Hey guys, I am looking at a Marauder in Augusta at Bobby Jones Ford. Here's a link: http://www.bobbyjonesford.com/Pre-Owned/preowned.htm
It looks like a great buy, but there is a luggage rack on the trunk (how lame?). If I did buy this car would this be a P.I.T.A. to remedy? Is it drilled into the trunk? Thanks again fellas!

Personally, I would keep looking unless the seller is willing to give up some of his asking price for you to return it to original condition. My guess is if it's a good job, your cost could be about $500. If it is a secondrate job, it might be as much as a $1000 to make it right.
I suspect the seller may not want to reduce his price to satisfy you .... 'cause obviously he liked it and found utility in it. If he won't budge off his asking price .... walk away and find another. :D That's MHO.

I think that most luggage racks are through bolted. That's unfortunate.

Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinkning... Although it would be a shame to let such a nice car go over a luggage rack, lol.

Who in there right mind would put a luggage rack on a car with a trunk as big as ours? Idiot. I'm guessing that thing's screwed on there. Best find a black trunk lid from a used CV for cheap and get it repainted.

Luggage rack? What Marauder needs a luggage rack?
Maybe it's a platform for a huge wing.

A car dealer I was at earlier this week told me they are waiting for someone to trade in their 12000mi Marauder soon. I had a smile that some lucky soul would have a chance to get one. Then they told me it has a rag top and crome trim around wheel wells. I told them nobodys gonna buy it with that junk on it. Stay tuned.....

Wrecked cars tend to get bent in the front.
I bet you'd have little trouble finding a trunk lid in the boneyard... especially in Black.
Find out what its gonna cost... $200-$300?
Don't even bother messing with the one on the car... you'll spend too much to get it right.
If the trunk rack is the only issue with the car I wouldn't let a couple of trunk hinges and swapping the lock cylinder keep me from getting it.

Replacing the trunk lid is the only way to go IMO.

yuck, even for just a grand maquis that would be ugly. keep looking around. for the price they want you could buy that car anywhere without the ugly luggage rack.
i wouldn't even bother with a trunk off another Marauder. unless this car is a steal and i'm talking 17K walk away. There are plenty of other Marauders out there.

I think I see map pockets so it's an '03A with all the goodies, and good paint. The car looks exceptionally clean, and has low miles, for one of the first ones. May have been the owner's baby.:dunno:
Get Roy to run the VIN on Monday.

I have seen this car in person around Dec. it is rough. Hit in the rear torn bumper and somthing was wrong on the front also can't remember exactly. Just bad treated condition all over. Paint, interior and tires were sun baked and cracking. They were closed when I looked at it so I didn't get a price or drive it. My wife said the rack on the trunk made her sick to think someone even would do that to a Marauder.:puke:
I go to Augusta about twice a week if you need more info on that one.

Use this car to practice your negociating skills. Go in and try to buy it for $17000. But don't pay anymore than that. Then you'll be ready when you find the right car.

As I recall, it was the first Marauder to officially beat the might Sable.......

I bet this one came out of the Mercury dealership looking like this new. I was at a local dealership one day getting the oil changed and I was looking around at the new cars, some looking nice like the Milan ect... Then I see a new 06 Grand Marquis, fake convertible vinyl top complete with gold snaps, lots of chrome doodads painted gold, it made me want to puke. No wonder they cant sell any cars.

Now I've seen it all....and I thought the Orange MM was the anomaly...
I had a TownCar with the 4.6L....."balding" landau/half top blue with moonroof on white exterior...blue leather interior...chrome over the 'wells...and luggage rack on the trunk (very much bolted through the lid deck) which through the long and winding road maintained my passion for big, late model F/L/M's....
But the 75 year old I sold it to (who subsequently drove it to FLA with a nice new short block plus my patented attention to detail love and care) looked much better in it than me. . .

I went to Bobby Jones Ford today to check on the Marauder with the rack on the trunk.
It is a real Marauder unmolested except for the trunk lid.
It has been hit in the rear by something with a tall bumper.
The rear bumper cover is very distorted rippled,sunk-in,cracking and lumpy.
Rear tires are new.
Front are dry-rot.
Inside it is a little sun-baked.
Front bumper is scratched and maybe also involved in some sort of collision.
Rack has surface rust.
As seen on the internet, pictures it takes are a lot better than the condition it is truely in.
Asking 21K I would offer 16.5K and see what happens from there..:burnout:

you'll enjoy a nice car much longer than a nice price, so make sure the price is very nice!

21 is out of the question in that condition. 16.5 is too high. They probably got it for 12-14K in trade. Anything over 15K is too much, imo.

I concentrated so hard on that quote I forgot where I was.
If it was all blacked out to match the car it might not look that bad. Maybe it held a wheel chair or something along those lines, who knows. I don't personally like it, and didn't like one on my 'vette so I took it off and tossed it along with all the air conditioning crap that was just extra useless weight.

All of the advise is good, however; have you considered that you would own a very nice car, one of a kind. There is not another MM with a luggage rack in the universe. Try to get a price reduction, if not; that is not that big a deal to remedy in my opinion. Dennis:D

I understand the whole "to each his own" thing. That's what Hondas are for and why we don't drive Hondas.
A luggage rack on MM should be a crime as should the vinyl top:shake: .
Yes, it is only my opinion. However, Give me a break:rolleyes: .
