Well today my roommate(Aaron) and I were getting the marauder washed and we decided to go test out some cars at a dealership, he is looking to get a truck. Well i pull up to the Used Car part of a dealership because Aaron wanted to see what they had used first. I pull up and all the dealers were just standing outside talking. I get out and one of the dealers starts talking and everything started off well. But then he messed up, he said "So your daddy must trust you alot to use his car"...ok stop...anyone want to guess what i said next?
Ok, i just looked at this guy and said "This is my car!". The dealer had an "Oh cr**" look on his face and one of his coworkers that was sitting down listening to the conversation started laughing and clapping and said "Oh man thats a slap in the face". Test drove a Texas edition f-150...which means they have a chrome bumper lol, think ill stick to the marauder :)(got tons of great responses to the marauder also). Well we went to a Dodge dealer, walked in and looked at the Viper and SRT10 they had sitting on display...we then went to look at the cars, and i wanted to test a charger just for kicks, and my roommate found a truck he really likes. After about 30 min of NOONE even saying a word to us we left. Just because we are young doesnt mean we are poor, it really made me mad.

Some sales people are total idiots. There are SO many car dealers around here (large and small) you can't sneeze without hitting three of them. I just move on to the next one on my list if I am not treated politely.

A saying I live by (when I can) is 'Never judge a book by it's cover...'
That applies to almost any situation in life.
Someone told me a story about Elvis walking into a Caddy dealer when he had just started to get popular. None of the salesmen would help him because he was a young guy in blue jeans, t-shirt, probably cigarrettes in the sleeve, you know the picture.... I heard that when someone finally asked him if they could help him and he said he would buy one of the caddys off the showroom but he wanted the commission to go to an old black man sweeping the floor.
Maybe that is just wives tale or greatly exaggerated. But it sounds like it could be true.
I hate it when a dealer thinks just because of your age, the way you are dressed, etc. that you cant afford something. I have walked into many dealers of different makers and I assume because I was wearing shorts and t-shirt didnt get service. Their loss...!
Same in your case, their loss!!!!

Actually, I'm kind of the opposite...I HATE it when I barely have my other foot in the door and some sales droid steams up and asks if he can help me...damn, dude, I'm not even in the door yet!
I went to a Highland Superstores (anyone remember them?) one day just to look around. As I cruised through the TV department, the nearest sales "ass-ociate" said "So, what kind of TV are you interested in today?" I said I was just looking, thank you. Next came the Hi-Fi department..."So what kind of stereo can I sell you today?" I said I was just looking. Long story short: I wasn't in there for 15 minutes and I was asked at least 4 times what sort of ______ I was looking for. I never went to another Highland again. Or maybe it was a Fretter...doesn't matter, they're both out of business.

True story (except for the cigarretes). It's been documented a few times in different places.

Happens to me all the time Best one was when I went to go look at a Stang GT in 04. Talked to a sale man and said I wanted to test drive it, his response was this is to much of a car for somone your age, I said ok then see you later. Guy chased me down in the parkign lot when he saw me driving away in my Lightning. Told him wasnt intrested and would take my business some where else. Just happened recently too when my fiancee and I went to go test drive and order a new stang GT for her. Went up there in the Marauder, slaes man actually told me to stop lying cause there is no way someone my age could afford to drive a car like that LOL. Needless to say we went somwhere else.

I hate it when a dealer thinks just because of your age, the way you are dressed, etc. that you cant afford something.
Many years ago, I wanted a '74 Plymouth Roadrunner very badly. However, when I went to the local dealer, all the salesmen seemed pre-occupied. I tried for quite a while to get someone's attention; but to no avail. Finally, one of the salesmen came over reluctantly and I told him what I was looking for. He tried to steer me to a Duster or something else. Could be that I was a young Army Lieutenant in uniform. :dunno:
Anyway, I was rather frustrated ... and walked out. There was a Dodge dealer less than a block away. I walked in and saw a '74 Dodge Charger SE sitting on the showroom floor. When a salesman approached and asked if he could be of assistance, I told him to wrap this one up ... and do up the paperwork.
About 45 minutes later, I drove my new Charger back to the Plymouth dealer. I parked in front of the main door and walked inside and found the salesman who had turned me off. I walked him outside and let him know that with just a little effort he could have sold me a car. His loss and his dealers loss .... 'cause they never got a referral from me. :P But I did keep that Charger for about 12 years.
I don't like being rushed or pressured by salesmen either ... but when I find something that I want ... the process should be rather easy !!

20or so years ago(wow has it been that long) my good freind won the genetic lotto and inherited a ton-o-$$$.He knew what he wanted so we jumped into my 85 mustang LX 5.0 and headed over to the Nissan dealer. He wanted a 300zx turbo. We where wearing the uniform of the day in AZ,for us,shorts ,t-shirt,sandels(him) Nikes(me).Thats about it,oh and the 32oz Big Gulp.
We find the car on the lot, check it out then go to find a sales man......
I've never had trouble finding a sales man before......
So we go inside...One of the bottom feeders finaly comes over and ask how he can help...
My freind says he wants that red 300zx outside, but would like to test drive it first.Salesmen kinda smirks and ask how he planned on paying for it,freind says I was planning on writing you a check.Guy goes off,we thought to get the keys, comes back and says his manager needs him to fill out a credit application.Freind asks why,I'm paying cash?Long story short they didn't beleive he had the meens to buy the car.Freind asks for manager, guy comes over and repeats his requist for the credit app.Freind pulls out his check book and says this will cover it do you want to selll me a car....EVER?
Manager wants the app and can't understand why my freind wont fill it out.Needless to say we drove to Tucson that day bought his car in about 45 minutes then went back to the Pheonix Dealer in his new 300zx,looked up the manager and saleman and let them know they lost a very wealthy customer for life, did a burnout in the new car deliverery area on the way out and never looked back.

:P But I did keep that Charger for about 12 years.
Had a 72 Charger SE for 14 years. Talk about bullet proof. If i hadn't wrecked it i wonder how long i would have kept it. Had 160k when insurance company totaled it out.

Just because we are young doesnt mean we are poor, it really made me mad.
Get used to it... It didn't really go away, until you're into your ealy 20's. When I was fresh out of school, and was starting to look at vehicles, I faced it almost every place I went. Couple quick examples:
Went to a Chev dealer, with my mother in tow (we commute home from work together). I was looking at a S10 Xtreme (I know, leave it alone). The sales person came over, and asked my MOTHER, "Is there anything I can help you with, ma'am?" Her response was a quick, "No and he's the one looking for a vehicle, you may want to talk to him!" I left. :mad2:
Went to a Ford dealer with my father. He wanted me to look at an F150 (he said the Xtreme was a little plastic toy, and I didn't know what a Lightning was, yet). It was a weekend, and we were wearing older clothes - jeans, t-shirts - to go to the wreckers (he needed to find a couple parts). I was looking through the window into a F150 Supercab. From behind me I hear, "Do you know what the price on that one is?" My response, "Yes. Yes I do. I also know what you (salesman) were implying." I left. :mad2:
There are hundreds of dealers out there, and they're all selling the same stock. Find one where they treat you properly, up front. If they can do that, what happens when you have a problem?

What fools, I wish I had that effect. Every time I go to my dealer and
need to wait for my car, I usually look around at the new cars. And every
time the same sales man comes running out, "can I help you?" They never
remember me there. Anyway, I hope your friend finds the right truck!

Here Goes............. Grew up a part time dealership rat....... Grand father started one of the older Toyata-Volvo Dealerships on the east coast.
92-93 Sold New Lotus & lamborghini along with used exotics in Atlanta.......
01-04 Sold Volvo's here in the Atlanta area........
Can I tell you how many big swingin D#$(%@ promised me on a stack of bibles that they were gonna buy a car from me?
Beleive me when I tell you if you don't know from doing it for a living, there is just as much bs coming from the buyers side of the table.
For sure there are some very shady sales people no doubt. Saw plenty of it. We had some guys who could sell cheerio's as donut seeds......... I personally tried to make sure everything that came out of my mouth could be backed up with a little investigation, because i did not want to be lumped in with that type of sales person.
Still happened from time to time tho. Cannot tell you how many time s a customer questioned my integrity trying to buckle me so he could get a lower price. Volvo buyers.......... Toughest car to sell in Georgia by far. Fortunatly for me, I was lucky and had some very good customers who purchased more than one vehicle from me. I never sold the most, or made the most, but I could tell anyone that misstreated me, to "get bent" bosses and customers alike, because I knew my product, backed it up, and was never judgemental untill someone else opened that door.
Trust me..... its not easy to sell cars the right way. Could have made much more being slimey :stupid: but my parents raised me the right way:coolman:
If anyone is contemplating a purchase of a vehicle, and I can help, let me know....I still have a few contacts, and can at least offer some strategies that may be of help.
Best regards,
GAMike
Before I ever knew what an MM was and about 6 months before my buy I went to a local dealer asking to see some Crown Vic PI's. The sales guy looked in his inventory and told me to go look at car number XX. When I got to see car XX it was a Grand Marquis.
When I went back in I asked him why he wasted my time by sending me out to look at a totally different car. He said that it was because he didn't have any CVPI's. The other sales rep, who was slouching in the chair across the desk said, "Yeah. Why would you want a PI unless you wanted to imitate a cop?"
I just looked at both of them, shook my head and walked away. Talk about complete morons.
Anyway, I later learned about the MM and bought mine shortly thereafter and life has been great ever since. :)
Best,
Dan

RVT............
Your story reminds me of people who used to come in to the Volvo Dealerships I used to work in, and brag on their Audi's, Merc's BMW's and such.
Oh a Volvo can't do what my Audi S4 can (Twin Turbo V-6 vs. an S 60R)....Don't even know why I'm here...........
I used to hear this so many times in a month, i'd be rich if I had a buck for each time.
These were people I would let drive first............. As we go through the test drive, they would get sick of me tellim em how to finesse the car to get more out of it, and finally I'd make em pull over (if they were serious about buying a performance car, and not just out for kicks), and put the car through its paces at a considerably higher level than they did...........
By the time they got back to the dealer, a good portion of these ppl. were not so high up on there respective marquee's. Even sold a few of em lol.....
I agree 100% though if one of the service advisors or sales ppl. said something like that to a customer, they deserve to get decked!
Regards,
GAMike
