Hi all,
My alternator quit last week and I ordered a replacement that arrived today. The new one had the clutch pulley on it, and after searching through all my junk (as my 4 year old raced his trike around MEMA asking for tool after tool) I could not find the pulley tool! (Moving twice since I installed the blower didn't help). So I'm SOL till I find it or get another one somehow. It wouldn't be a big deal but my winter ride's motor is on its last leg and I hate driving that cloud former around....
Can I borrow somebody's? I live in Rochester, Mi and work in Sterling Heights. Anybody close by got one? Thanks in advance!
Jeff

Jeff,
Give me a call and I will bring one to you a.s.a.p. I have them in stock and you should be able to take care of it quickly. Or if you are in the Dearborn area, bring your alternator by the office and we can do it in about 10 minutes.

Jerry

Excellent customer service strikes again!
I used an air chisel to get mine off, seriously. I switched to 8 rib so I no longer needed the clutched pulley.

Thanks, thanks and more thanks. Jerry - as always you rock! Everyone else that replied thanks also! I have a rather long post to make about this, that I will put in the garage, but suffice it to say I have more time to work with now. I repaired my old alternator using a part off the new one. Check in the garage soon to get the details. I still need the tool, but hopefully (if my repair holds up) not right away.
You guys are great,
Jeff

This just happened to me. I'm stranded in Bristol VA with a crapped out alternator. I'll try the rev thing tommorrow morning when the battery has had some time to cool down.
What else can I do at this point???

Okay. I just frooze my butt off outside. The rev trip did not work. I did not want to keep the engine running at that speed knowing everything was running at reduced voltage. Held it for 3 seconds at 4500 limiter. Reconnected 3 prong cable and restarted it. Battery light came on in several seconds. Wondering if the shock from the old pulley removal jarrs the diodes inside the alt.
Any suggestions as to how I get out of Bristal on my own power? My removal tool is back at Anderson SC. I'm here in Bristol VA. I've got about 300 miles to get home in DC.
Anyone close with the removal tool?
I'm going to get some sleep.

Where are you at?
I have the tool. It's about an hour from me now - ofcourse I'm not entirely sure *where* it is...may take a while to find... I'm working all day tommorrow and can't get out, but may be taking Friday off. If I can help let me know - how far in VA is Bristol??
Sucks your stuck, I'll lend a hand if I can.

Wait did't you just get your Trilogy kit installed? EDIT: OK, I'm guessing the new alternator came with the stock pullley assembly on it...did you get it from a dealer? Do they have a removal tool??
If so, you don't need the removal tool anymore, the alternator should have a new pulley on it with a standard nut. EDIT: I think I was wrong with this statement!
Did you have the old alternator tested at a local parts shop? It could be possible the extension harness is having issues, were the crimps crimped tight on the big wire? Were the smaller ones soldered? It'd be nice to be able to ohm test the wires if you could, even strip a way a bit of insulation past the last crimp and go from the end to that point and check your ohms to see if it makes a good circuit...
Let us know.
Mike
PS. *phew*...Bristol is pretty far down in VA, about as far away in VA you can get from DC huh... :( Again, keep us updated, we'll see what we can do.

He has the clutch alt and should have had the pulley swapped during the install of the Trilogy. Since he is concerned about the diodes, I think they swapped the pulley.
I do not have the removal tool.
Brandon, call Rick. Anderson SC is less than 4hrs away, they may be able to help you.
What do you mean by "allowing the battery to cool down", is it hot - like over heating?
I got your message earlier today about the guage question (unrelated to this) but I didnt get your phone number. PM it to me or call in the AM.
You are not alone.

Hey Charlie...new day for me. 0630!
Let me see where to start. Alternator was modified for new pulley.
I do not have any tools to check for continuity of the alternator circuit.
Rick doesn't get in till 0900.
Cool down as in let the battery rest for a bit as it was providing all of the ignition power. Sometimes a circuit opns under heat and once cooled again makes contact. By letting it cool down that's what I hoped to see.
I guess Rick is my best bet at this point.

If this keeps up, I'll keep the tool in the glove box when I got my kit.

That actually is a great idea. We shoulkd put that in the installation manual.
Something like "retain alternator removal tool and place inj glovebox" :D
This is frustrating to say the least.

Ok....I am seeing a trend here.
Is the customer support being offered here normal for this particular Vendor, or is it just due to the person in need of help?
If this is normal behavior, OMG, I just made a decision on where to buy from!

Just back from the shop. It was the alternator that went down. 0.037 VDC output. Guess that's not going to charge anything is it?!
Does anyone have a schematic of what the other three control wires do?
I assume there is probably a field wire and maybe a feedback circuit (the other two conductors).
I sitting here bored and MMless when I want to be :burnout:

Glad you're getting it taken care of. :)
Not sure what the other wires do per wire, but tpyically they go to the regulator so it's computer controlled to control the output. Without them you won't get a charge, atleast on some setups.
Again, glad you're getting this taken care of, I'm stuck at work today and sounds like you're a good 5-6 hours from DC.
:)
Looking forward to seeing you're new blower setup, hope to see you at the next CAM meet!!
