Pennzoil used to have a high parafin content. I've seen some pretty gummy engine internals on engines that routinely used Pennzoil

I use Ford 5W-20. Not a fan of syn. Just my choice.. Got of fleet of Ford van's (17)that travel 1,300,00 miles a year on 5W-20. Have not rebuilt an engine in years. Traded 2 vans in last year with 300,000 miles and no issues..I realize these are 5.4L, not our 4.6L but my crews don's spare the throttle:rolleyes:

What Bigdog says proves the 5W20 oil works.
I read an article a while back thet proved modern 5W20 oil actually has more lubricity than 5W30, and breaks down less.

RF Overload, in the 70's and 80's when Pennzoil was paraffin based oil I had several friends that had to replace their engines because their Pennzoil had turned to sludge and plugged their oil pump screens.

Most of the problems were mainly associated to two things. One, the oil that caused more problems than others was their 10-40W and second, the owners did change their oil until after 4-5,000 miles. Since then I have not been a promoter of any Pennzoil products.

The main thing when it comes to oil is changing it every 3,000 miles. I have had several cars that went over 250,000 miles without major engine repairs. I currently mave a bang around 89 sunbird with 235,000 miles with the orignal engine and transmission. Everything works including the A/C. John:D

That is the key. 3,000 mile oil change. Most of my work vans get an oil change ever week, rotate tires every 6,000. flush radiator ever 45,000. trans service every 30,000. I even change rear gear oil ever 75,000. Fleets preforms very well. PM much cheaper than shop time! Sad part is I know friends that could care less about oil..

I like to chang my oil and filters myself for only one reason. I know what oil is in the crankcase, I know what filter I used and I have in 20 years never stripped an oil plug. well i guess its actually three reasons but whos counting? ; )

HELP!! I am changing my oil right now, and can't get the filter off, has anyone changed thier oil yet, and if so what do you use to get the oil filter off. I tried a conventional oil filter wrench but don't have enough room to get it to clamp onto the filter.

Are you sure you have the correct replacement filter? Take a long screw driver and punch through the filter housing. Now use the screwdriver to turn the filter. Once you break it free, it should spin off by hand.

MitchB - That will work but be careful it gets a little messy. IMHO it seems like the filter installed by the factory is always hard to get off. I think they over tighten them. John

The FL820 motorcraft filter can be removed easly with a plastic cap style socket that fits the filter and uses a socket wrench to remove, that can be purchased at wal-mart for one. :)
