Was on my way back from dinner tonight when the tranny decided to crap out, got on the highway and was running about 65 or so. Went WOT to pass a row of cars and when the car went to make the 2-3 shift all I got was REDLINE:bigcry: . Pulled over and checked to see if there was any fluid leaking and nothing. Car has first and second but no third or fourth. Any idea what crapped out??? What is it gonna cost me to upgrade so it will hold up in the future?? A wonderful way to end a wonderful week:mad2:  :bs: :censor:

Is the MM still in base 3/36 warranty? If so, take it in.

The same problem happened to me with 7000 miles, also overdrive light was flashing.TQ converter was smoked, had complete rebuild under warranty.I have a 03 300a,service tech told me there was a upgrade kit for the transmission. No problems since now have 25000 miles.

My guess is the intermediate shaft (or 'stub' shaft) broke. The parts in our transmissions are 'hardened' from the factory. Some unscroupulous transmission guys claim that in there list of goodies on their trans even when it isnt the 'good' aftermarket hadened parts... But it is not the same as some of the hardened parts out there like some that are cryogenically treated and are made from better metals like 300m.

Ask me how I know!!!!!!

Problem is it probably stayed locked up long enough on the downshift to apply all the load to that shaft. The shaft isnt that big to begin with.

Bad part is everyone is backordered on the real good units. Only one company that I know of has the 300m shafts instock now. But they are not cryo treated. And another company has a 26 spline (instead of 24) and slightly larger diameter shaft (and different drum to accept the 26 splines) available for upgrade. But they are backordered for 2 weeks also.
PM sent with more details.

The "stub" shaft-yep-thats what happen to mine as well--same exact situation as you described-except mine was at a much higher speed-but the same end results---------My guess is what ^^^^^he says here^^^^..Tom

............65 or so. Went WOT to pass a row of cars and when the car went to make the 2-3 shift all I got was REDLINE

Would having pushed the O/D button before going WOT have prevented this?

There's been several posts, with very good explanations, I think from both Dennis & Lideo about this issue.

FWIW, I have read several times from several sources that the 4-2 downshift is really hard on our trannys although I don't recall which specific part it's hard on.. So, the answer might be 'yes' drop OD for 4-3 downshift, then punch it for 3-2.

Yep.... Thats is the ticket. That will help alot. You also have to know when lockup is happening. Not such a big deal on a NA car but add a turbo like mine or any other supercharger/nitrous and it makes the problem much more apparent....

Lidio puts his lockup at low 60's (62 I think he said) mph and Dennis puts his at 45 or 42. I cant remember which he said. So depending your speed, you may be locked up even on the 3-2 down shift. And if you go to pass someone and lockup is set to come off at WOT but you dont quite his WOT (90% throttle etc..) then you are still locked up.

The part it is hard on is this intermediate shaft. The thing looks like a bolt. But instead of threads on the skinny end it has straight splines. And on the larger end it also has splines instead of the bolt head. It is about as big around as a penny roll maybe on the skinny part and a quarter roll on the larger end.

Sometimes these shafts shear clean like mine or sometimes they splinter. It may have something to do with the material they are made of or I dont know what else. But if they splinter they take out lots of other crap. Including sun gears and other things. If you are lucky like mine, it sheared off clean and you will have to get a competent rebuild. And go for the aftermarket hardened shaft. It is supposed to help alot.

What is a hardened stub shaft worth? I got one with my Art Carr/DR tranny kit and destroyed the tranny anyway. The stub shaft is in excellent condition but when I rebuilt this time I went with the 26 spline hardened shaft from LenTech.

Thanks for the replies guys, the car is way out fo the factory warranty. I have around 64K on it now. Todd seems like what you said could be the ticket. I am not to worried about parts on back order cause the car isnt my daily its just a toy. So its going to go back into storage today and stay there till I get the time to fix the tranny.I was gonna have to do the tranny down the road anyway when I added the blower so I guess I have an excuse to spend the money now lol.

Have you tried going into 4th again? I remember test driving an 04 and while on the highway my dad was driving and it would not shift up into 4th it just kept on reving. He backed off and nothing it still wouldnt shift I think we resolved it by putting it in neutral then back into drive and it shifted. Looking in the glove box we found stuck in the service records a diagram of the tranny so I think it may have had previous work done.

If it's not just the factory hardened part then they go for between $145 and $175. But that is for one with better metal and cryo treatment as well ($175).....

I had the DR kit in my first tranny. After pulling it apart it is only the factory hardened shaft. Which is a standard from the factory with later model 4R70W's and up... I dont know what year the cutoff is.... So that would be an upgrade for an early model (again, dont know years) but not for ours....... But it would be a good way for someone to get back on the road from a broke tranny and save money...

The Lentech is what I want to go with. But they are still 2 weeks out on the shafts. But he has the drums now.. Which of course you have to buy both...
