View Full Version : Oil lines leaking on remote filter

After 3 months of troouble free performance I noticed the oil lines leaking on the remote filter on the engine block side. The kit was from Perma Cool and used barbed ends and a worm gear clamp. This arrangement was no match for the oil pump unfortunatly. The hoses have been replaced with #8 SS braided line and compression style fittings. Now my total investment is equal to one of the high performance remote kits but without the better adapter and filter block. I guess what I'm trying to say is don't skimp if you are planning this mod.

I had an oil cooler hose blow off when I was down in Florida.
With the help of Mac and RF Overlord, we were able to push the car into a K-Mart and repair it there. I lost about 2 quarts of oil in 5 seconds. Thanks god I was looking at the gauges at the time. Stupid me has not upgraded to the # 8 lines yet, I just tightened the ***** out of the clamps.

Expect to spend about $100 to upgrade to the SS lines. Plus the fittings are larger and require a little thought to make everything work.

I just run a cooler and a sandwich adapter, theres plenty of room.

I wanted SS lines and compression fitting all along. I pieced a kit together from Summit and it was about 300.00 I'm sorry about your misadventure and this further keeps me on that fence......

BigCars4Ever,
I have 2 remote oil filter kits ready to go in the spring. Both kits have the barbed hose ends without clamps. FWIW, I am told by knowledgeable people in the hydraulic hose business NOT to use band clamps with the barbed end hoses. Just attach using the teflon tape on the threads and you are good to go. Sorry for your 2 quart loss.

GordonB, what will hold the hoses on the barbed end if you don't use clamps? Did I miss something?

According to the people in the KNOW as well as some members here, don't need no hose clamps -- just use as shipped from the manufacturer/supplier. I bought my 2 from Summit Racing.

I think y'all are talking about two different kinds of hoses here.

There are some oil cooler/remote filter adapters that are sold with barbed fittings, and generic oil-resistant
high-pressure rubber hose. These need clamps. The system that GordonB bought uses a different style of
hose, and a different style of barbed fittings, called "PushOn". These don't need clamps. PushOn fittings can
be easily identified by the (usually yellow) plastic washer. They also have fewer barbs, spaced farther apart.

If you use worm clamps with the PushOn hose and fittings, they will leak.
If you use worm clamps with the generic hose and barbed fittings, they will eventually leak...

^^^^^EXACTLY RIGHT^^^^^^

Generic hose and fittings require clamps but the hose is damaged as you tighten the clamps and mash it onto the barbed fittings. It is likely to leak sooner or later.

BTW: "Push-On" fittings usually only have two barbs on the fitting (as well as the yellow washer previously mentioned), and using clamps on a Push-On fitting will cause a leak*.
Push-On hose is normally identified on the hose's exterior cover as a Push-On hose.
*Push-On hose and fittings work like a 'Chinese finger trap'...the higher the pressure, the harder the hose grabs the fitting.
Push-On hose and fittings are engineered to work together as a system. It works great.

P.S. I'm using -08 (1/2") Aeroquip fittings & hose on my remote system.

Finally getting tired of seepage from the low-end lines and barb fittings that came with the remote oil filter kit, and starting to plan the upgrade to proper hose and fittings. Have a couple of questions:
1) are push on "socketless" hoses and fittings better than AN fittings? the opposite? or same same?
2) does it matter if I use -8 or -10 fittings and hose?

This picture goes back a few years, but AN fittings should be used on any high pressure lines. I used them on the fuel system from cell to carb, trans cooler lines right to the TCI cooler, all but the radiator hoses.

O.k., but does it matter if I use -8 or -10 fittings and hose? I seem to find -10 more cheaply available.

Are the stock hoses 1/2"? If they are then -8 are probably correct. I think I just brought my old fittings to American Racing and matched them up.
